Smart homes have now become part of conventional property management strategies as more changes continue to take shape in the real estate market. Implementing sophisticated technologies into homes provides numerous advantages, including increasing security and energy efficiency and improving comfort and quality of life. This paper examines the various features of smart homes and their implications in the field of property management to show the reader how these innovations usher in a new era of living in residential homes.

Smart Home Technology: Principles and Applications

Smart home technology refers to a wide array of technologies that would enable the automation and optimization of functions within homes. Such devices include smart thermostats, lighting, security cameras and doors, smart appliances, and voice assistants. The IoT technology has also been prominent in the growth of these technologies since the various devices can easily communicate with one another and can be controlled using a smartphone or voice.

Enhancing Security and Safety

Advanced Security Systems

Contemporary smart home security systems are among the best and guarantee residents' safety and comfort. Programs like motion sensors, surveillance cameras, smart locks, and video doorbells provide a security service. They have remote monitoring and control capabilities and can be used for real-time monitoring of properties by homeowners and property managers. For instance, video doorbells allow the occupants to identify and interact with the guests without physically opening the door; smart locks allow only authorized people to open the door without having keys.

Emergency Alerts and Monitoring

Smart homes may be fitted with smoke, carbon monoxide, and water spillage detectors that quickly notify residents of the situation and contact the relevant authorities if necessary. This manner of taking precautions ensures that such minor glitches do not turn into catastrophes. Realization of these technologies is beneficial to property managers since they automatically receive notifications of any emergent issues and attend to them to protect tenants and preserve the building infrastructure.

Boosting Energy Efficiency

Smart Thermostats

Smart thermostats such as Nest and Ecobee also regulate heating and cooling in a home, as they are able to recognize the occupants’ routine and adjust consequently. These are devices that can be managed from a distance and this means that a user can be able to dictate how energy is to be consumed when he or she is not at home. In terms of consumer benefits, smart thermostats decrease energy wastage, hence low electricity bills as well as reducing the carbon footprint.

Automated Lighting Systems

Smart lighting systems also contribute to energy conservation since the user can program the lighting control as required. This is complemented by installations like the motion sensors and the programmable schedules that make it possible to ensure that the lights are only on when necessary, hence cutting costs on electricity bills. Furthermore, smart bulbs can also control the brightness and color temperature according to the periods of the day, making them more efficient in energy usage and quality living standards.

Energy Monitoring

Energy display systems offer real-time feedback about the levels of energy consumption in a home and the potential for their upgrading. It is possible for these systems to monitor the performance of home appliances and recommend the best ways of making upgrades in order to save energy within homes that are owned and managed by individuals as well as commercial properties.

Enhancing Convenience and Quality of Life

Voice-Activated Assistants

Smart home hubs powered by voice-activated assistants such as Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, and Apple Siri are essential to smart homes. Such assistants allow people to operate different items without the use of their hands, including setting, turning on/off the thermostat, lighting, playing music, or even managing their calendars. The advantage that these systems present is additional benefits for people who live in such buildings as they make their everyday activities more comfortable and less time-consuming.

Automated Household Appliances

Wearable technology includes smart devices such as refrigerators, washing machines, and ovens that contain sophisticated features that make housework easy. For instance, smart refrigerators can track the food they contain and recommend recipes that can be prepared, a smart oven can be turned on from a distance. These innovations reduce time and effort and establish a holistic and efficient manner to living.

The Impact on Property Management

Enhanced Property Value

The application of smart home technology increases the value of the property. Houses with these features are marketable because people are interested in a shelter that comes with advanced features such as technology to control lights and air conditioning. Hence, many houses that incorporate the features of smart homes sell or are rented at higher prices than similar houses without such systems.

Streamlined Property Maintenance

In the case of property managers, smart home technology provides options for ease of maintenance and management. Remote monitoring makes it convenient for managers to manage several premises as they diagnose problems and arrange for repair without physically visiting the premises. These automated systems can also include daily tasks such as controlling temperature and lighting, thus lowering the workload of a property manager.

Tenant Satisfaction and Retention

The improvement of smart home technologies enhances tenant satisfaction by providing easy control, security, and energy-saving solutions. Tenants also value the convenience of controlling the environment in their homes and the perks that come with energy-efficient systems that lead to minimal power consumption. Higher tenant satisfaction thus leads to increased client satisfaction and less turnover time for the property managers.

Conclusion

Smart home technology is revolutionizing modern property management, offering a host of benefits that enhance security, energy efficiency, convenience, and lifestyle quality. By integrating advanced systems and devices, homeowners and property managers can create intelligent, responsive, and sustainable living environments. As technology continues to evolve, the role of smart homes in property management will only grow, setting new standards for next-level living in the 21st century.

Thinking about upgrading your home's security system and already have an Echo Show, Speaker or Fire TV? It could be advantageous for you to select a video doorbell and camera that harmoniously works with Alexa.

While most security camera brands have Alexa Skills, their levels of integration can be poor with missing features, delays in activating feeds, and then latency in the feed itself.

In this article, I talk through the types of features you can get, such as picture-in-picture on your TV when motion is detected, along with my top picks for indoor cameras, outdoor cameras, and video doorbells.

7.4 Blink Mini
Top Indoor CameraTwo-way audio for communicating with loved ones
6.8 Ring Indoor Cam
Runner UpSecure your home with voice announcements and live video
7.3 Ring Spotlight Cam Plus
Top Outdoor CameraColor Night Vision with motion-activated spotlights
7.1 Arlo Ultra 2
Runner Up4K Video Footage
7.8 Ring Video Doorbell 4
Top Video DoorbellBattery or wired-powered options
7.5 Arlo Doorbell Wire-Free
Runner UpGet a clear picture even in low-light conditions

Over the years, I’ve tested a multitude of security cameras & video doorbells from a variety of manufacturers like Ring, Blink, Reolink, and Eufy. I’ve experienced first-hand the cameras where the sync to Alexa-enabled devices “just works” as well as the problems other brands have in integrating.

What security camera brands work best with Alexa?

Alexa is owned by Amazon so it’s no surprise that Ring and Blink, who are also owned by Amazon, have a seamless integration into Echo and Fire devices. The same is true of Google Nest cameras with their Chromecast compatibility.

Amazon has made efforts to open up the Alexa APIs over the last few years, to improve third-party integration into the Alexa eco-system. There are now more than 100,000 skills in the marketplace which is proof of this.

Their main competitor Google now has an official Alexa Google Nest Skill, which you can install to stream Nest cameras to Echo and Fire devices. Most security camera brands have Alexa skills for their smart camera and doorbell ranges.

However, as of the time of writing, the vast majority of these third-party skills are simply not as good as the Ring and Blink skills, either lacking features or with major delays and latency.

Eufy is a good example of this where in my testing of the wired “Video Doorbell 2k Dual”, the device doesn’t actually show as a “camera” on an Echo Show (It shows as a motion sensor). While you can stream with a specific voice command, you do not have two-way talk and there is around a 15-second delay in showing the feed.

What does “Works with Alexa” mean in the context of security cameras and video doorbells?

“Works with Alexa” is a certification program that ensures smart home devices work seamlessly with Amazon's Alexa voice assistant. A large portion of smart security cameras and video doorbells available have a “Works with Alexa” badge, however, that simply means they offer at least one voice-controlled feature.

Below is a list of all the functionality you can avail of, by choosing a camera with the tightest integration into Alexa.

 • Motion Announcement: Alexa can announce that motion has been detected by one of your security cameras or video doorbells.
 • Doorbell Press Notification (Chime): Alexa can play a chime when someone presses your video doorbell.
 • Person Detection Announcement: Alexa can announce when a person is detected by one of your security cameras or video doorbells. These “camera events” are an improvement on Motion Detection and reduce false alerts.
 • Package Detection Announcement: Alexa can announce when a package is detected by your video doorbell. These “camera events” are an improvement on Motion Detection and reduce false alerts.
 • Two-Way Conversation: Alexa can facilitate a conversation with someone through your video doorbell or security camera
 • Live View: Alexa allows you to view live video footage from your security cameras or video doorbells on your Alexa-enabled device.
 • Picture-in-Picture: Alexa allows you to view the live video feed from your security cameras or video doorbells overlayed on what you are currently watching on a Fire TV or TV with a Fire Stick.
 • Arm/Disarm System: Alexa allows you to arm or disarm your home security system using voice commands. This can deactivate motion detection alerts from your cameras or doorbell.

Alexa Routines

It’s possible to achieve a lot of the above features through custom Alexa routines. For example, with the Eufy doorbell, there is no option to natively trigger the live feed to show on my Fire TV, when motion was detected.

However I was able to create a custom routine, that would trigger the command “Alexa, show doorbell” when motion was detected by the camera.

This workaround was pretty unreliable though, only working sometimes. This seems to be the experience for a lot of people online also.

If you’re interested in setting up Alexa routines like this, I highly recommend LifeHackster on Youtube.

Top Camera Brands that Work with Alexa

As of the time of writing, Ring is the only brand that natively offers full integration with all of the above features. However, you will need an active Ring Protect subscription.

Blink comes second, offering everything except Person and Package Detection. However, you really need the Blink Basic or Blink Plus plan as a lot of features are missing without them.

Arlo is the only “non-Amazon” brand that has relatively tight integration with Alexa features. Similar to Blink, it supports all features above except Person and Package Detection. Some features are missing without the monthly Arlo Secure subscription, however, you may be able to live without them, if you’re on a budget.

As for Google Nest, Eufy, Reolink, Wyze, Lorex, or any other camera brands; because of missing features or issues with delay and latency, at this point, I cannot recommend them for seamless integration with Alexa. That may change in the future as the Alexa API opens up a bit more and the manufacturers invest in that integration.

Best Indoor Camera that works with Alexa

7.4
Top Indoor Camera
Two-way audio for communicating with loved ones

The Blink Mini is a plug-in smart security camera that lets you monitor your home day and night, receive alerts on your phone when motion is detected, and use two-way audio to communicate with people and pets from your smartphone. You can even use it as a chime for a Blink Video Doorbell, and it works with Alexa for voice commands.

Specifications
 • 1080P HD indoor plug-in smart security camera
 • Live view and two-way audio, allow you to chat with people and pets
 • Personalized motion detection zones

The Blink Mini security camera is a good choice for anyone looking for a reliable and easy-to-use security camera that works with Alexa.

From my experience, its 1080P HD video quality is a little on the low side but just enough for an indoor camera. Its motion detection features allow you to customize motion zones and receive notifications for specific areas.

With two-way audio, you can communicate with your loved ones or pets while you're away, making it a great way to stay connected with your home even when you're not there. The camera is very easy to set up.

Unlike the Ring Indoor Cam, you can store footage locally with the add-on Sync Module 2. Although some users have expressed concerns about the camera's night vision and motion detection, the Blink Mini is still a good choice for anyone looking for a budget-friendly security camera that works with Alexa and displays feeds on an Echo Show or Fire TV.

What I liked
 • Good value for the price.
 • Local storage up to 256 GB with the Sync Module 2
 • Acts as an indoor plug-in chime for Blink Video Doorbell.
 • Decent video quality.
 • Great indoor camera for keeping an eye on pets or children.
What I didn't like
 • Some users report problems with connectivity and the camera going offline.
 • Requires a monthly subscription to access all features.
 • Only supports 2.4GHz WiFi
 • No PTZ capabilities
6.8
Runner Up
Secure your home with voice announcements and live video

The Ring Indoor Cam connects to your phone or Echo device, letting you see and talk to people and pets in your home. With a subscription, you can record and review videos for up to 180 days and connect with Alexa for added peace of mind.

Specifications
 • Connect multiple indoor cameras to cover your entire home.
 • Check your home live anytime with the Ring app's Live View feature.
 • Compatible with Alexa for added security, voice announcements, and live video feed.

The Ring Indoor Cam allows you to access live video and audio feeds, receive motion alerts, and interact with visitors using your Echo or Fire devices with ease. This camera operates on 2.4GHz WiFi with an AC power supply, so no messing around with recharging batteries.

Video quality is an important factor to consider when selecting your security device. Similar to the Blink Mini, this camera has a 2MP HD resolution, with a wide 140-degree field of view.

The Ring Protect plan, which comes separately, allows you to record all your videos, review what you've missed for up to 180 days, and share videos and photos. There is no local storage option compared to Blinks Sync Module 2, which is a downside.

Setting up the camera is pretty easy and only takes a few minutes. The main positive is the Alexa integration as there are plenty of other cameras with better video quality and night vision.

What I liked
 • Alexa integration
 • Great picture and sound quality.
 • Easy to set up and integrate with other cameras and the Ring app.
 • The Ring app is pretty good with plenty of customization options.
 • Small and compact design
What I didn't like
 • Required subscription for specific features.
 • Poor sound quality during live feeds.

Best Outdoor Camera that works with Alexa

7.3
Top Outdoor Camera
Color Night Vision with motion-activated spotlights

This security camera lets you see what's happening in and around your home, with wide-angle HD video, night vision, and the ability to check in live via your Alexa-enabled displays.

Specifications
 • Wide-angle 1080p HD video
 • 2 motion-activated LED spotlights and a built-in 110db security siren
 • Two-Way Talk enables you to speak to visitors from anywhere.

If you're in the market for a security camera that works with Alexa, the Ring Spotlight Cam is my top outdoor pick. With its 140° wide-angle 1080p HD video and color night vision, you'll get clear and reliable footage of what's happening on your property, day or night.

Plus, with customizable motion zones and smart notifications, you'll only receive alerts for the events that matter (Ring subscription plan required!)

The Ring Spotlight is a battery-powered camera. In other words, it’s easy to install but a pain to maintain, as you need to get the ladder out and charge it regularly! I highly recommend getting the optional solar panel to avoid this hassle as there are a lot of reports of the camera having a short battery life.

Or get the wired version, which unfortunately comes with its own headaches of wiring a power supply! The Two-Way Talk feature allows you to communicate with visitors (or intruders!) from anywhere. Similar to the Indoor cam, there is no local storage so you pretty much need the Ring Protect Plan which provides features like video recording and sharing for up to 180 days.

What I liked
 • An impressive wide-angle field of view
 • 1080p HD video with color night vision through its motion-activated LED spotlights
 • Customizable motion zones
 • Built-in security siren
 • Two-way communication is also a plus
What I didn't like
 • Ring Protect Plan (sold separately) to access all of its features, including the ability to record video and review it for up to 180 days.
 • While it's convenient that there’s a quick-release battery pack, the battery will need to be recharged regularly. (Unless you get the solar panel)
7.1
Runner Up
4K Video Footage

The Arlo Ultra 2 Spotlight Camera is a wireless security camera that offers 4K video, color night vision via the integrated spotlight, and 2-way audio.

Specifications
 • Ultra-wide angle 180° field of view makes it perfect for outdoor surveillance
 • Supports Continuous Recording
 • Integrated Siren / Alarm similar to the Ring Spotlight

Objectively I think the Arlo Ultra 2 is a better camera than the Ring Spotlight. However, in the context of this article, the Ring Spotlight has tighter integration with Alexa so wins out for that reason.

The Arlo Ultra 2 Wireless Security Camera is an excellent choice for those looking for a high-quality camera with advanced features. With a resolution of 4K and a field of view of 180 degrees, this camera captures crystal-clear video.

It comes equipped with a spotlight and infrared night vision, allowing for clear and detailed footage at any time of the day. It has configurable motion zones, which allow users to customize which areas trigger motion alerts.

Additionally, the camera features advanced motion detection, which can detect people, vehicles, and objects. This helps to reduce false alarms and ensure that users are only notified of the relevant activity.

The camera has two-way audio and an integrated siren/alarm to ward off intruders. It can be powered by a 6-month battery or AC power, giving users flexibility in their setup. The camera also supports data transmission via 2.4GHz or 5GHz WiFi and has optional cloud storage.

While there is some criticism of the motion detection on the Arlo cameras, my main criticism is with their new end-of-life policy which made the headlines recently.

They set the EOL to 4 years since the last manufacturer of that model which means you may need to replace cameras sooner rather than later. Despite searching online, I could not find an EOL for Ring devices.

What I liked
 • High resolution 4K Ultra HD images and videos
 • Wide field of view at 180 degrees
 • Motion detection with configurable zones and advanced detection for people, vehicles, and objects
 • Night vision functionality with infrared and full-color via spotlight
What I didn't like
 • Reliance on cloud subscription for some features
 • Higher price point compared to some other security cameras on the market
 • Some complaints about the motion detection

Best Video Doorbell that works with Alexa

7.8
Top Video Doorbell
Battery or wired-powered options

The Ring Video Doorbell 4 provides high-definition (HD) footage along with customizable privacy zones, dual-band Wi-Fi, and advanced motion detection features. Plus, connect to Alexa to keep an eye on your home and talk to visitors by saying, "Alexa, talk to the front door."

Specifications
 • Pre-roll color video previews
 • Can be powered by a rechargeable battery pack or existing doorbell wires
 • Full Alexa integration

The Ring Video Doorbell 4 is a wireless camera doorbell that comes with some nice features. With a 2MP camera, it offers a resolution of 1080p and HD quality of 1920x1080. The camera has a fixed focus lens and a field of view of 160° horizontally and 84° vertically.

It also has night vision functionality with infrared technology. One of the standout features of this camera is its motion-activated recording, which sends push notifications to your smartphone and Alexa-enabled devices. You can configure motion zones and sensitivity to ensure that you only receive alerts when someone enters specific areas.

The device also comes with two-way audio, allowing you to communicate with visitors from your smartphone, tablet, Echo Show, or Fire TV. Another advantage of the Ring Video Doorbell 4 is its ability to be powered by a battery, hardwired into an existing doorbell system, or plugged into an adapter.

The camera is weather-resistant, making it suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. It can also be integrated with Amazon Alexa and Echo Show for added convenience. Plus, it connects to both 2.4 or 5.0 GHz Wi-Fi frequencies, providing stable connectivity between the doorbell and your home network.

What I liked
 • 1080p HD video
 • Customizable privacy zones and audio privacy
 • Dual-band Wi-Fi
 • Compatible with Alexa, allowing for voice commands and announcements
 • With a Ring Protect Plan, record and review all your videos for up to 180 days
What I didn't like
 • Ring Protect Plan is sold separately and requires a monthly subscription
 • Requires a strong Wi-Fi connection
 • Battery life may not be long enough for some users
 • Some customers have reported issues with motion detection and video quality in low light conditions

However, one downside of this camera is that some of its features are only available with a cloud subscription. For example, cloud storage is necessary for video playback and image capture. Without a subscription, you may also miss out on some of the intelligent motion detection features, such as person detection.

While the Ring Doorbell 4 has received mixed reviews from customers, its overall performance is still highly praised for its clear video and audio quality, allowing remote communication with visitors. However, some customers have critiqued its limited Wi-Fi capabilities, poor battery life, and high cost due to subscription fees.

There have also been complaints about the device's delay in recording (despite the advertised pre-roll) and poor clarity in low-lighting conditions. Despite these drawbacks, the Ring Doorbell 4 is still the best video doorbell you can get with Alexa integration.

7.5
Runner Up
Get a clear picture even in low-light conditions

The Arlo Essential Wire-Free Video Doorbell is a battery-operated camera that can be set up anywhere and allows you to see your visitors, respond to them, and can be configured to trigger the siren automatically to deter intruders.

Specifications
 • Easy to set up and recharge wire-free doorbell with no wiring required.
 • 180-degree wide field view with detailed HD video quality and HDR
 • Pre-roll with the fabulously named “Arlo Foresight”!

When it comes to video doorbells that work with Alexa, the Arlo essential series is definitely worth considering. There are wired and wireless options to choose from and most users agree it has a quick and simple set-up process.

With a 180-degree field of view and 1536 x 1536 HD resolution, it captures clear footage of anyone who comes to your door. The camera also features infrared night vision capabilities that can illuminate up to 20 feet, making it easy to see even in complete darkness.

Well, let us make it easier for you in this article.

If you're interested in discovering the sophisticated features of the Zorachka Homam Smart Camera, you're not alone. Many of today's wireless cameras lean heavily on cloud services for data storage and for carrying out functions such as distinguishing between humans and pets, setting up motion detection zones, and tracking movements. However, it's worth noting that the continual streaming of raw video data from your location to the cloud can potentially raise privacy issues.

Recently Eufy had a glitch where users could see the camera feeds from other people’s homes, which highlights the problem.

Zorachka is looking to change all that with their privacy-first Homam Smart Camera. Check out our video review below and read on!

9.3 Zorachka
A Wi-Fi camera with end to end encryption

Note: Zorachka provided me with a free sample of the product for the purposes of this review.

9.3
A Wi-Fi camera with end to end encryption

The Homam 64GB is an indoor camera designed for home and business use. With features like embedded storage, HDR video technology, built-in chip encryption, and low-light performance, it can be used as a security camera, baby monitor, or pet cam.

Top Features
 • No monthly fees
 • Onboard storage of 64GB for up to 36 hours of high-definition content
 • Built-in hardware encryption offline sharing and storage of pairing keys and passwords

Within its body are a speaker and microphone to pair the HQ videos with audio. The anodized aluminum body and magnetic stand allow flexibility in adjusting the angle and freedom to attach it to any magnetic surface. There are also mounting screws for other surfaces.

Since it offers embedded storage for videos of almost 36+ hours, the Homam 64GB comes with no additional monthly subscription charges.

What I liked
 • Built-in encryption ensures your privacy needs are adequately addressed. All encryption keys are stored only on the camera and your phone, not on the internet.
 • Onboard storage means you can go through continuous video streams without missing huge chunks.
 • All features are unlocked, and you don’t need cloud storage, so monthly fees are non-existent (at least on all the current features).
 • High-definition video output using High Dynamic Range.
 • The camera has good night vision, which is made better by machine learning algorithms.
 • Hardware encryption ensures your passwords are secure from hackers targeting Wi-Fi firewalls.
What I didn't like
 • Price is always subjective, especially when it is listed as a drawback, but the Zorachka Homam 64GB camera is a little pricier than its competitors.
 • For some users, AI notifications might become interruptive in their daily routine. In addition, there is no way to tweak the motion sensitivity.
 • Camera is not waterproof and should not be used outside
 • Resolution is a little lower than competitor’s wireless cameras
 • No way to switch off the camera without unplugging it

Privacy by Design

One of the chief marketing points of Zorachka’s Homam 64GB is its privacy considerations. Instead of transmitting the original video feed to the cloud, like a lot of wireless security cameras, the Homam 64GB uses its built-in hardware encryption to share an encrypted output.

An encryption key is generated when you pair your phone with the camera. This key is stored on the camera and shared with your phone via Bluetooth. So the cloud gets an encrypted feed.

No Monthly Fees

Once you buy the device, all features are unlocked, and you won’t need to pay recurring monthly fees.

Since the feed is stored on the device, you can access it without using up cloud space which means all the storage fees vanish. In addition, there are no fees to unlock features such as pet/child detection. In short, you pay once for the camera and get all services for free.

Resolution

Unlike generic security cameras, the Homam 64GB records in full HD at 5 megapixels or 1080p resolution.

Furthermore, the camera also provides High Dynamic Range (HDR), which refers to a more nuanced luminosity spectrum. HDR helps with either too bright or too dark backgrounds, so your videos won’t be affected by sunlight from windows.

In addition, HDR also offers better contrast ratios and deeper blacks. As you can probably guess, HDR is more of a TV feature, and to see it displayed on a security camera box is nice.

Field of View

The camera is more like an ultra-wide GoPro camera when it comes to the field of view and distortion. Homam covers a view of almost 160º (depending on where you place it), which is at least equal to most of its competitors in this price range.

However, HDR and 7-glass displays bring the wild field of view into their own. Most ultra-wide cameras suffer from distortion or bright/dark regions on the edges of their video output. There are a multitude of reasons for this concerning optics and luminosity.

However, Homam’s High Dynamic Range and 7-glass system cover for the lighting inconsistency on the edges, giving a video output with the same contrast and color depth on its borders as in the center.

Storage

There is 64GB of storage onboard the camera, storing up to 36 hours of a high-quality continuous stream. Many smart home cameras start recording when they detect motion, which is great for saving up on space, but since there is no cloud usage for the Homam, it records continuous video.

This constant video storage is also helpful if you’re trying to figure out what happened before visible motion on the screen. In addition, if you encounter a heartwarming candid moment, you can go back and look at it without interruptions.

The storage is accessible via an internet link to your phone.

AI Notifications

Homam’s motion and sound sensors work with machine learning algorithms to switch between different modes and provide notifications to you, depending on these modes.

For example, if you’re away, the guard mode turns on and will notify you if there is an activity on your camera.

We should probably tell you that these notifications will modify themselves if you keep ignoring them, so you won’t be continuously disturbed by reports that you rarely pay attention to (in fairness, your phone does this and not the camera).

Timeline

If you’ve already spent resources on storing long consistent feeds, why not work out a timeline representation for your customers?

Well, Zorachka doesn’t disappoint. Since you have 36 hours of HD video (more if you use lower quality), the entire feed is presented in a timeline interface on your app. So you can browse through the past days to see if you skipped anything.

Build Quality

They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but the last thing you want to do is get a camera that is right in your face all the time and ruins the entire vibe of your living space.

Zorachka’s camera and its mount have a sleek, minimalistic design that’s easy on the eye and can blend in with most environments. The camera’s mount can be attached via screws or magnets, while the camera fits on the mount seamlessly by magnetic attraction.

The product has a sturdy magnetic aluminum body which is much better than the plastic equivalent of other cameras.

Night Vision

In complete darkness, the video is illuminated by 8 small IR LEDs inside the external lens of the camera.

Zorachka claims that its machine learning algorithms turn these LEDs on and off at precise moments, so that motion capture does not affect the contrast and gradient depth of the video.

This coordinated illumination makes for a much better night output. It is tough to know how much of an effect HDR has on night vision, but the logical assumption would be that it doesn’t hurt to have a more dynamic range of gradient.

Different Modes

The Nanny and Guard modes are built-in, which work with AI to send notifications to your phone. These modes can also be triggered by geo-location, kids detection, or by voice recognition.

Every mode has its own functionality range. For example, while using Nanny mode, you can talk with your kids and get notified if your kids leave or enter the room.

Guard mode offers more stringent activity monitoring, making you aware if there is movement in the wrong parts of the house.

Zorachka Homam Smart Camera: The Verdict

Zorachka’s Homam 64GB camera is worth considering for users who want uninterrupted lengthy video streams and are sick of paying monthly fees.

Its minimalistic and sturdy design, combined with excellent encryption and video quality, make it a good choice for buyers who are willing to reach a little deeper into their pockets.

Roku Bluetooth Headphones https://www.smarthomeperfected.com/roku-bluetooth-headphones/ https://www.smarthomeperfected.com/roku-bluetooth-headphones/#respond Tue, 30 Apr 2024 21:44:34 +0000 https://smarthomeperfected.com/?p=43155---4bbabd6b-e13a-4a00-9dfb-b5ac0e8e49f0 Learn how to synchronize your Bluetooth headphones to a Roku device and enjoy listening to music privately.

The post Roku Bluetooth Headphones appeared first on Smart Home Perfected.

]]>
Were you aware that even though standard Roku headphones lack built-in Bluetooth features, you're still able to connect your Bluetooth headphones with Roku? This feature has received highly positive feedback from a substantial amount of Roku users.

All you have to do to create your own Roku Bluetooth headphones is to connect them to the Roku mobile app and activate their “Private Listening” feature.

In this article, we are going to show you the different ways you can do that.

Connecting Your Bluetooth Headphones to a Roku Device

You can connect your Bluetooth headphones to your Roku device using the Private Listening feature on the mobile app. Once you do this, the Roku device will stream the audio via Wi-Fi to your phone, which then outputs it to the Bluetooth headphones.

Here’s how you can use the Private Listening feature.

 1. First, if you don’t have the Roku app on your smartphone, install it from the iOS App Store or Google Play Store.
 2. Next, pair your wireless headphones with your mobile device.
 3. Open the Roku app.
 4. At the bottom left corner of the screen, tap the Devices option.
 5. Choose the device you want.
 6. Once you select the device, go to the navigation bar and tap Remote.
 7. Finally, tap the headphones icon on the screen to activate the Private Listening feature.
 8. Your Roku device should display a headphones icon with a sound wave in the middle. This shows that the Private Listening feature has been activated.
 9. Note: For this feature to work, your smartphone and your Roku device must be connected to the same Wi-Fi network. So, before you start, make sure they are both connected to the correct network.
 10. You can check and modify your Roku’s network settings, by clicking: Settings > Network from the home screen.

Connecting Your Bluetooth Headphones to a Roku Remote

If you have a Roku remote with a 3.5 mm headphone jack on the side, you can connect your wired headphones for the Private Listening feature. One benefit of using this method is that you don’t have to go through any long setup process – it connects automatically.

Here’s how you can do it:

 1. First, check for the 3.5 mm headphone jack.
 2. Plug your headphones into the jack.
 3. The Private Listening feature will be automatically activated for you to listen to your music through the earphones.

One thing to note is that you cannot use this feature with Bluetooth headphones while using the headphone jack. Once you plug in a wired headset, it disconnects all other devices.

Connecting Your Phone to a Roku Device Via Bluetooth

You can connect your smartphone and any other Bluetooth-enabled devices to Roku devices via Bluetooth. However, this is only available to certain Roku devices, including:
– Roku Streambar
– Roku Ultra Model 4800
– Roku Ultra LT Model 4801
– Roku Streambar Pro
– Roku Wireless Speakers
– Roku Smart Soundbar

To connect your phone to your Roku device via Bluetooth, follow these steps:

 1. Go to the Settings menu on the Roku homepage.
 2. Click on Remotes and Devices.
 3. Under this, select Pair Bluetooth Device.
 4. Go to your phone’s Bluetooth settings and scan for the Roku device.
 5. Follow the onscreen prompts and pair both devices.

You should see your phone with a Connected status next to it on the TV screen, meaning the pairing was successful.

Common Questions Relating to Roku Bluetooth Headphones

How many devices can I connect at once?

You can connect up to four devices at once to your Roku device using the “Private Listening” feature. The only catch is that you have to use four separate devices running the Roku mobile app for this.

Is the Private Listening feature available for every connected device?

Yes, the “Private Listening” feature is available for each connected device. As long as they are on the same Wi-Fi network with the Roku device, you can listen to each show concurrently.

However, once you connect a wired headset to the Roku device, all other devices are cut off. This means that the feature is now only accessible through the wired headset.

How can I use the Private Listening feature for live digital broadcasts?

You can use the “Private Listening” feature for live digital broadcasts with an HDTV antenna connected to your Roku TV.

The following steps will show you how to set it up.

 1. Connect your antenna’s co-axial cable to the Cable In port at the back of your Roku TV.
 2. To set up Live TV from the home screen, navigate to Settings > TV Input > Live TV > Set Up Input.
 3. Using the on-screen prompts, set up the device.

Once Live TV is up and running, you can set up the Private Listening feature using the app.

Can I stream audio from my device to a Roku device?

Yes, you can stream audio from your Bluetooth device to your Roku device. First, you have to make sure both devices are paired and connected.

Once you play any audio on your device, the Bluetooth channel will automatically launch and play the audio.

What is the Bluetooth range?

The standard range for Bluetooth devices is about 30 feet. However, when you consider interference from walls, obstructions, and other signals, this drops to 20 feet.

So, for the best audio quality, always make sure your smartphone is within 20 feet of the Roku device.

The Verdict

Roku’s “Private Listening” feature compensates for its lack of support for Bluetooth headphones. In addition, its support for multiple users gives it a significant edge over similar streaming devices.

This way, it means you can technically enjoy owning a pair of your own Roku Bluetooth headphones and watch your favorite shows in peace.

Can Security Cameras work through Windows?

The first and obvious question is: can security cameras work through windows? The answer is – yes, they can! It’s not always a walk in the park though, as the glare from the camera may reflect in the window. Placing a security camera on your window is possible, however, you need to do your research before committing to one of the following options.

For starters, you can place the security camera on the inside and make it look through the window. Alternatively, you can mount the camera on the window from the outside or next to the window.

Infrared Issues

Installing a security camera indoors overlooking the back or front yard of your house can save you a lot of time and money. You don’t have to install extra wiring and look for a place to mount the camera. Plus, it won’t be affected by rain, snow, and wind. However, this solution comes at a cost: window glare.

Window glare causes footage to become blurry and washed out, almost entirely defeating the purpose of having a security camera in the first place. Let’s have a look at why that happens and what you can do to avoid it.

IR sensors vs pixels

Your camera can detect motion in one of two ways. First, it can use infrared light to sense the heat coming from a living thing (human or animal) on your property. If that’s the case, your camera may not work as well behind glass. The IR light will bounce off the window and be stuck in a loop, unable to reach the outside.

The other way cameras detect motion is through changing pixels. Cameras that measure the changes in pixels are a better choice for windows as they work just fine through the glass.

How to avoid window glare

There are several things you can do to avoid glare! For starters, try to position your camera as close to the glass as possible to avoid any light from entering.

But to get the maximum out of your camera through a window at night, you’ll have to turn off the night vision (the infrared LEDs) to be more specific. So when you are buying an indoor camera for the window, make sure its one that can turn off the Infrared LEDs.

You’ll have to use ambient light then, so make sure you have ample light outside during the night.

Passive Motion Detection

Some problems may arise when you expect motion detection to work through windows. Motion detection usually works through passive infrared technology, which means that cameras look for heat. The heat can be coming from a human or an animal that’s in the camera’s view, which would make the motion sensors pay closer attention.

Motion Detection through glass

The problem with windows is that they are made of thick glass. Modern windows are usually insulated, which means that they don’t let any heat through. That will prevent the IR light from reaching the outside. There are some exceptions with really old and thin glass windows. They may allow some IR light through, however, you can’t rely on it to work 100%.

Dual-Tech Motion Detectors

Microwave sensors in dual-tech motion detectors can sense motion through the glass as they work through sending out signals and analyzing the returning signals.

Option 1: Window Mount a Security Camera

Option 2: Security Camera through a Window

9.4
Top Pick
Motion detection based on image frames

Blink Mini offers 2 way-audio, motion detection based on frame detection, and a two year battery life in a wireless setting.

Top Features
 • Wireless with a 2-year battery life
 • Image algorithm for motion detection
 • 2 way-audio

Blink is part of Amazon’s smart home ecosystem, so just starting off integration with Alexa and other Amazon products is a given. The minimalist design of the camera also keeps it unnoticeable in any room or along the window. Lets dive into why this camera works as an indoor window camera: Frame based motion detection

Motion Detection

Like we’ve discussed earlier, if you use a camera through the window glass, infrared heat receptors don’t really work for motion detection. Blink Cameras use Pixel Difference Analysis for motion detection, which means they detect motion by comparing consecutive frames, and using AI algorithms to detect the type of object.

Blink Mini Subscription

While Pixel Difference Analysis works perfectly for see-through cameras, the bad part is that all that AI computing needs to happen on the cloud. So Blink cameras require a monthly subscription.

If you already have Amazon subscriptions, perhaps you can get some sort of discount on the subscription, but there’s no working around the monthly fees if you want all the features of this camera.

Night Vision

Blink has infrared night vision, and you can turn off the infrared LEDs from the app if you are recording through a glass window. Then, you need ambient light on the outside, and you can use the night vision.

Video Quality

The camera records in 1080p HD during the day and night, and can get up to 30 frames per second. It has decent video quality, however you will find cameras with better resolution in our list.

Additional Features

The camera is wireless, and comes with a two-year battery life. This makes it portable and easier to set up as well.

Furthermore, the camera has 2 way audio, so you can use it as communication in between rooms, or if you install it at your main door, it can work as an intercom!

What I liked
 • Blink Mini has infrared night vision, so turn the infrared lights off and it works perfectly in the night with ambient light
 • As an Amazon product, it is compatible with the Amazon Smart Home Ecosystem
 • 2-way audio means you can use it as an intercom or for communication between rooms
 • Wireless, can be set up without professional help
What I didn't like
 • A Blink subscription is needed
 • Cloud storage
8.9
Runner Up

Nest Cam Indoor from Google is a wired indoor security camera.

Top Features
 • You can control the Nest Cam with your phone and receive alerts about disturbances.
 • The camera provides a 24/7 live feed of what’s going on in its view.
 • The security camera is equipped with night vision.

You can view the live feed in real-time using your phone or watch it back several hours later. Send clips to your friends and family while keeping your footage safe with two-factor authentication.

To use the camera through a window during the night, you’ll have to turn off the Infrared lights through the mobile app or you can tape the LEDs shut as well. Just make sure they dont cause glare.

Motion Detection

The camera will notify you of any movement happening in its view. You will receive an email alert. One thing worth mentioning is that the camera is very sensitive. You will be notified of the smallest movements, such as your cat running through the frame.

If you only want to be notified in the event of real disturbances, you may subscribe to Nest’s monthly subscription service called Nest Aware. Naturally, it comes with a monthly subscription fee. You can test out the subscription for a month for free.

Audio

Ring Doorbell on Roku TV: 2023 Essential Guide for Flawless Integration and Streaming https://www.smarthomeperfected.com/view-ring-doorbell-on-roku-tv/ https://www.smarthomeperfected.com/view-ring-doorbell-on-roku-tv/#comments Tue, 30 Apr 2024 20:26:41 +0000 https://smarthomeperfected.com/?p=40986---33674041-2a66-4ec2-a734-20f2f1aeed61 It’s surprisingly easy to view your Ring doorbell on a Roku TV and it takes just a few steps.

The post Ring Doorbell on Roku TV: 2023 Essential Guide for Flawless Integration and Streaming appeared first on Smart Home Perfected.

]]>

Considering assimilating your Ring Doorbell with your Roku TV? Establishing a smart home system to link all your devices can significantly enhance the connectivity among your domestic appliances.

However, when it comes to smart home devices from different brands, it can be difficult or sometimes impossible to get them working together.

So is it possible to permanently connect your Ring Doorbell to your Roku streaming device?

Sadly, No. There is a way that you can cast your phone screen to Roku using the screen mirroring feature. However, this functionality is quite limited and very different from having these two devices integrated with each other.

In this article, I discuss some of the approaches people have taken to try and get these devices to talk to each other. I also provide some alternatives to achieving a nice picture-in-picture pop-up when your doorbell rings.

Is it Possible to View My Ring Doorbell on Roku TV?

While there is a way to view your Ring Doorbell camera feed on your Roku TV by using the screen mirroring feature, unfortunately, there is no proper way to connect a Ring Doorbell and Roku TV.

Ring Doorbell on Roku TV

Why Doesn’t Roku Have a Ring App?

Roku and Amazon have been fierce competitors ever since Amazon released the Fire TV Stick. Ring is owned by Amazon so they're in direct rivalry with Roku.

While there's no official statement from either company, the lack of a Ring app on Roku is likely down to this competition. Running a Ring app on Roku’s channel store is not in their best interest commercially.

The Amazon Fire TV Stick

The fact that Ring is not supported on Roku becomes more apparent when you consider the seamless integration of Ring Doorbells with Roku’s direct counterpart, the Amazon Fire TV Stick.

With an Amazon Fire TV Stick, you can easily view the live feed on your TV or get a picture-in-picture view when someone's at the door — there's no need to take out your smartphone or get Alexa to do it for you.

Roku Security Cameras and Doorbells

In reaction to this, Roku has introduced its own lineup of security cameras and video doorbells.

image

Made possible through its partnership with Wyze, these devices function via a dedicated “Roku Cameras” app that provides instant notifications and live footage directly through your Roku player or TV.

This move makes it very likely that Roku is keen on consolidating its technology within its ecosystem, with no possibility for a dedicated Ring app or third-party support for Ring cameras within Roku.

Can I Connect Ring with Roku via Alexa as a Bridge?

In the past, there was a workaround to connect both platforms by using the Alexa app as a go-between.

Sadly, this combination of a Ring-Roku-Alexa trinity – just doesn't work, and I know for certain because I've tried it myself.

Roku Alexa

When I asked Alexa to stream my Ring Video Doorbell, Alexa's response was …

“Sorry, Cameras don't work on this Device”

I looked around to see if there was any way around this, but I found a number of Reddit threads where users shared similar frustrations. (See links below)

Roku Ring Alexa

Also, the lack of any credible YouTube tutorials showing this working only confirmed my suspicions: Alexa doesn't support Ring devices on Roku anymore.

With Alexa and Roku, you're only limited to basic functions such as switching the Roku device on and off, turning up and down the volume, and simply opening apps such as Hulu and Netflix.

Alternative Approach – Screen Mirroring

As I mentioned earlier, screen mirroring from your phone to Roku is an option, but it's far from perfect.

This is mostly because it requires you to actively cast the screen onto your Roku TV, every time you need to check a Ring notification or stream footage.

Roku Screen Mirroring

You must initiate the feed on your smartphone and then, cast it onto your Roku each time. Which involves opening the Ring app on your smartphone and then casting the screen on your TV.

As you can tell, this is not very practical, since you might as well check the footage from your smartphone instead of going through all this trouble.

Can I Use Roku’s “IP Camera View” App to Stream Ring Cameras?

Contrary to popular belief, you cannot stream your Ring cameras using the Roku “IP Camera View” app.

Why? It's clear-cut: the app only works with IP cameras that follow ONVIF profiles or support RTSP. Ring cameras, unfortunately, do not support these features.

Ring cameras are entirely proprietary and closed off to third-party software and protocols; hence, controlling and accessing their footage is exclusive to Ring devices and apps.

So What are My Options?

Currently, apart from screen mirroring, integrating Ring cameras into Roku is not possible.

So if you’re hoping to integrate either of these technologies with one another to act flawlessly, you only have a couple of options.

Option 1: Bet on Roku

Option one involves replacing your Ring doorbell with Roku’s lineup of smart doorbells and security cameras. So if you're heavily vested in the Roku environment, this switch might make sense for you.

image

With this arrangement, your doorbell and TV will speak the same language and communicate efficiently. However, please note that you’ll have to abandon your Ring doorbell.

Option 2: Bet on Ring

The second option keeps you with your Ring Doorbell by switching your streaming device to an Amazon Fire TV Stick.

Ring and FireStick are both Amazon products; hence, they'll work well together without any issues or inconvenience.

Option 3: Give up and Move on!

The harsh truth! It ain't working and is not likely to work in the future so if you don't want to buy more tech then it's time to give up and move on!

Wrapping Up

Currently, the only option to view Ring cameras in Roku is via screen mirroring, but it’s not very convenient and defeats the purpose of using your TV to stream video doorbell footage hands-free.

So the only option is to pick between Roku or Ring. This means you can either ditch Roku players/TVs in favor of Amazon Fire TV Stick or replace your Ring cameras with Roku’s lineup of video doorbells and security cameras.

Are you cognizant of the fact that, according to data from the Environmental Protection Agency, heating and cooling systems account for about 53% of a home's energy consumption? This suggests that minor modifications to your HVAC system could result in substantial savings. Alexa thermostats, with their distinctive features such as personalized scheduling, auto-off during idle times, and user-friendly voice command functionality, are designed to improve energy conservation and cut costs.

I've had an Alexa thermostat for years (namely the Nest Learning Stat), and I can't recommend smart HVAC controls enough! They've definitely helped me and my family save money over the long term.

Other than the Ecobee4, you will need an Alexa-enabled device to control your system. For example: an Echo Speaker, Echo Show or Fire TV.

A C-Wire is generally required for smart thermostats to maintain a Wi-Fi connection.

What is an Alexa Thermostat?

An Alexa thermostat is a smart device that connects to your home's heating or cooling system and can be controlled using voice commands via Amazon's virtual assistant, Alexa. Some devices like the Ecobee have Alexa built-in while others need to be communicated with via an Echo speaker.

How to Choose the Best Alexa Thermostat for Your Home

There are a few factors you should consider before deciding on a smart thermostat. In this section, I'll go over some key decision factors and considerations to help you choose the right Alexa thermostat for your home.

Compatibility

The first thing you need to consider is compatibility. Not all Alexa thermostats work with all HVAC systems, so you'll need to verify that the model you're interested in is compatible with your current system. While most HVAC systems are usually supported, hydronic and millivolt systems have patchy compatibility.

Features

Different Alexa thermostats come with different features. Make sure to consider the features you need before making your final decision. Some models come with features like geofencing, dynamic schedules, HVAC health reporting, and remote temperature control, while others may come with built-in sensors to adjust the temperature based on your family's daily routine.

Price

Smart thermostats can be quite pricey, so it's important to consider the price when making your decision. Make sure to choose a model that fits within your budget. Also, consider if you need to have it professionally installed and if you need to run new wiring to the stat as that’ll add more to the final cost.

Design

While it may not be the most important consideration, the design of your Alexa thermostat is still something to keep in mind. A lot of thermostats are in prominent positions in the house, so you'll want to choose a model that fits in with your home's decor and looks good on the wall!

Warranty & Customer Support

When choosing a smart device like a thermostat, it's important to consider the brand's reputation. Some brands like Honeywell have been making heating controls for almost 100 years while others might be repackaging Chinese hardware with very little support when things go wrong.

Consider the warranty of the device along with the level of customer support offered by the manufacturer. You'll want to choose a company with a good reputation for customer service in case you encounter any issues or have questions about the product.

Online user feedback for the Nest thermostat is generally positive. One positive aspect that users commented on was the ability of the product to save them money on heating bills by learning their behavior. Another pro for the Nest was its ease of installation, with users expressing satisfaction with the clear instructions and included materials.

Alexa Built-In Microphone and Speaker!

This smart thermostat from Ecobee is the only one on our list that has built-in Alexa for voice control. It is easily installed and can be controlled from anywhere using your iOS or Android device, with room sensors that balance temperature based on occupancy.

 • Use the built-in Alexa to control the thermostat with your voice. Play music, set a timer or adjust the temperature.
 • Measure occupancy and temperature to create balanced temperatures throughout your home.
 • Power Extender Kit included for homes with no common wire (C-wire).

If you want to save money on your home's heating and cooling bills, the Ecobee Smart Thermostat might be a good option for you.

This thermostat claims that it can help reduce your energy bill by up to 23%, which can make it worth the investment. That being said, my thermostats on this list claim something similar so worth taking that statement with a pinch of salt!!!

It comes with sensors that can measure the temperature in different rooms, and it can adjust the temperature throughout your whole house accordingly. You can control the thermostat with an app on your phone or tablet, and it also has Alexa built-in.

The installation process is actually straightforward and everything you need is included in the box, including a Power Extender Kit for homes that don't have a common wire!

This thermostat is compatible with a wide range of HVAC systems such as heat pumps, conventional, dual fuel, single fuel, and more.

Insights

In the feedback, users seemed to appreciate the ease of installation and set-up of the Ecobee thermostat, along with its Smart capabilities. The remote sensors were praised as being a useful addition, as was the ability to control the thermostat through the Ecobee app or Alexa. Several users also mentioned that the tech support provided by Ecobee was helpful and attentive, making the experience with the product more positive.

One of the most common complaints was with the new UI update, which several users found hard to navigate and not user-friendly. Other complaints included issues with connectivity, and problems integrating the thermostat with existing systems. The lack of certain features like the ability to change time settings directly from the device was also a point of frustration.

What I liked
 • Room sensors ensure temperatures are balanced throughout your home
 • Easily install the thermostat yourself in about 30 minutes
 • Control the thermostat from anywhere using your iOS or Android device
 • Built-in Alexa allows for voice control of your thermostat
What I didn't like

 • Some users complained that the new UI design is difficult to use

The Honeywell Home T9 WiFi Thermostat with Sensor allows you to adjust the temperature in specific rooms, saves energy by reacting to your schedule, and has a detection range of up to 200 ft.

Top Features
 • Allows placing sensors around the home to focus on specific rooms, set ideal temperatures, and humidity levels while saving energy.
 • Uses geo-fencing to know when you're coming and going to make sure you're always comfortable and energy-efficient.
 • Conveniently manage the thermostat using Alexa, Google Assistant, Apple HomeKit, and more.

With the T9 thermostat, you can change the temperature of your house from anywhere using your phone or with voice assistants like Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant. You can also set it up to adjust the temperature automatically based on when you leave and come back home. This will help you save energy and reduce your bills.

Multiple Rooms

The T9 Smart Thermostat has sensors you can place in different rooms so you can customize the temperature in each room. You can also set it up to automatically detect which rooms people are in so you can save energy by only heating or cooling the rooms you're using.

A big caveat here though. From my experience, your HVAC system needs to be setup for multiple zones for this to work – the thermostat can’t instruct the system to heat one room and not another unless it supports it!

Compatibility

Before buying a smart thermostat, you need to make sure it works with your home's heating and cooling system. The T9 works with different types of heating and cooling systems, like gas, oil, and electric. But it doesn't work with electric baseboard heat. You also need to check if your home needs a power adapter called a C-wire to connect the thermostat.

Insights

The Honeywell T9 Smart Thermostat has received a lot of positive feedback from users for its smart functionalities and ease of use. One user praised its integration with Alexa and Ring app, while many appreciated the smart temperature sensor which helps regulate the temperature better and equally across multiple rooms.

The T9 has some negative feedback though. Some users experienced issues with connectivity such as poor WiFi connectivity and inaccurate thermostat readings. Some users experienced difficulty with installation or compatibility with their HVAC systems.

What I liked
 • Easy to install
 • Can save money and energy through Auto Home/Away Scheduling
 • Smart Room Sensors allow for multi-room focus
 • Compatible with various controllers, including voice control
What I didn't like
 • Requires sensors for multi-room focus
 • HVAC system needs to support multi-room with zones
 • Batteries required for power source
 • May require a C-wire or adapter

Frankly, the concept of “wireless coaxial cable transmitters” seems dubious to me. I must admit that in light of my previous experiences, I've yet to encounter such devices.

What I mean by this is, there is no way to wirelessly broadcast the core signal being transmitted through a satellite or television cable. It needs to be decoded in a box first and the subsequent video signal can then be wirelessly transmitted.

There seem to be two reasons for this. In a lot of cases the signal is encrypted and a huge amount of bandwidth would be needed to transmit the signal.

In this article, we will walk you through the various approaches you can take to wirelessly transmit video feed in your home.

Summary of what you'll need

Option 1: Cable TV/Satellite Coax > Set Top Box > HDMI Transmitter > TV

As discussed, cable and satellite signals are typically encrypted, so they need to be fed into a set-top box before broadcasting wirelessly around your home via a transmitter.

In this scenario, we feed the TV cable into a set-top box, and then output the HDMI video feed to a HDMI transmitter. This communicates with a HDMI receiver which is the video input on your TV.

Something to be aware of with this approach is how signals from your remote control are relayed to the set-top box. A good system will have some type of IR passthrough to bounce the signal across—a line of sight may be needed.

As the latency time is only 0.1–0.3 seconds, you will experience no drop or lag in playback. However, this HDMI transmitter doesn’t work well for PC gaming nor for real-time shooting.

Option 2: Media Device > RCA Coax Transmitter > TV

If your source box does not output HDMI, then the next option is to utilize an RCA coaxial transmitter. RCA is the 3-cable (red, yellow, white) feed which provides video and two-channel audio.

For this approach, your TV feed (cable or satellite) is plugged into your set top box which outputs the 3-cable RCA. This is plugged into an RCA coax transmitter which wirelessly sends the video feed to the receiver connected to your TV.

Infrared signals from your remote control need to be catered for via a relay.

This essentially acts as a set top box. From there, you plug it into a HDMI transmitter which then relays video and audio to your TV.

You can utilize any of the HDMI transmitters discussed above. Below is a digital converter box which could work for you. However, make sure to check whether your local networks are supported before ordering.

Benefits of a Wireless Coaxial Cable Transmitter

TVs in Another Room or Outdoors!

The ultimate reason people search for wireless coaxial cable transmitters is to avoid the need of running cables around the home.

It allows you to easily set up TVs in another room or even outdoors, without an excessive amount of cabling.

Along with support for your TV channels, these transmitters come with support for other media devices such as your Xbox, PlayStation, and your projector.

Good Range

Some of the most advanced cables are within a range of 10 feet to as high as 250 feet. This means you can have the equivalent of a coaxial cable transmitter in your garage and still get a stable signal in your bedroom.

No Wi-Fi Needed—Creates Its Own Signal

There is a misconception among users of devices like wireless coaxial cable transmitters. Many think this type of cable needs a stable and strong Wi-Fi connection to transmit signals.

However, no transmitter requires a dedicated Wi-Fi connection, as they come with their own. This way, even if the internet is down, you can enjoy your favorite movies by switching on to your regular cable TV.

Replace Your HDMI/RCA Cables—No Cable Clutter

Using an HDMI/RCA cable comes with some advantages. The greatest of them all is that it eliminates the need for physical hard wires for transmission.

If you are one of those people who prefers a neat and clean home, but the huge bulk of cables are making it hard for you to manage things, you should switch to the equivalent of a wireless coaxial cable transmitter.

Screen Mirroring From Your Laptop or Connect Security Cameras

Along with connecting your TV to the cable, you can also use the equivalent of a coaxial cable transmitter to “screen mirror” from your laptop. If you have a file to share with a bigger audience or stream a Netflix hit, you can do that using such transmitters.

Furthermore, they are also compatible with both indoor and outdoor security cameras. This means you can store and process video footage using them.

Common Questions Relating to Wireless Coaxial Cable Transmitters

What is a coaxial cable?

A coax or a coaxial cable is an electrical cable that houses an inner conductor surrounded by a conducting shield. Many of these cables come with a protective outer layer. They are used with electronics that require high-frequency electric signals with low losses.

What types of coaxial cables are there?

There are primarily three types of coaxial cables for transmitting video: RG59/U, RG6/U, and RG11/U. The RG59/U comes with a solid copper and copper-clad-steel conductor. The RG6/U is used for distributing satellite TV and Cable TV.

What are some common types of connectors?

There is a large number of connectors that all cater to different types of electronics. The primary classification of connectors is male and female. The female connectors are the receiving ends and usually hold the male connectors. Depending on the outline, there are circular connectors, the D-Type, IDC, as well as the multiple header connectors.

What is a wireless coaxial cable transmitter?

A wireless coaxial cable transmitter is a device which theoretically wirelessly transmits the signal from a coax cable to a receiver. As they don’t exist, video feed transmission is used instead. This is suitable for covering a large area and meant for distributing high-frequency signals. They can transmit high-quality HD video without any loss to the quality or condition of the transmitted signal.

One great advantage of using a transmitter is that it reduces the need for bulky wires. Some advanced cables also come with support for dual-band frequency.

How to extend the cable TV to another room?

There are many ways you can extend the cable TV range. The most effective way is using a splitter. Cable splitters can be used to run multiple TVs on a single cable line. This means you can’t watch two different channels using one cable splitter.

But if you want a more robust and comprehensive solution, you should consider switching to the equivalent of a coaxial wireless cable transmitter.

How does a wireless coaxial cable transmitter work?

A wireless coaxial cable transmitter would theoretically transmit the signal from the cable wirelessly. As they don’t exist, video feed transmitters and receivers are utilized.

They are a wireless alternative to the traditional HDMI cables, not to mention they can transmit video from your setup box or gaming console to your TV.

What can I use a wireless media transmitter for?

A wireless media transmitter can be used with any type of media equipment that supports analog or digital output. You can use them to stream content from your gaming console such as your Xbox or PlayStation.

Furthermore, there are many media transmitters on the market that allow the user to watch two different TV channels at the same time on two different TV sets.

The connection between your Samsung TV and Ring Doorbell has significantly simplified the process of monitoring and interacting with individuals at your doorstep. This convenience enhances your peace of mind and sense of relaxation as you loung back on your sofa.

So when your doorbell rings, a pop-up window or picture-in-picture will interrupt your TV program and provide a live view of who is at the door.

So what's the catch? Unfortunately, not all Ring Doorbells can integrate with all Samsung Smart TVs. In this article, I discuss what versions are compatible and which aren't along with alternatives to consider.

Ring Video Doorbell Press

Which Ring Doorbells and Samsung TVs are compatible with each other?

Not all models of Ring doorbells and Samsung Smart TVs are compatible with each other.

As of right the time of writing, only the Ring Video Doorbell Pro (pictured above) is fully supported with Samsung Smart TVs, launched after 2018. Specifically ones with the model numbers NU7400, RU7400, and TU8500 and above plus any smart TV model from 2021 onwards.

So if you want to view your doorbell footage (and receive motion alerts) directly on your Smart TV, you'll need to have the Ring Video Doorbell Pro.

If you don't have this version, click here to check out some alternative approaches.

Supported Features

Below are the features you can expect from the Ring Doorbell Pro and a compatible Samsung Smart TV.

 • Get alerts from your Samsung TV whenever someone presses the Ring doorbell button
 • Stream your doorbell’s live feed whenever there is an alert or when you can bring up the feed whenever you want
 • Use your TV to talk back to whoever’s on the other side of your door

Note: There have long been rumors about Ring and Samsung providing compatibility for other Ring video doorbells and security cameras. Unfortunately with tech giants like Amazon (who own Ring) and Samsung competing with each other across a number of product lines, I fear this may not happen anytime soon.

How to Connect Your Ring Doorbell to a Samsung TV

Here's the breakdown of the entire to connect these two devices:

 1. Setting up the Ring app and connecting to your Video Doorbell
 2. Setting up the Samsung SmartThings app and linking it to the Ring app
 3. Configure Ring notification options in the Ring app and the Samsung Smart TV

Note: If you've already been using both devices – the Samsung Smart TV and Ring Doorbell Pro – you can skip their initial setup.

Ring App

Step 1: Setting Up The Ring App

First, let's set up the Ring app.

 1. So if you haven't already, I recommend that you download it from the App Store or Google Play Store.
 2. Next, create a Ring account or log in to your existing Ring account.
 3. When your account is all set up, you will have to add your Ring video doorbell device and link it to your account.
 4. Check your doorbell's live feed and all its features before moving on to the next guide.
Samsung Smart Things

Step 2: Connect the Ring App with Samsung SmartThings

Next, you need to set up the Samsung SmartThings app.

Troubleshooting Steps

Unfortunately, whenever you are trying to connect the Ring Doorbell Pro to a Samsung TV, there can be several issues that will not allow access to the doorbell's camera footage.

So if you get a black screen when you try to access the live feed of the doorbell, or the TV won’t react to notifications at all, make sure these conditions are fulfilled:

 • Compatibility: First of all, I recommend you check the compatibility with the Samsung Smart TV. The TV is only compatible with the Ring Doorbell Pro if it’s integrated with SmartThings.
 • Updating the Software: If the issue involves software inconsistencies, it's best to check for any firmware updates/software updates and update them accordingly.
 • Factory Reset: If you have confirmed the compatibility and upgraded all the software to its latest versions, the last resort is to try out a factory reset. Unfortunately, you will lose some data, but a hard reset is sure to rectify any software-related hiccups.
 • Contact Ring or Samsung Customer Support: When all the above options have failed, your best bet is to get help from customer support, either from Ring or Samsung. They'll be able to figure out what's wrong and hopefully, come up with a solution.

Possible Alternatives

In case you don't have a Ring Video Doorbell Pro or a compatible Samsung Smart TV, there's still the chance to enable Ring notifications to your TV via Alexa and other third-party workarounds.

Fire TV Stick

1. Use an Amazon Fire TV Stick

To implement this without any hassle you need to have an Amazon Streaming device such as the Amazon Fire TV stick.

The post Alexa Slow to Respond? 8 Ways to Speed Her Up appeared first on Smart Home Perfected.

]]>
Ever found yourself shouting “Alexa!” only to be met with a frustrating delay in response? It appears that this is a common problem encountered by multiple users. Actually, I have personally struggled with Alexa's sluggish feedback, an issue that appears to be prevalent. Recognizing the significance of this problem, I decided to assemble this easy-to-understand guide to help navigate these hurdles.

I’ve broken this guide down into 3 sections:

 • Slow response times when asking general questions
 • Slow response times when controlling a connected smart home device (like a smart lock, robot vacuum, or smart bulb)
 • Slow response times in the Alexa App on your smartphone

If Alexa is not actually answering any of your voice commands, then check out this article here which is dedicated to that problem.

Slow response times when asking general questions

In this section, I discuss solutions for slow Alexa responses when asked general questions like “What is today's weather in New York”.

This could be on an Echo speaker, Echo Show Display, Fire TV, or other Alexa built-in device (like an Ecobee thermostat, LG Smart Fridge, etc.).

If you are getting slow response times when voice-controlling connected smart home devices, then jump to the next section.

speed test

1. Check the speed of your internet connection

Alexa requires a fast and stable internet connection to respond quickly. You can use a speed test website when on Wi-Fi to check your internet speed. (Or just Google “Speed Test” and there is a test built-in to the search results)

While there is no specific minimum requirement, I find that Alexa needs at least 1-2 Mbps to work properly. If your internet speed is slower than this, you may experience delayed response times.

If your internet speed is generally fast but for some reason has dramatically slowed down, then your provider may be having congestion on their network. In that case, it may be worth contacting your ISP to get an ETA on when their network will be fully operational again.

Wi Fi Router

2. Are other devices hogging bandwidth on your network?

When multiple devices are connected to the same home Wi-Fi network, they all share the same bandwidth. This means that if there are other devices using the internet at the same time as your Alexa device, they could be hogging bandwidth and causing Alexa to respond slowly.

For example, if someone in your home is streaming a 4K movie on their laptop while you are asking Alexa to play music, the streaming activity could be using up a significant amount of bandwidth, leaving less bandwidth available for Alexa. This can result in Alexa taking longer to respond to your commands.

To prevent this from happening, you can try disconnecting other devices from the Wi-Fi network or limiting their internet usage. Alternatively, you could set up a Quality of Service (QoS) rule on your router to prioritize Alexa traffic over other devices.

By ensuring that Alexa has sufficient bandwidth to work with, you can help to ensure that she responds quickly and accurately to your commands.

3. Weak Wi-Fi Signal with Alexa device too far from Wi-Fi Router

Sometimes, Alexa responds slowly because it has trouble connecting to the Wi-Fi. This can happen if Alexa is too far away from the Wi-Fi router or if the signal is weak.

To fix this, try moving Alexa closer to the router. If that doesn't work, consider using a Wi-Fi range extender or mesh Wi-Fi system to improve the signal.

Other things that can affect Wi-Fi strength include the layout of your home and the number of devices connected to the network. If Alexa is still responding slowly, you may want to check for weak Wi-Fi signal areas and take steps to improve the signal.

microwave

4. Is there Wi-Fi Interference?

Another factor that can cause Alexa to respond slowly or experience connectivity issues is Wi-Fi interference. Wi-Fi signals can be disrupted by various electronic devices, such as microwaves, cordless phones, and baby monitors, that operate on the same frequency as your Wi-Fi network.

To reduce Wi-Fi interference from electronic devices like microwaves, you can move the device away from the router, change the Wi-Fi channel, or upgrade to a newer router operating on a different frequency band.

5. Restart your Router

Restarting your router is an effective troubleshooting step that can help to resolve many Wi-Fi connectivity issues, including those that may be causing Alexa to respond slowly. When you restart your router, it essentially resets the device and re-establishes a fresh connection to your internet service provider (ISP), which can help to clear up any temporary glitches or errors.

To restart your router, follow these simple steps:

 1. Turn off the router: Locate the power button on your router and press it to turn the device off. Alternatively, you can unplug the power cord from the router.
 2. Wait for 30 seconds: After turning off the router, wait for at least 30 seconds before turning it back on. This allows enough time for the device to fully power down and clear any temporary data or errors.
 3. Turn on the router: Press the power button again or plug the power cord back in to turn on the router. Wait for a few minutes for the router to fully restart and re-establish a connection to your ISP.

After restarting your router, try reconnecting your Alexa device to your Wi-Fi network and see if the issue has been resolved. In many cases, restarting the router can help to clear up connectivity issues and improve the performance of your Wi-Fi network.

Alexa Counter

6. Check for updates to software and firmware

To make sure your Alexa device isn't sluggish, check to see if there's a pending software or firmware update. These updates can fix bugs and improve the device’s overall performance.

On an Echo speaker, to check for updates, you can simply ask Alexa to do so using voice commands.

 • “Alexa, check for updates”

If there are updates available, Alexa will ask you whether you want to install them.

Echo Show Update

On an Echo Show, you can do so by going to Settings > Device Options and pressing on “Check for Software Updates”.

It's worth noting that Alexa devices usually update automatically in the background when connected to Wi-Fi, so you may not need to manually check for updates. However, if you suspect that your Alexa device is not running the latest software version or if you are experiencing issues with performance, it may be worth checking for updates manually.

7. Power Cycle your Device

If your Alexa is slow to respond, here's a quick and easy fix: power cycle it.

To do this, unplug your device's power adapter and wait for 30 seconds before plugging it back in. It will take a minute or two to reboot, but then try using Alexa again as normal.

Power cycling your Alexa device clears its cache and can eliminate any temporary glitches or bugs that might be causing the slow response time.

8. Reset your Echo device

If none of the above works, resetting your device might help solve the problem.

You can reset your Amazon Echo to its factory settings using the Alexa app on your smartphone. Go to “Devices,” tap the “Echo & Alexa” icon, select the speaker you want to reset, scroll down, and tap “Factory Reset.” Confirm the factory reset.

Alternatively, you can reset your Alexa directly from your Echo device. The steps will differ depending on the model and generation of your speaker.

Echo Speaker

For example, to reset a standard Echo or Echo dot, press and hold the Action button for 5 seconds until you see a spinning orange light ring on the device. Release the button, and wait for the device to restart.

Action button

Echo Show

For an Echo Show, press and hold the Mute and Volume Down buttons for about 15 seconds until the Amazon logo appears.

Echo Show Mute Button

After resetting your Echo device, you will need to set it up again. Follow the on-screen instructions to connect it to your Wi-Fi network and sign in to your Amazon account.

Resetting your Echo can help to resolve many issues, including those that may be causing Alexa to respond slowly.

robot vacuum

Slow response times when controlling connected smart home device

If Alexa responds quickly to general queries like “How are you?” or “What's the weather like?” then your connection to Alexa’s servers and the performance of those servers is not the problem.

If you are trying to use a voice command to control a smart device in your home (like a smart bulb, or a robot vacuum), and getting a slow response, then the issue is more likely caused by that device.

Note: If a device you have connected to Alexa is completely unresponsive, then check out our other troubleshooting guide here.

Troubleshooting Steps

The above 8 troubleshooting steps also apply if a connected smart device is slow to respond.

 1. Check the speed of your internet connection – When you initiate a voice command to control a smart device (like a smart bulb), that action is triggered by Alexa’s cloud servers. So you need a fast and stable internet connection for that to work.
 2. Are other devices hogging bandwidth on your network – If your internet connection is maxed out with high-bandwidth downloads, then the Alexa server request may struggle to get through to the smart device
 3. Weak Wi-Fi Signal with the smart device too far from the Wi-Fi Router – Alexa can’t control a smart device if it’s not within Wi-Fi range. This is particularly a problem for robot vacuums and robot lawnmowers as they wander around. For that reason, you might get a very slow response as the message tries to get through.
 4. Is there Wi-Fi Interference – Again other devices like microwaves may be close to the smart device, causing interference.
 5. Restart your Router – Worth a try to see if it can clear any glitches in the Wi-Fi network
 6. Check for updates to software and firmware – This time, you need to check the smart devices app to see if there’s new software to install.
 7. Power Cycle your Device – Restart the smart device so it can try and connect again
 8. Factory reset your smart device – This involves resetting your smart device to its original settings. Specific instructions will be unique to the device so best to check the manual. You will also need to delete the Skill from the Alexa App and then re-add it.

Slow response times in the Alexa App on your smartphone

If you’re getting slow response times on the Alexa App then I recommend checking out my troubleshooting article here where I walk through the following.

Troubleshooting Steps

 1. Force close the app completely and then reopen it. This can help to iron out any glitches responsible for slowing or lagging app functionality.
 2. If that doesn't work, you can restart your smartphone. This can help to fix glitchy apps without too much effort by cleaning out temporary data stored in memory that may be causing a problem.
 3. Next is to check for an Alexa app update. Sometimes, there may be a bug in the app that has been fixed with an update. Checking for updates in the app store can help to take care of any pending bug fixes that may be affecting the app's functionality.
 4. You can also check for an Alexa outage online. Since the Alexa app is largely dependent on cloud services to operate, there may be occasions when Amazon web services suffer an outage.
 5. As discussed in the previous section, a common reason why the Alexa app may be slow to respond is Wi-Fi or internet connectivity issues. It’s worth checking both your own phone and any connected smart home devices for internet connectivity. Sometimes, a simple router restart can help to fix the issue.
 6. Finally, if none of these steps work, you can completely uninstall and reinstall the Alexa app. This should take care of any pending updates because you'll be able to download the latest version of the app from the app store.

Floodlight camera

Night Vision

Both brands offer several camera models with night vision functionality. Night vision is essential for providing clear images in low light conditions or complete darkness. There are two types of night vision: Infrared, where the camera uses infrared LED lights to illuminate the scene without emitting visible light; and Full Color night vision, which provides colored images in low light conditions through an advanced sensor or a built-in spotlight.

Swann cameras tend to use Infrared and Full Color night vision, utilizing either low light sensor technology or a spotlight to achieve colored images at night. On the other hand, Lorex cameras incorporate Infrared night vision and may include Full Color night vision through a low light sensor in combination with a spotlight or a low light sensor alone.

One important feature related to night vision is the infrared distance, measured in feet, which indicates how far the camera can capture images clearly in total darkness or ambient lighting. Swann cameras offer a range of infrared distances, reaching up to 200 feet with ambient lighting and 150 feet in total darkness. In contrast, Lorex cameras tend to have a shorter range, with some models capturing images up to 135 feet in ambient lighting and 98 feet in total darkness.

When it comes to built-in spotlights, Swann offers more models with this feature than Lorex. These spotlights help to illuminate the scene, providing a clearer view and enabling Full-Color night vision. Additionally, some Swann camera models have active deterrence technology in combination with the spotlight to discourage potential intruders.

Lorex also offers some camera models with integrated spotlights, and active deterrence is available in a few models as well. Lorex is known for its camera models with advanced low-light sensors that provide color images with minimal light without needing a spotlight.

Storage & Interoperability

Firstly, when it comes to on-board storage capacity, Lorex tends to offer more options with built-in microSD card slots. This feature allows you to store footage directly on the camera itself, providing more options for data storage and retrieval. Many Lorex models, such as the W881AAD-E, W452ASDB-E, and F461AQD-E, can accommodate microSD cards with capacities of up to 256GB. Swann also provides on-board storage for several models like SWIFI-COREPRO, SWIFI-TRACKCM32GB, and SWIFI-BUDDY with support for microSD cards of varying capacities.

In addition to on-board storage, most Swann cameras offer storage options such as Network Video Recorders (NVRs), DVRs or cloud-based storage, while some Lorex cameras also utilize Network Attached Storage (NAS) or FTP servers. This difference in storage options may influence your choice between the two brands, depending on your preference for centralized or cloud-based storage.

Interoperability is an essential factor to consider when choosing security cameras. This aspect allows for more seamless integration with other security devices in your home. While most Swann cameras listed in my research do not provide specific interoperability features, a few Lorex models like LNZ44P4BW, LNZ44P12B, and LNE9383 feature integration protocols such as ONVIF, RTSP, and CGI. ONVIF (Open Network Video Interface Forum) is particularly noteworthy as it promotes standardized communication between different IP-based security products, ensuring better compatibility with a wide range of devices.

Audio

Starting with audio features, it is evident that both Swann and Lorex offer models equipped with two-way audio. This means that you can communicate with someone in front of the camera remotely, which can be useful if you want to speak to a visitor, delivery person, or even to deter an intruder. The majority of models from both brands come with an integrated microphone and speaker, enabling the two-way audio function.

In terms of alarm systems, it's worth noting that Swann and Lorex cameras offer slightly different features. While many Swann models come with an integrated siren alarm, not all Lorex models do. For example, Swann's SWIFI-SLMFLCW model has a siren loudness of 75 dB, and the W881AAD-E model from Lorex has a 110 dB siren. These sirens can be crucial in alerting you and scaring away potential intruders, so it's worth considering this when choosing which brand to purchase. However, if you're not too concerned about having an alarm, then you have more flexibility in choosing a suitable model from either brand.

Guide to Facial Recognition Security Cameras

Intelligence

One key aspect that many customers prioritize in security cameras is smart integration with popular voice assistants like Alexa and Google Assistant. Swann offers integration with both voice assistants in many of its camera models, as well as support for Chromecast, Echo Show, Fire TV, and Google Nest Hub. On the other hand, Lorex also provides strong support for Alexa and Google Assistant in some models, and a few even offer integration with Chromecast, Fire TV, and Apple TV.

Note: Some integrations and intelligence features are restricted to those with the Swann Secure+ membership.

Another important consideration for potential buyers is the ability to configure motion zones and sensitivity. Motion zones allow you to focus on specific areas for monitoring while adjusting motion sensitivity helps reduce false alarms. Most Swann and Lorex camera models in my research offer configurable motion zones and sensitivity, however, this feature is limited to the cloud plan for some Swann models.

Motion alerts are crucial for a security camera system, as they notify users of any detected motion in real-time. Both Swann and Lorex cameras offer push notifications for motion alerts, helping users stay informed and react quickly in case of any suspicious activities. Again, some Swann models require the cloud plan for rich alerts and notifications.

A major selling point for security cameras is their ability to accurately detect people, vehicles, and other objects. These smart motion detection features play a crucial role in reducing false alarms and providing more reliable monitoring. Swann cameras come equipped with various detection capabilities such as person detection, vehicle detection, face detection, object detection, heat maps, and even animal detection in some models. On the other hand, Lorex cameras also showcase an impressive suite of detection features including person detection, vehicle detection, object detection, face detection, animal detection, people counting, and heat maps.

In addition to standard motion detection, some security cameras also offer other event triggers such as abandoned object detection, missing object detection, and video tampering. Both Swann and Lorex cameras feature models with these advanced event triggers, making both brands ideal for customers who require heightened security and monitoring options.

Lastly, perimeter protection features like intrusion detection and line crossing are valuable additions for many security-conscious consumers. Some Swann camera models offer this added layer of security, making them ideal for users who need comprehensive monitoring for specific perimeters.

PTZ

Regarding PTZ features, not all security cameras from either brand come with these capabilities. PTZ stands for Pan-Tilt-Zoom and allows a camera to cover a wider range and move in different directions. These features can be particularly useful for monitoring large spaces or when tracking an object in a specific area is necessary. In my research, I found that only one Swann model has PTZ functionality whereas Lorex offers several PTZ models. This could be an important factor to consider if you require a camera that can pan, tilt, and zoom.

Looking at optical zoom capabilities, a clear difference can be seen between the two brands. Optical zoom works by moving the camera lens and maintaining the camera's resolution while zooming in or out. This typically results in better image quality compared to digital zoom. In my research, I found that while none of the Swann models offer optical zoom, several Lorex models do, including the models LNZ44P4BW, LNZ44P12B, LNE9383, LNZ81P25, and LNZ2925SC. This makes Lorex the better option if optical zoom is a crucial feature for your home security needs.

image 1 13
Swann SWNHD-900PT
image 1 12
Lorex LNZ44P12B

Lastly, a closer look at the pan and tilt functionality across these brands highlights that Lorex has more models with these features. Cameras with pan and tilt capabilities can move in horizontal and vertical directions, providing a larger coverage area. These features are present in some of the Lorex models, such as the LNZ44P4BW, LNZ44P12B, F461AQD-E, and LNZ2925SC. Conversely, the only Swann model with both pan and tilt functionality is the SWNHD-900PT.

In conclusion, if PTZ features and optical zoom capabilities are important to you, Lorex seems to be the better choice offering more models with these options. However, both brands do offer cameras with digital zoom capabilities, and selecting a model ultimately comes down to the specific combination of features and design you prefer. Always double-check the specifications of each camera model to ensure it meets your individual requirements.

These devices combine the complexity and hassle of managing a doorbell camera and smart lock into a single device, minimizing maintenance and reducing unnecessary apps.

However, there aren't that many available for sale, so in this blog post, I talk about the possible options and approaches you can take, starting with a couple of my top picks.

9.0 eufy Security Video Smart Lock S330
Top PickCamera-Doorbell-Lock combination with a fingerprint scanner
8.5 Lockly Vision
Runner-UpFingerprint recognition plus local and cloud storage options

What is a Smart Lock with an Integrated Camera?

A smart lock with a built-in camera is a device that combines the security features of a traditional lock with the added benefit of video surveillance.

It allows homeowners to remotely monitor and control access to their property using a smartphone app and also provides visual verification of who is at the door.

Approaches

Choosing the best smart lock with camera enhances your home's security, providing you with clear visuals and control over who enters your home, even when you're away. There are a couple of ways you can set up a smart lock with a video feed. That’s either through:

 1. Standalone smart locks with integrated cameras
 2. Smart locks and security camera combo

As you can tell, both methods have their pros and cons. For starters, standalone smart locks with integrated cameras are not that common, with only a couple of models on the market.

Setting up both a smart lock and security camera allows you to get the best in class from each category. However, setup can be expensive and the two might not cooperate well together, especially if they’re not from the same brand.

Best Smart Lock with Integrated Camera

For homeowners looking to add better video quality and a sleeker smart lock/video doorbell, the eufy Video Doorbell S330 is the next best choice.

This smart device shakes up home security with a 2K HD camera, smart lock, fingerprint scanner, and smart functionality for remote and automated control.

2K HD Camera

The built-in 2K HD camera gives clear, HDR visuals for every visitor. It’s got a dual camera setup to monitor visitors and packages at the same time.

This helps minimize blind spots and make sure the camera records everything to a tee.

Alongside that, the smart lock also includes dual motion sensors to make sure nothing goes unnoticed.

Known Issues

Despite its features, the device does lack in battery life and app performance since many users have reported rapid battery drain and a lack of polish in the mobile app.

What I liked
 • Multiple unlocking options, including fingerprint
 • Two-camera set up to keep track of faces and packages
 • BHMA Certified and IP65 waterproof enclosure
 • Can interface directly with your Wi-Fi router, a dedicated hub is not essential
What I didn't like
 • Users report that the app could be more user-friendly
 • Motion detection is not up to the same standard as video doorbells or security cameras
 • Customers have complained about the short battery life
 • Touchpad is not peek proof
8.5
Runner-Up
Fingerprint recognition plus local and cloud storage options

The Lockly is a fully-featured smart deadbolt lock with a built-in camera that records in crisp HD.

Specifications
 • Video Resolution: 1080p HD
 • Two-Way Audio: Yes
 • Storage: 32GB Micro SD included
 • Compatible Smart Platforms: Alexa and Google Home/Assistant
 • Power Mode: 8 x AAA Batteries (9-12 months)
 • Available Lock/Unlock Methods: Fingerprints, keypad, mobile app, and physical Key
 • Separate Hub Required: Yes
 • Rekeyable Cylinder: Yes

Considering what it brings to the table, the Lockly Vision definitely earns the top spot. It’s got multiple access methods, a serviceable camera, and a microphone-speaker setup for two-way audio.

Camera

With regular HD streaming, the camera is serviceable. It doesn’t lag and many users have found that it does get the job done.

The camera is also tilted slightly upwards so it can get an easier look at whoever’s at your front door.

Camera Drawbacks

However, the camera is not a wide-angle lens, so it’s not meant to cover everything that’s happening around your front doors.

It doesn’t have night vision, so it’s best to automate a porch light to capture faces and details.

Also, the device doesn’t support motion sensors, so it won’t record automatically unless you stream via the app or somebody presses the doorbell button.

Storage

The storage options are also a big plus. The device comes with a 32GB Micro-SD card without a cloud storage service that’s begging you to subscribe.

The footage is stored in the included hub and streamed directly from this device to the mobile app.

What I liked
 • Fingerprint feature that’s fast and accurate.
 • Randomly shifting keypad that’s peek-proof
 • Seamlessly compatible with Alexa and Google Home
 • Two-way audio to respond to doorbells remotely
 • Offline Access Code function to provide temporary access to guests
 • The locking cylinder can be rekeyed
 • Easy installation with well-detailed visual steps and guides
What I didn't like
 • The camera’s field of view tends to be too narrow.
 • Testers have found that it is very susceptible to signal interference
 • The interface can be confusing for users
 • Cannot detect motion
 • Lacks night vision cameras

Best Smart Lock with Camera: Other Options

Besides these two, there are a few other devices on the market that may provide the same level of functionality.

However, due to poor reviews and the general lack of brand recognition, I cannot recommend these products.

Nevertheless, I’ve listed them below for reference:

Keyless Entry Door lock with 1080p HD video camera built-in
IP65-rated smart lock with similar functionality to the Lockly Vision

Alternative Approach: Setting up Separate Smart Locks and Security Cameras

As reliable smart locks with integrated security cameras are hard to find, many people opt to go for a smart lock with a separate security camera or doorbell camera.

Although this might be a hassle, especially since you have to maintain two separate devices, it can be more effective, especially if they are compatible with each other and can seamlessly integrate into home automation.

So, with that said, here are my recommendations for separate smart locks and security cameras:

8.0
2K Resolution Video and Instant In-App Locking/Unlocking

The eufy smart lock S230 and Wi-Fi doorbell can seamlessly interact with each other

Specifications
 • Video Resolution: 2K Ultra HD
 • Two-Way Audio: Yes
 • Storage: 16GB local storage with the HomeBase 2
 • Compatible Smart Platforms: Alexa, Google Home/Assistant, Nest Hub
 • Power Mode: The doorbell is hardwired, while the smart lock runs on rechargeable batteries (3-6 months)
 • Available Lock/Unlock Methods: Fingerprints, keypad, mobile app, and physical Key
 • Separate Hub Required: Optional but recommended if doorbells are non-Wi-Fi
 • Rekeyable Cylinder: No

This is the best combination of smart locks and doorbell cameras thanks to their native compatibility with each other.

This means that eufy has implemented the smart video doorbell’s app controls with the smart lock in mind, allowing you to toggle the lock instantly while you're monitoring the video feed through the smart doorbell.

Considerations

However, for this feature to work, you must ensure:

 • Both devices run on the same 2.4GHz network.
 • Both are connected to the same eufy account.
 • If either doesn’t have Wi-Fi capabilities, they should be connected via the eufy Wi-Fi bridge.

With these conditions set up, you can easily control the lock while directly streaming video from the doorbell camera.

What I liked
 • 2K Ultra HD video
 • Instant smart lock controls while streaming doorbell video
 • 16GB of local storage to review old footage
 • Fingerprints and physical keys for alternative/emergency access
What I didn't like
 • Both devices need to run on the same 2.4GHz network and eufy account
 • The combo can be a bit expensive
 • Some users have found the installation, setup, and linking of both devices to be a bit difficult
7.5
Keyless control with smart motion sensors and clear night vision capabilities

The Nest x Yale Lock & Nest Doorbell features a tamper-proof smart lock that ensures ultimate security for your home.

Specifications
 • Video Resolution: 1080p HD
 • Two-Way Audio: Yes
 • Storage: Can store up to 1 hour of recorded events locally
 • Compatible Smart Platforms: Alexa, Google Home/Assistant, Nest Hub
 • Power Mode: The doorbell is hardwired, while the smart lock needs 4 x AA batteries (one year)
 • Available Lock/Unlock Methods: Keypad, and mobile app
 • Separate Hub Required: No
 • Rekeyable Cylinder: No (keyfree cylinder)

Although these devices won’t necessarily work together, the convenience afforded by controlling both devices through the Nest app does make it a tiny bit easier.

So although it’s not 100% seamless, you can easily swap between the video doorbell feed and Nest x Yale lock without keeping your guests waiting.

Requirements

However, for this to work, make sure both devices are properly set up and connected to the same Google account. Otherwise, you might run into compatibility issues.

Also, they don’t need to be on the same Wi-Fi network, but it does help speed things up.

What I liked
 • Tamper-proof door lock that prevents lock picking or key bumping
 • Easy to install and set up
What I didn't like
 • Doesn’t provide same-screen access to the video feed and smart lock
 • Lack of physical keys or fingerprints as alternative methods to unlock
 • Nest doorbell uses 1080p resolution
 • Lacks a proper local storage option.

All things considered, setting up these devices separately doesn’t make for the smoothest control, but they can be reliable and oftentimes, more affordable than a standalone smart lock with an integrated camera.

Besides these two alternatives, you can also check out security cameras and smart locks from different brands. These might not mesh together, but you can still switch between the apps whenever necessary.

So check out these guides to learn more about smart doorbells or smart door locks.

Buyers Guide for Smart Door Locks with Integrated Cameras

Regardless of whether it’s a smart lock with a built-in camera or a combination of security cameras and smart locks, there are a few specs you need to look out for.

So in the case of these devices, you should be mindful of:

 • Compatibility With Your Existing Door: Make sure the smart lock can easily fit the cylinder or mortise of your door.
 • Integration with Your Smart Home Security Platform: Compatibility with your existing platform makes it easier to set up, control, and combine with your smart devices.
 • Camera Resolution: 2K Ultra HD is always a plus but tends to be more expensive
 • Additional Security Features: Data encryption, tamper-proof locks, and peek-proof keypads, these all can make a huge difference

Compatibility With Your Existing Door

Lock a Door Without a Lock

Before you jump the gun on buying a smart lock and security camera, you must consider the compatibility with your existing door.

So when doing so, look at the details: is it a deadbolt, mortise? How thick is the door thickness, and how wide is the hole cutout?

If these specs don't match, you might have to make some adjustments or even replace the door, which can add to the expenses.

Optional Hardware that Improves Compatibility

That being said, you won’t find a lack of options since most standard U.S. doors are adaptable and both the mentioned smart locks are designed to cater to most lock types and dimensions.

Take the eufy S330 for example, it comes with the option to pick the desired faceplate and you can also get in touch with their customer service to switch if necessary.

On top of that, they include adapters, additional screw holes, and spacers that fit the most common dimensions. This helps you easily switch things up without having to remodel your door.

Integration With Your Home’s Smart Security System

Best Smart Lock with Camera

Ideally, look for a smart lock that can seamlessly link up with your current system, allowing you to access all security features from one platform.

For example, the eufy S330 can seamlessly integrate with the eufy app, Alexa, and even other eufy cameras and bridge devices.

This improves its ability to send real-time alerts to your smartphone, keeping you in the loop about your home's safety without the need for additional apps or devices.

Similarly, the Lockly Vision has a dedicated app that allows for seamless remote control, no matter where you are.

Quality of the Camera’s Resolution

over the door camera

Your camera's resolution can dramatically impact the clarity of images, directly affecting your ability to clearly identify people or objects.

High-definition (HD) resolution, as found in the Lockly Vision, can provide sharp, clear visuals for better security monitoring.

However, if you need to track a wider area, you can go for the eufy S330. This device has two cameras with 2K Ultra HD resolution.

One can help you focus on people’s faces while the other can keep track of any packages left on your doorstep.

Additional Security Features

zigbee door sensor

Any lock collects sensitive data. This information, if fallen into the wrong hands, poses a severe risk. Therefore, data encryption and any other means to prevent others from getting your information is vital.

The Lockly Vision is secure because it stores data locally and encrypts it via a non-Wi-Fi wireless network. On top of that, it includes a shifting keypad with random digits that prevent bystanders from reading your keycode.

The eufy S330, on the other hand, uses bank-level AES-128 data encryption to protect the data transmission between your device and the lock, preventing would-be hackers from gaining access

How I Tested

For this lineup, I conducted extensive online research on smart locks and cameras to determine the best options for this guide. During my research, I focused on factors such as camera quality, lock performance, security level, ease of use, design, and additional features.

Research for this was pretty easy since very few devices managed to hit the mark. However, once I created a list of potential options, I whittled them down further by considering subtle aspects such as durability and advanced security features, night vision capabilities, and lock functionality.

After this, I was left with four options, two of which I couldn’t actually recommend. Regardless, I decided to mention them while highlighting the top picks.

FAQs

Can I Access the footage in a Smart Lock With an Integrated Camera Remotely?

Yes, smart locks with cameras typically come with a mobile app that allows you to remotely control the lock and monitor the camera feed in real-time.

So as long as you have an internet connection on your smartphone, you can easily access and manage your smart lock from anywhere.

What Happens if the Smart Lock with Camera Loses Power or the Internet Goes Down?

Most smart locks with cameras usually run on batteries to ensure the lock remains functional.

When it comes to internet connectivity issues, some models will disconnect from the Wi-Fi, so you might not be able to monitor it remotely.

Whatever the case, there’s always a method to manually unlock a smart lock, whether that’s by using a physical key or jump-starting it with a battery or power bank.

Are Smart Locks with Cameras Secure and Hack-Proof?

While no technology is completely hack-proof, reputable smart locks with cameras employ encryption protocols and secure communication channels to protect against hacking attempts.

Therefore, it is important to choose a trusted brand and regularly update the lock's firmware to ensure optimal security.

Can Multiple People Access a Smart Lock that Has an Integrated Camera?

Yes, many smart locks with cameras allow you to create multiple user accounts, so family members, friends, or trusted individuals can have their own unique access codes or digital keys.

This way, you can grant and revoke access to different people as needed, and track who enters your home and when.

Also, certain models will allow you to set up one-time codes or temporary codes for guests.

Can I Use Voice Commands to Unlock My Door?

Because of security concerns, unlocking a smart lock via voice commands is not recommended, not to mention such a feature is not implemented by these devices themselves.

However, they will provide many other secure alternatives, such as fingerprints, RFID key fobs, PIN codes, and in-app control.

The post Z-Wave Security Cameras appeared first on Smart Home Perfected.

]]>
A high-end Z-wave hub can potentially incorporate security cameras, thus enhancing its operational efficiency. While Z-wave may face some hurdles concerning direct video transmission due to bandwidth or networking limitations, it nevertheless offers various efficient ways to incorporate security cameras into its framework.

Why are there not many Z-wave security cameras?

Z-wave is a reliable communication protocol and it is used in many home automation systems due to its minimum power requirements, low bandwidth, and mesh design network.

Smart devices placed throughout your home can be connected to the mesh network via a smart hub and they can communicate with each other. Now, you might be wondering how you can integrate a security camera into this network.

Due to the Z-wave bandwidth being significantly lower than Wi-Fi, there are not many Z-wave compatible security cameras. The main reason is network security cameras operate with a high resolution streaming and the Z-wave protocol is not suitable for this. Similarly, outdoor Z-wave cameras are also less common.

Still, if you have already invested in a Z-wave network for home automation, there are a few ways to integrate a network security camera into a Z-wave network.

Requirements for security cameras streams

Typically, a good security camera with a resolution of 1080p and 30 frames per second requires a bandwidth of up to 5 Mbps. A Z-wave network supports a maximum of 1 Mbps, which is not enough to get that perfect live streaming from your security camera.

Integrating security cameras into the Z-wave network

The central piece of any Z-wave system is a smart hub. A Z-wave smart hub supports the Z-wave protocol natively and can be used to integrate network security cameras into your Z-wave home network. The only thing you have to keep in mind is checking whether the RTSP protocol – the video technology used by camera manufacturers for content streaming purposes – is supported by the home automation hub.

Another option is to use a software application or platform that can integrate network security cameras based on URL addresses.

Motion detection zones

Another key feature of the Reolink security camera is the capability of creating up to four distinct motion zones.

This means you have control over the motion sensitivity levels of each area and, as a result, you can reduce false alarms. You only get accurate alerts and notifications.

Storage

When it comes to recording and storing video content, Reolink offers plenty of options. You can use a microSD card or directly record on your NVR device or an FTP server.

In addition, the free Reolink app allows you to connect to the camera remotely via a mobile device or a computer. And if you have a Chromecast device, you can control the camera through voice commands.

What I liked
 • It allows remote access via mobile device or computer.
 • It works with Google Assistant and Chromecast devices.
 • It is suitable for outdoor use and IP66 rated.
What I didn't like
 • For this price range, other manufacturers might offer 8MP.

Previously, home security systems were often seen as bothersome and cumbersome. Today, however, they are increasingly recognized as a critical barrier against possible thefts. If protecting your family and valuable items matters to you, it seems the wisest decision would be to invest in a home security system.

Home Security Devices & Features

Not too long ago, security alarms were the best option in terms of residential safety. Now, individuals have their pick of the lot as far as security devices are concerned. From wireless technology to smart home hubs, home security is an entirely different ball game. The following are some of the more sought after security devices:

Security Cameras

Security cameras are one of the most popular gadgets when it comes to home security, and it's easy to see why. Indoor security cams offer you a view of what's going on inside your residence via live feeds or recorded content. Conversely, outdoor security cameras help you monitor the grounds around your residence as a preventative measure.

Internal and External Sirens

A security siren does exactly what its name suggests. When a siren is in work mode, it's armed to go off whenever activity is detected. You can find various types of sirens on the market – some are meant to be installed indoors, while others can be placed externally. Presently, however, sirens are generally a part of a security system that's connected to a smart hub through wireless technology.

Central Hub & Storage

The central hub is an essential part of an alarm system and can be likened to its brain. While sensors help detect activity and communicate with the central hub wires or radio frequencies – it is the central hub that controls and monitors all the sensors, sounds the alarm, and communicates the relevant events to you, generally through a phone app. Central hubs may also feature a storage capacity to record events and keep track of notifications.

Keypad

Some home security systems come equipped with an alarm keypad because it's required for setting up the system and arming/disarming the panel. However, some users may install an alarm keypad to secure the entryway(s) of their house. These keypads mostly supplement the overall alarm system and also conveniently provide a type of secondary on-site access point for managing it.

Panic Button

A panic alarm allows its user to send out a silent call for help in emergency situations. These types of alarms typically have two components – a panic button and a communication system.

The panic button is the device that a user will activate when the need arises, and for that reason, panic buttons are placed in easily reached locations that aren't visible to all.

Door & Window Contacts

Door and window contacts (or sensors) make use of magnetic fields to track movement near the sensors. When the magnetic field is disturbed by the opening of a door or window, the sensors send a signal to the alarm panel. Door and window contacts can be an excellent form of surveillance in a home security system – both as protection and a preventative measure.

Remote Monitoring

Remote monitoring offers an extra layer of protection when it comes to home security. The process makes use of your internet to send images that your security cams are collecting to an external monitoring site. The brilliant part is, these external monitoring stations can respond to any suspicious activity at your premises without losing time.

Types Of Security Cameras

1. Indoor Security Cameras

Indoor cameras are designed with the intent of covering the scenes inside your home, and because of this, they generally offer a wide range of view.

However, if you want to step up your indoor security, you can opt for PTZ cameras that provide an unparalleled 360-degree view of their surroundings. Investing in PTZ cameras also means that a single camera will be enough to cover any given area of your home.

2. Doorbell Security Cameras

Doorbell cameras (also known as video doorbells) are fast becoming a trend because of their versatility. This security device functions as a doorbell and a security camera. Video doorbells are fitted with a WiFi-friendly smart device and have recording capability. They also feature motion detectors and a speaker that you can use to converse with whoever is at your doorstep.

3. Bullet Security Cameras

Bullet cameras get their name because of their barrel-shaped construction. Unlike doorbell cameras, bullet cameras are a kind of visual deterrent and can be installed indoors as well as outdoors. This type of security camera is particularly famous for its ability to capture long-range images and the fact that its construction makes it impervious to extreme temperatures and glares.

4. Turret Security Cameras

Turret cameras can be recognized by their distinct eye-ball or spliced sphere shape. As a matter of fact, turret cameras are rapidly replacing bullet cameras because they can be easily adjusted and don't have any reflection issues. This type of security cam is usually preferred for outdoor areas such as driveways or backyards because they offer excellent night vision – both infrared and EXIR technology.

5. Dome Security Cameras

Dome cameras are renowned for their ability to offer users a panoramic view of their settings due to a moveable lens. These cameras also provide brilliant picture quality in low-light settings thanks to their dome-shaped construction. Another advantage of dome cameras is that their outer shell protects them from damage from any external elements. However, dome cameras are usually preferred for outdoor use.

6. PTZ Security Cameras

A pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) camera offers users the advantages of pan, tilt, and zoom functions. A PTZ's movement can either be controlled via a joystick via manual manipulation or a pre-set pattern through software. A PTZ camera has a wide range of coverage because it can swivel right and left. Apart from that, it can also provide an extended vertical optical range and a zoom range of up to 18x.

Storage Options

1. SD Card

Believe it or not, SD cards are an option for storing data from security cams, as long as your camera supports SD cards. Although, despite being reasonable-priced, SD cards aren't exceedingly popular as a storage option due to their capacity. Additionally, SD cards aren't a viable option when it comes to outdoor cameras due to their inability to withstand harsh conditions.

2. Wireless Streaming & Local Storage

Users with internet protocol (IP) security cameras that record footage 24-hours a day prefer a local storage option. That's because the HD cameras tend to eat up a lot of bandwidth and can strain your internet connection.

However, one disadvantage of local storage is that your data may be vulnerable because all of it is stored in one place. For this reason, many prefer to combine local and remote storage options so that the recorded data has a backup.

3. Wireless Streaming & Cloud Storage

On the whole, most cloud providers do not offer direct uploads from security cameras. However, thankfully there are a few camera manufacturing companies that have started providing their cloud storage solutions for a few of their security cams.

If you're planning on setting up a security camera surveillance system, you can opt for such camera manufacturers to enjoy the benefits of easy installation and storage set up. Although, this particular option generally requires users to purchase top-tier plans to enjoy the full benefits of the manufacturing company's cloud storage solution.

4. Ethernet & Local Storage (DVR / NVR)

Essentially, both DVRs and NVRs can be utilized for video recording. However, both devices process data differently. A Digital Video Recorder (or DVR) processes the video data at the recorder. Whereas, Network Video Recorders (NVRs) process data at the camera and then store it in the recorder. That's also why analog cameras use DVR systems, and IP cameras use NVR.

The crucial bit to remember is that both these options should only be explored where multiple cameras are involved because they're costly and complex to set up.

Power Options

1. Replaceable Battery

If you're hunting for an outdoor security camera and don't want to deal with wiring, then your best bet is a security camera that comes equipped with replaceable batteries. The biggest advantage of this power option is that the camera is extremely mobile – meaning you can place anywhere you choose.

One of the most popular choices in this field is the Arlo Go security cam that features 720p HD resolution with WiFi capacity. And, it's powered by CR123 batteries.

2. Rechargeable Battery

Security cameras with rechargeable batteries are another first-rate option for individuals looking for a no-fuss alternative. And, the best part is there are various selections available when it comes to rechargeable security cams – ranging from lithium batteries and mAh batteries that can be powered up via adapters or solar panels.

3. AC Plug

AC plug or plugged in security cameras get their power supply from your sockets (through adapters) like most electrical appliances. Generally, most security cameras that run on this power option run on 12 voltages. However, a few 12V cameras may require a specific AMP.

Plugged in security cameras are economical, despite opinions to the contrary. The amount of power they use to function is minimal, and their power adapters are quite durable.

4. Power over Ethernet

Power over Ethernet (or PoE) cameras use a network cable for network connection and power. The two types of PoE are PoE+ and standard PoE. Most IP cameras make use of standard PoE, which can send up to 15 watts of electricity. Conversely, PoE+ is featured in the more powerful security cam options that need around 30 watts of electricity.

Benefits Of Security Cameras

Thus far, we've gone over the various technical aspects of security cameras in this guide. But, now it's time to focus on what you stand to gain from investing in this type of security device. The following advantages may help you make up your mind about adding a powerful security camera to your home security set up.

1. Protect Assets

Be it your family or valuables; security cameras can help you protect them both. There's no telling when a law and order situation can get of hand. However, if your home is being monitored by security cameras – it'll certainly add to your peace of mind.

Moreover, security cameras also offer you the benefit of remote monitoring, which can be crucial when it comes to response time from the authorities.

2. Deter Break-ins & Assist Police in Apprehending Criminals

Security cameras are functional on multiple levels. They're not only capable of monitoring events, but their storage capacity can help identify the culprits of an invasion. Apart from that, security cams are also a visual deterrent, which means having a camera outside your home may reduce the likelihood of a forced entry.

3. Monitor Vulnerable Family Members & Pets

You can also use a security camera to keep an eye on the more vulnerable members of your family, such as an ill or aged pet or a toddler. Additionally, you can use your camera's live feed on your phone to watch over your family no matter where you are or to alert members who are home to impending dangers.

4. Decrease Insurance Premiums

With your home safeguarded by the protection of a security cam, you can even avail of the benefits of reduced insurance premiums by at least 6-10%. That's because insurance companies are more likely to offer you discounts when you have a strong security set up in place. The simple math is, the better your security system is, the lower your insurance premiums may be.

5. Peace of Mind

The fact of the matter is that we're all worried about the safety of our home when we leave it for whatever reason. The stress of not knowing how your family may fare in your absence can take a toll, especially if there are precious heirlooms involved.

Apart from the monetary and protection aspect, security cameras can promote more peace and tranquility in your life due to the satisfaction of knowing your home is secure.

Security Camera System Articles

Conclusion

Studies show that the presence of security cams can reduce the occurrence of crime by more than 50%. That alone should be enough incentive for the security conscious to invest in them.

Although, do keep your specific requirements in mind when you're thinking about installing security cameras. This will ensure that any camera you pick will seamlessly blend into your life without too much stress.

Choosing a trustworthy home builder is of significant importance for potential homeowners. The builder's expertise and capability significantly affect the quality of work, dedication to following project schedules, and proficiency in handling the budget. So, it's essential to comprehensively evaluate a builder's skills. Making careful and sensible choices can result in the creation of a custom home that effortlessly fulfills the owner's requirements and anticipations.

Homeowners should consider several key factors when selecting a builder. The builder's reputation, experience, and past projects are important indicators of their capability and the quality one might expect in their own project. It is also vital to evaluate a builder's flexibility and willingness to customize according to the homeowner's specific desires.

Evaluating Home Builder Credentials

When selecting a home builder, it is crucial to meticulously examine their qualifications, ensuring they have the necessary licenses, a portfolio of previous projects, a reputable standing, and comprehensive warranty services.

Checking Licenses and Certifications

A reputable home builder must hold all required state and local licenses. Clients should request the builder's license number and verify it with the appropriate licensing board. For instance, MT Construction Group should readily provide their licensing credentials upon request.

Reviewing Past Projects and Portfolios

Examining a builder's past projects offers insights into their craftsmanship and architectural styles. A thorough review of MT Construction Group’s portfolio can indicate their capacity for handling projects similar to the client's vision. Prospective homeowners should ask to see a comprehensive collection that includes various design approaches, materials used, and project scales.

Assessing Reputation and Reviews

A builder's reputation is often reflected in the feedback from previous clients. Reviewing testimonials, online reviews, and ratings can provide an understanding of how MT Construction Group or any other builder interacts with customers and handles challenges. Clients should also inquire about awards or recognitions received by the builder within the industry.

Considering Your Needs and Preferences

Selecting the right home builder is crucial to ensuring that your new home aligns with your lifestyle and financial parameters. Identifying your needs and preferences is the foundation of a successful partnership with a home builder.

Determining Your Budget

One's budget is the cornerstone of the home-building process. Prospective homeowners should obtain a clear and precise estimate of their maximum spending capacity to guide their choices. Pre-approval for a mortgage can provide a realistic framework for discussions with builders.

Customization Options

Different builders offer various levels of customization. From pre-designed floor plans with minimal changes to fully custom designs, one should assess their desire for unique features against the provided options. A list or table outlining specific desired customizations can be invaluable in this process.

Timeline and Project Management

Understanding a builder's capability to deliver a project within a desired timeline is essential. Scheduling and project management practices vary; hence, one must inquire about projected timelines and determine the builder's track record of meeting them.

Conclusion

Potential homeowners should seek builders who prioritize customer service and offer transparent, timely communication. This includes regular updates and being responsive to any concerns that may arise during the construction process.

As you search for various security camera options, you are bound to come across brands like Lorex and Nest. Lorex is renowned for its standalone security cameras that eliminate the need for monthly fees. In contrast, Google Nest offers a wide range of smart home devices, encapsulating a diverse variety of cameras in their product line.

We pit both brands against each other in our Lorex vs Nest showdown!

Lorex vs Nest: Indoor Wi-Fi Security Cameras

9.7

Lorex Full HD Smart Indoor Pan-Tilt Camera

No monthly subscription with 16GB local storage

LOREX

The Lorex Full HD Smart Indoor Pan-Tilt Camera is highly suitable for users interested in a 360-degree view of a room at an affordable price.
9.5

Nest Cam Indoor Camera

Infrared night-vision for 24/7 clear coverage
vs

Google

The Nest Cam Indoor Camera will appeal to buyers looking for plug-and-play security options with HD resolution.

Pros

 • High definition 1080p resolution for sharp images
 • Local storage with a 16GB microSD card
 • Works with Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa voice support

Cons

 • Pan and tilt may be a little challenging to manage for newbies

Pros

 • 1080p resolution with 130-degree wide-angle view
 • Compatible with Google Assistant, Amazon Alexa, and Philips Hue Lightbulbs
 • Infrared night-vision for 24/7 clear coverage

Cons

 • A monthly subscription to Nest Aware is a must to unlock some features
 • Some users have complained of extensive false activity alerts.

Features

Image Sensor, Resolution & FPS

The Lorex Wi-Fi Pan-Tilt Security Camera captures video 1080p with a 1/2.7” CMOS sensor at 30 frames per second (FPS). That may not sound too impressive, but 30 FPS is actually ideal for security cameras that offer local storage like this product. At 30 FPS, the image quality is far from compromised, and you have the added benefit of smaller files, resulting in more storage space for your footage.

Similarly, the Nest Indoor Camera records video at 1080p with a 1/3″ 3-megapixel sensor at 30 FPS. This means both products are pretty well-matched as far as FPS is concerned; however, the Nest camera has a slight edge as far as sensors are concerned.

Field of View, Zoom & Movement

This section will cover how both the Lorex and Nest cameras perform as far as the field of view, zoom, and movement is concerned.

The Lorex Smart Indoor Camera offers a 135° diagonal field of view with an astounding 16x digital zoom. The camera can pan (move horizontally) and tilt (move vertically) to allow users a clear picture of any given space.

On the other hand, the Nest Indoor Camera provides a 130° diagonal field of view with an 8x digital zoom, meaning the Lorex camera definitely has an edge over the Nest Indoor Camera in this area.

Power Options, Model Type & Build Quality

Both the Lorex and Nest camera come equipped with power cables that you can plug into your standard electrical outlets, which means both products run on electricity.

Another similarity between the cameras is their durable plastic construction. However, the Lorex camera seems more sturdy, thanks to its stout shape and one-piece structure. Conversely, the Nest camera features a platform (that you can use for free-standing operation) with a more streamlined design, making it more suitable for modernistic home decor.

Night Vision, Motion Detection & Audio

The Lorex indoor camera includes infrared night vision with a range up to 33ft. (10m). It also provides person detection and motion-only alerts. There's also a two-way audio capacity which means you can listen and talk to anyone inside your home via the camera.

The Nest indoor camera offers users the benefit of 8 infrared LEDs for clear images in low-light settings. The camera's alert type is audio and motion; however, you can only access the camera's person detection software after subscribing to Nest Aware. The camera also includes a built-in microphone and speaker to allow for two-way communication.

Storage, Streaming, Device Compatibility & Other Features

Lorex’s indoor camera offers a 16GB microSD card (upgradeable up to 256GB) for local storage so that your recorded footage is available to view whenever you require it. You can live-stream the recording on your smartphone, tablet, or Apple TV. Although, the Lorex camera isn’t compatible with third-party apps.

Whereas the Nest camera offers storage with a Nest Aware subscription, otherwise you can only watch the live feed. Streaming options include web browsers, phones, and tablets via the free Nest app.

Lorex vs Nest: The Verdict

The Lorex Indoor Camera is pretty evenly matched with the Nest's indoor cam in terms of specs like field of view, resolution, and image sensors. Lorex offers customers more in terms of aspects like local storage, more powerful zoom capacity, and a wider field of view.

Lorex Cameras are quite reasonably priced and offer top-notch infrared night vision for crystal clear picture clarity at night. But, Lorex's best selling point is the fact that the cameras come along with an upgradeable local storage option that allows users to view the recorded footage without any hassle.

Lorex vs Nest: Outdoor Wi-Fi Security Cameras

9.5

Lorex Smart Outdoor 1080p Security Camera

18 LEDs for superior night vision

LOREX

The Smart Outdoor Camera by Lorex is a cost-effective deterrence gadget with a whopping 18 LEDs for superior night vision.
9.3

Nest Cam Outdoor Camera

Nest Aware monthly subscription for full features
vs

GOJFK

Nest's Outdoor Cam is a robust option for buyers looking for 24/7 security and added features like person and facial recognition.

Pros

 • A weatherproof outdoor camera that can withstand temperatures ranging from -22 to 140 degrees Fahrenheit
 • Compatible with the Lorex Home app
 • Night vision range of up to 50 feet

Cons

 • No option for professional monitoring
 • Installation may be a little complicated for first-timers

Pros

 • Offers 130-degree wide angles, along with HD resolution.
 • Weatherproof and runs on power, so you don’t have to worry about batteries
 • Provides alerts for motion and sound disturbances

Cons

 • No alternative for local storage of recordings
 • Requires subscription to Nest Aware to unlock features like Intelligent Alerts after a 30-day trial period

Features

Image Sensor, Resolution & FPS

When it comes to cameras (of any type), image sensors, resolution, and frames per second (FPS) matter because they give buyers some idea about the clarity of footage they should expect. Additionally, an adequate FPS setting will ensure your recordings end up as smaller files, which is imperative for saving space regarding storage.

The Smart Outdoor Camera by Lorex comes equipped with a 1/2.8″ CMOS image sensor (slightly more powerful than the sensor in the indoor camera) and offers a 2MP sensor resolution. As far as video footage resolution is concerned, the camera provides 1080p HD resolution at 30 frames per second.

Conversely, the Nest Outdoor Cam is fitted with a 1/3″ 3-megapixel sensor and captures footage at 1080p at 30 FPS (much like the camera by Lorex).

Field of View, Zoom & Movement

The wider a camera's field of view is, the more space it'll be able to capture. Features like zoom capacity and movement can maximize user control for in-depth monitoring. That's why we're covering all three aspects in this section.

The Lorex Indoor/Outdoor Smart Camera has a 129° field of view and 16x digital zoom (similar to their indoor camera). However, unlike Lorex's Pan and Tilt Indoor Camera, their outdoor security cam doesn't include any type of movement.

As far as our other contender—the Outdoor Cam by Nest—is concerned, users can look forward to its 130° field of view with 8x digital zoom.

Power Options, Model Type & Build Quality

Apart from a few other details, outdoor cameras differ from indoor ones in one particular aspect—durability. Unlike indoor surveillance devices, outdoor cameras are exposed to the elements, be it harsh sunlight, rain, or snow. That's why durability and build quality, along with power options, should also be considered when you're thinking of investing in outdoor cams.

Lorex's outdoor camera comes with an IP65 weather-resistant rating, which means the electronic enclosure on the device makes it waterproof and offers protection from condensation and water spray. It'll also hold up against dirt, debris, and ultra-fine particles. Moving on to durability, the camera's commercial-quality construction is pretty indicative of its endurance. The wall-mounted cameras are well-built and don't feel flimsy at all.

Nest's outdoor cam is quite similar to the Lorex outdoor camera in this aspect because of its IP65 rating and build quality. Unlike Lorex cams, these appear more modern and streamlined thanks to their round and white bodies, which contrasts nicely with the black camera face.

Night Vision, Motion Detection & Audio

An outdoor security camera without night vision or motion detection sensors isn't going to do you much good. Thankfully, that's not a problem with Lorex or Nest Outdoor Cameras.

Buyers can look forward to Lorex's person and vehicle detection technology in their outdoor cams that are powered by advanced motion sensors. The cameras also feature a built-in mic and speakers to allow you to listen or speak with anyone near your premises. Finally, the camera also includes infrared night vision with a vision range capacity of 50 feet.

Nest fans will be happy to know that the outdoor cams offer person and facial recognition technology. They're also able to handle two-way communication like Lorex cams, and they also offer infrared night vision thanks to eight LED sensors.

Storage, Streaming, Device Compatibility & Other Features

This section is all about storage, device compatibility, and streaming options for the Lorex and Nest outdoor cams. Not everyone is amenable to paying a subscription to gain access to cloud storage for their recorded video footage. And if you're the same, then you're going to love the fact that Lorex offers local storage through a 32GB microSD card (which can be upgraded to 256GB). The device is compatible with Lorex's Home app and can be controlled via voice assistants like Google Assistant or Amazon's Alexa. Although, what we like best of all in the Lorex Outdoor Cam is its deterrence feature—the camera turns on its LED motion activated warning light when it detects motion to warn intruders they’re being watched.

Nest cameras offer 24/7 streaming; however, there's no local storage option, and you'll be required to subscribe to Nest Aware (after a 3-day trial) to access recorded footage and other features like Intelligent Alerts. Nest cameras are compatible with Google Assistant, Chromecast, Alexa, and Fire TV, which means you can stream live footage on your television. Or you can hook up the camera to other devices in your smart home ecosystem to come up with convenient power and time-saving automation.

Lorex vs Nest: The Verdict

It may seem like we're partial to Lorex Camera. Still, the truth is, the brand's outdoor security camera outperforms the Nest Outdoor Cam at almost all levels except field of view and image sensor capacity.

Both the Lorex and Nest outdoor cameras are IP65 rated, meaning they're pretty well-equipped to handle being exposed to all types of weather and temperatures. Plus, Nest Outdoor Cameras are fitted with ⅓” 3-megapixel sensors and capture footage at 1080p.

However, the fact the Lorex Outdoor Camera has a 16x zoom and includes a night vision range of up to 50 feet helps tip the scales in its favor. What's more, there's a local storage option, the cameras connect to the Lorex Home app (allowing for enhanced user convenience), and there's a warning LED light to boot.

Conclusion

There you have it, people. Our head-to-head Lorex and Nest Camera showdown has come to its end with clear winners all-around.

According to our research and examination, Lorex's cameras outperform the security cams from Nest in quite a few categories. However, the biggest beef buyers have with Nest is undoubtedly the Nest Aware subscription they're compelled to purchase to get full access to storage and other features.

We compare the different types of HVAC systems commonly used in residential buildings.

The post Smart Heating, Cooling and Ventilation Systems appeared first on Smart Home Perfected.

The advancements in smart home technology have drastically revolutionized the way we manage heating and cooling systems in our homes. Current configurations often include sensors, smart thermostats, and Wi-Fi functionality. These improved functionalities give homeowners the luxury of adjusting their home's climate using their smartphones or other devices, no matter their location.

These devices can learn users' preferences and adjust the temperature automatically based on factors such as occupancy and weather patterns. As technology continues to advance, it is likely that we'll see even more innovations in heating, cooling, and ventilation systems in the years to come.

I have used the Nest Thermostat for years now and it has definitely helped me save money with its self-learning schedule and Home/Away assist features.

In this article, I dive into the various types of heating, cooling, and ventilation systems available for modern homes. While there are plenty of non-smart versions of these systems available, the majority of newer systems have integrated smart tech to improve convenience for users operating the system while helping them to reduce energy consumption.

International Perspective

There are a wide variety of heating, cooling, and ventilation systems in use in homes across the world.

 • In the US, forced air systems are the norm, with a furnace delivering warm air and an air-con unit generating cool air.
 • In Europe, warm water systems are typical, with a boiler delivering warm water through a series of pipes and radiators. Southern Europe also sees more air con units used in summer due to its warmer climate.
 • In Australia, ductless split systems are common for heating and cooling.

Heating and cooling systems can vary dramatically from country to country, and even within a region, based on climate, building design, infrastructure, and local resources available.

Note: In this article, I use the terms “HVAC” and “Heating and Cooling System” interchangeably. While this may make sense in North America, the term HVAC is rarely used in a residential context outside of the US. So if you are reading from a different country, you can consider HVAC to refer to a “Heating and Cooling System” or “Central Heating and Air Conditioning System”

What is a Residential HVAC System?

A residential HVAC system, which stands for Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning, is a system that is designed to regulate the temperature, humidity, and air quality of a home.

This system typically includes heating and cooling equipment such as furnaces, air conditioners, and heat pumps, along with air ducts and vents that distribute air throughout the home.

Additionally, HVAC systems may include air filtration and purification systems to improve indoor air quality and smart controls that allow homeowners to adjust settings and monitor energy usage.

General Types of Heating & Cooling Systems

1. Standard Heating and Cooling Split Systems

Standard heating and cooling split systems are the most popular and common types of residential HVAC systems. They have separate units for heating and cooling purposes. One of them is an indoor unit, and the other is an outdoor unit.

The cooling unit of such HVAC systems is installed outside. The outdoor unit consists of compressors, refrigerant, and coils for cooling purposes. Moreover, there is a fan to blow out hot air.

The heating unit or indoor unit is placed somewhere in a storage area. This unit is typically a gas furnace. The temperature is controlled using a thermostat, and the hot air is distributed in the house via a fan through ductwork.

You can easily control this HVAC system with a simple thermostat to maintain the temperature inside the house. These are the simplest units in terms of installation.

What I liked
 • The heating and cooling split systems are cheaper compared to other HVAC systems.
 • They have lower operating costs as gas furnaces are more affordable as compared to oil furnaces or boilers.
 • Their efficiency ranges from 80% to 99%. Low-efficiency furnaces are more budget-friendly.
What I didn't like
 • Installation of a standard split system requires ductwork.
 • There is a risk of carbon monoxide leaks or explosions because of the gas furnace.

2. Heat Pump System

Heat Pump systems are very popular these days, and the industry is booming. There are 3 broad categories of heat pump systems.

 • Air-to-Air: is used in modern HVAC systems (as an alternative to a furnace and air conditioning unit)
 • Air-to-Water: transfers heat from the air into the water which is distributed in pipes under floors and into radiators
 • Ground/Water-to-Water: transfers heat underground or from rivers/lakes to pipes in the home.

Heat pumps perform both heating and cooling operations. They use refrigerant (circulating it with a compressor’s help) to achieve high and low-temperature requirements.

For cooling purposes, the refrigerant absorbs heat from the air. The refrigerant turns into a high-pressure liquid from low-pressure gas. The compressor then sends the refrigerant to the outdoor unit, where the fan blows the heat out of the refrigerant, leaving a low-pressure gas behind.

In heating, the process is reversed as refrigerant absorbs heat from the outdoor unit and releases it to the indoor coils.

The indoor unit is like an air handler that spreads the hot/cool air through the system with a blower’s help.

What I liked
 • They have relatively lower equipment costs as compared to geothermal heat pumps.
 • The air source heat pumps have lower operating costs.
What I didn't like
 • They are less efficient when it comes to heating in extreme cold. Moreover, the heat pump system requires a secondary heating system to meet the requirements.
 • They require ductwork for installation.
 • As the refrigerant absorbs and releases the air into the atmosphere, it can spread odor and dust.

3. Hybrid Split / Dual-Fuel System

The Hybrid Split HVAC system is more like a Standard Heating and Cooling system with add on features. As the name implies, the dual-fuel system, the hybrid split runs with two different heat sources depending on the weather conditions.

When the temperature outside is freezing, the hybrid split system uses furnace heat for heating the home. As the temperature outside rises above the freezing point, the hybrid system switches to a traditional electric heat pump mechanism.

The ability to switch between gas and electric power distinguishes the hybrid split system from other HVAC systems. These systems can be controlled using thermostats and are compatible with traditional ductwork.

Hybrid Split systems are energy efficient and are a great way to reduce energy costs in mild climate areas.

What I liked
 • The Dual-Fuel system is energy efficient, reducing annual energy costs.
 • You can control the system using simple thermostats.
 • They are compatible with traditional ductwork.
 • They perform efficiently in colder regions.
What I didn't like
 • They are costly compared to the traditional split or dedicated heat pump systems.
 • They require ductwork for installation.

4. Mini-Split System

Mini-Split systems come either as an air conditioner or as a heat pump that performs both heating and cooling. They have an indoor and outdoor unit and can support multiple indoor units. The indoor unit disperses the air through the fan.

Multiple indoor units allow independent control of temperature in each room. You can either use a single indoor and outdoor unit or go for multiple indoor units accompanied by a single outdoor unit having large BTU values.

They function just like a standard heat pump using inverter technology. These systems are ductless.

Installing a mini-split system can be more expensive. But these initial costs can save you money in the long run. You can easily conserve energy by only using the units in the occupied rooms hence saving the cost of heating or cooling an empty room.

What I liked
 • The annual energy costs of mini-split systems is less.
 • Ductwork is not needed for installation
 • You can heat up or cool down individual zones.
 • These are high-performance HVAC systems.
What I didn't like
 • The setup cost is high.
 • The system can require regular maintenance.

5. Packaged System

The packaged system has all its heating and cooling components in one large unit and is best suited for small houses. These systems can be placed in outdoor or even indoor storage areas.

The packaged system has a blower for dispersing the hot/cool air throughout the house and withdrawing the atmosphere’s untreated air.

The packaged system performs heating and cooling, depending on the type of unit installed.

The most popular units are:

 • Gas/Electric: An air conditioner and a gas/electric furnace
 • Heat Pump: Both heating and cooling are performed by a single unit
 • Hybrid: A heat pump and a gas furnace as a secondary heating device

This system is very efficient and budget-friendly. The maintenance costs are also lower. But such systems are not best suited for excellent heating performance in extreme cold.

What I liked
 • The equipment cost is less compared to other HVAC systems.
 • They have a small physical footprint.
 • The maintenance costs are lower.
What I didn't like
 • They offer fewer options compared to other standard HVAC systems.
 • They are not as efficient when it comes to heating.

6. Water Based Boiler System with AC

Water-based boiler systems are efficient but costly. Such HVAC systems use hot water that is distributed throughout the house in pipes to generate heat.

They are the norm in most of Europe and growing in popularity in the US.

The boiler system sets up zonal control allowing different temperature settings in each room. They can be installed without ducts, but this is only for heating purposes. If you need central air conditioning, you have to install vents.

Boilers come in different sizes and types. You can use gas, oil, or electricity to heat the boiler’s water, mostly a sealed vessel. The hot water is finally sent to the radiator or a fan coil that heats the atmosphere.

You can also install hot water pipes in the subfloor to radiate heat through the floor. This provides a comfortable and cozy environment during winter.

What I liked
 • It is an efficient heating system.
 • You can get hot water for domestic needs like laundry and bathing using combi boilers.
What I didn't like
 • It is expensive to install boilers and radiant floor pipes.
 • You need to install radiant floor pipes.
 • Such heating systems take time to reach the desired temperature and operate slowly.

7. Ground Source / Geothermal Heat Pump Systems

Geothermal heat pumps are favored as they use renewable energy. Geothermal systems achieve heating and cooling requirements by circulating hot and cold water in the pipes underground.

The water in the pipes has refrigerant that helps in absorbing heat from the ground in winter. It is easier to absorb heat underground as the temperature is 50 to 60 degrees below ground.

In summer, the refrigerant absorbs heat from the house and dumps it into the relatively cool ground. It is an eco-friendly mechanism for heating and cooling the home.

Geothermal heat pumps are very efficient and great for delivering desired temperatures. The annual energy costs are far lower than other HVAC systems. But setting up a geothermal system is quite expensive.

What I liked
 • Geothermal heat pumps are very efficient and eco-friendly.
 • They are energy and cost-efficient to run
What I didn't like
 • They are very expensive to install
 • Maintenance and repair are costly and challenging at the same time.

8. Electric Furnace / Electric Resistance Heaters & AC System

Electric Resistance Heaters and standalone AC Systems are affordable but consume the most energy. They are best suited for homes that require the least amount of heating. Such systems convert electricity into heat. Electric resistance heat is achieved through either of them:

 • Baseboard heaters
 • Radiant heaters
 • Space heaters
 • Wall heaters
 • Furnaces

For heating, the air is blown through a heating element, which moves to resistance coils through blowers. The heated air then disperses throughout the home through supply ducts.

For cooling, the air is cooled using AC’s cooling coil, connected to the furnace fan that blows the hot air over the cooling coil and then distributes the cool air throughout the home using the same air ducts.

These HVAC systems are the most effective as the electrical energy is dedicated to heating and cooling only. They are also eco-friendly as carbon monoxide is not produced.

What I liked
 • It is the most effective heating and cooling system.
 • This HVAC system is budget-friendly and is relatively inexpensive.
What I didn't like
 • It consumes the most energy resulting in higher utility costs.
 • They are best for occasional heating requirements.

What is the difference between forced air and radiant heat systems?

A gas furnace produces forced air heat. The air gets heated in the furnace and then blown into the duct system to get distributed throughout the entire house.

The forced air heating technique is used in most common HVAC systems in the United States, including standard heating and cooling split systems, heat pump systems, and hybrid systems.

Radiant heat is more efficient as it is distributed through subfloor pipes. The heat is distributed evenly in this method. Radiant heat is used in water-based boiler systems and geothermal heat pump systems where hot water is radiated through pipes in the house to in-room radiators.
