How to find your Thermostat Model Number?

To find the correct manual for your Honeywell Thermostat, it's best to find the specific model number of your device. Generally speaking, the model number is either printed on the back of the face plate (which can be removed by either unscrewing or gently pulling / grasping) or is available through the interface.

Honeywell Thermostat Instructions

Honeywell has been operating for over 100 years and in that time has produced many hundreds if not thousands of thermostat models. This makes finding the correct user guide or owner manual tricky as you may inadvertently pick up the wrong one.

It’s important to correctly identify your thermostat model by finding the model number and then cross-checking that against the manual you find online. In many cases, Honeywell produces a product series that can include a number of variations of the same thermostat. Choosing the incorrect manual may mean you have the wrong Honeywell thermostat instructions for wiring or configuring your device.

In addition, Honeywell produces thermostats for various different markets. The manuals listed in this resource are primarily from the US and UK market however these are also sold internationally into Canada and the EU, and further afield.

Types of Honeywell Thermostat Manuals

There are a variety of manual types available online that may be useful to you.

User Manual / Owner’s Guide

These are the most common type of manual available and contain instructions on how to program and use your thermostat for heating or cooling. Sometimes these manuals also include installation and wiring instructions where there is not a separate booklet for reference. 

Installation Instructions 

A lot of Honeywell thermostats require professional installation by a registered electrical contractor. A number of models contain detailed instructions for installation which contain wiring diagrams along with different variations of installation.

Quick Start Guides

As manuals can run to tens or hundreds of pages, a number of models come with quick-start guides which are visual documents providing users with the high levels features of the device. Great for those who don’t have the time to wade into the full technical detail of the device.

Product Specification

Some products also come with spec sheets that highlight the specific technical specifications of the thermostat. This can be useful if you need to understand the granular details of the device installed however is generally not that useful for the end user.

Types of Honeywell Thermostats

Honeywell has produced a multitude of thermostat types over the last 50 years. These devices can generally be grouped into the following categories.

  • Time Switch – Simple device that provides the ability to turn on/off or boost your heating. Some models provide the ability to program 1 Day or 7 Days
  • Non-Programmable Thermostats / Temperature Controller – Ability to specify a specific temperature along with the ability to turn on/off or boost. Some models support cooling as well as heating where you have the ability to control your fan. 
  • Programmable Thermostats (5-2 Day / 7 Day) – Models that provide the ability to granularly set the temperature for different days via the button and screen.
  • Digital Thermostats – Thermostats that incorporate an LCD screen to provide information on the settings selected.
  • Touchscreen Thermostats – Thermostat programmers with a touchscreen interface as opposed to buttons built into the cover plate.
  • Wired Thermostats – Traditional non-programmable and programmable thermostats must be wired directly to the heating or cooling source. These devices may still have a battery backup.
  • Wireless Thermostats – Modern-day thermostats are wireless and can be installed anywhere in the home, as long as there is connectivity to the hub. This makes installation a lot easier.
  • Smart Thermostats – Cutting-edge thermostats that are integrated with cloud services for smart home automation and voice control via Alexa.
  • Line Voltage Thermostats – A type of thermostat that is specifically designed to handle electric heat sources such as baseboard heaters, underfloor heaters, or mains voltage room thermostats.
  • Heat Only or Cool Only Thermostats – Some thermostats will only be connected directly to a heating or cooling system.
  • Humidification, Dehumidification, or Ventilation Thermostats
  • Zonal Thermostats – A home HVAC system typically consists of multiple zones whereby there is a central programmer connected to the heating and cooling sources, with individual room thermostats feeding back temperature data.
  • Room Thermostat – A simple room thermostat that allows the setting of temperature for that room which is connected to the main system to control heating and cooling.

Troubleshooting a faulty Honeywell thermostat

It’s difficult to provide troubleshooting advice for a Honeywell thermostat without knowing the specific model number. Each model has its own quirks, so I recommend you review the user manual for the specific model above to help resolve your problem. 

The types of troubleshooting queries that are answered in user manuals include …

  • Display is blank
  • Screen is difficult to read
  • Heating or cooling system not responding despite the thermostat being on
  • “Cool On” or “Heat On” is flashing
  • Temperature settings not changing
  • Temperature changes occurring at the wrong time
  • Error Codes or Error Symbols showing on display
  • Flashing Icons on display indicating a fault
  • How to cater for daylight savings
  • How to recover from a power failure
  • Battery replacement
  • Disagreement between thermostat setting and thermostat reading
  • Reset to factory settings

What’s included in a Honeywell thermostat user manual?

While each user guide differs based on the type of thermostat and type of HVAC system, you can expect the following to be described in detail in your user manual.

  • Description of the interface – For non-digital devices, this simply informs the user of what each button and switch does on the thermostat plate. For digital thermostats, there is typically a lot more detail on how to manipulate the controls to access the various menus and features within the display. For touchscreen thermostats, each interface is element is described and detailed.
  • Key Controls – How to turn on / turn off the HVAC system or boost
  • Programming a Schedule – How to set a schedule to program when the heating or cooling systems should come on. This can either be a simple time schedule or based on the ambient temperatures read by room thermostats.
  • Changing batteries – The procedure to follow to change the batteries should be outlined, in cases where the specific model contains a replaceable battery or battery backup.
  • Installation instructions – Some owner’s manuals contain detailed installation instructions which include a wiring diagram and guide along with the procedure to follow to successfully set up the device. As thermostat installation typically involves electrical work, there are usually warnings in place for the process to be carried out by a competent professional. Instructions to Disconnect the power supply before installation are usually included!
  • Setup and configuration – Once physical installation is complete the device can be set up and configured for the first time. 
  • Troubleshooting – Most guides typically provide a troubleshooting table where the most common problems are listed along with the solution for each.
  • Multi-lingual – Most user manuals can be quite long as the instructions are repeated a number of times in various languages to cater to a wide customer base.

    I bought a home that has a Honeywell thermostat. I think the previous owner registered the thermostat, but didn’t delete it from his account. Because of this, I can’t add the device to my account. I don’t have any contact info for the old owner. What can I do?

      Hi Charlie,

      Depending on the model, either a factory reset could do the trick or you would need to contact Honeywell to have that specific device removed from their servers so it can be added again.

      The instruction manual for the relevant model should provide more information.

    I just recently moved into a Canadian rental condo. There is an old honeywell thermostat with no user instructions.

    It had a small non lighted led screen with large up/down buttons right below it.

    On the bottom, there is a off/on sliding switch on left side, 1/2/3 fan sliding switch on bottom center, and heat/cool sliding switch on right bottom.

    When turned on, display just shows a temp of 72F, when pressing up/down buttons, nothing happens. Outside temp is 4c

    When checking vents, I do feel some heat

    It has been pointed out to me that I need to renew the battery to my Smartfit Central Heating Controls with 24 Hour room unit.
    The Unit is working fine, all the functions work OK I think….but the display does not light up.
    I have the User Guide but there are no details regarding changing the batteries if indeed I need to!

    Hi TH411OU2005. And I can’t find in the Manuel how to fix the flashing year the rest of the screen is blank except for the select button I did everything from lookin at the breaker batteries ect.

    My local gas company installed an old thermostat a few years ago as it was the only one to fit the space. I inadvertently held the middle button down too long and now it is all screwed up and only the fan comes on. I can’t find an owner’s manual anywhere online. Can you help me with the instruction manuel for Honeywell #TH1110D200 at least that picture looks like mine. It just says Honeywell and then bottom right it says Pro Series. It is square with only three buttons a – button blank button and a +. HELP it is getting hot and I can’t get the air to come on.

      If you search for “TH1110D” above you should see the manual for the T1 Pro which is likely the one you are looking for.

      Both the installation guide and user guide are there and they contain troubleshooting instructions which you can follow.

      If you’re still struggling, then it may be time to call in the professionals to diagnose the problem.

    My wife is trying to switch our T1 non-programmable thermostat from Heat to Cool. I am not home so I can’t help her. She said it shows ‘Heat’ and ‘On’ but never ‘Cool’. She’s hitting ‘Mode’ and it flips between those two and never shows ‘Cool.’ We’ve had this unit for at least 4 years and we know that ‘Cool’ is an option. She cannot figure out what is wrong and I cannot find any help online. It is 85 degrees and cooking in that room and we need this thermostat to kick on our AC. We need help. We can’t find any help.

    I moved into a house with no instructions for the Honeywell thermostat. I think the model number is RTH2300B 10 12. I think it is set for the temp to go down certain times of the day and I do not know how to change it. I just want to manually set it when ever I want to adjust it. Please help

      Hi Kelly,

      If you enter RTH2300B in the search above, you will be able to access the manual for that model. It looks like a program schedule has been set which is why it is going down at particular times of the day.

      If you want to bypass the program and simply manually set it, then press the HOLD button and then press up or down accordingly. This will permanently hold the temperature and override the schedule. To remove the hold simply press RUN.
