Recent reports suggest that numerous Ring doorbell users are encountering issues with the doorbell chime and with connections. This might be attributable to a Ring-produced chime, a chime from an alternate manufacturer, or possibly even the Ring Video Doorbell itself. Regardless, there's no reason to panic, as you've landed on a platform that can provide you with the help you need.

Our Ring troubleshooting article includes two sections for your convenience: users with a mechanical chime and users with a Ring chime. All you need to do is pick the right option and follow the problem-solving steps.

Option 1: If your Ring doorbell is wired into your old mechanical chime

As the heading suggests, this section will contain troubleshooting steps for users with a Ring doorbell and a mechanical chime by another brand.

If you’re unsure whether your current chime is mechanical or otherwise, you can tell the difference by the sound your chime makes. Mechanical chimes come equipped with a physical bell and make the standard “ding-dong” sound.

1. Is your chime compatible?

The usual culprit for connectivity problems between the Video Doorbell Pro and mechanical chimes is incompatibility.

The Video Doorbell Pro will only work with a compatible doorbell and a Ring transformer or adapter with the following specifications:

40VA max

16-24 VAC

50/60Hz (be sure not to purchase any garden lighting or halogen transformers)

You can visit the link here to discover whether your old chime is compatible with the Video Doorbell Pro. If it isn’t compatible, you have the option to purchase a compatible mechanical chime or a Ring chime.

2. Check the module installation

The Ring Pro Power Kit makes sure the Video Doorbell Pro gets enough power to run properly. The kit comes along with the Doorbell Pro. If there's a problem with the wiring or installation of the Power Kit, it can affect how your Ring doorbell controls the chime.

You can click on this link to figure out the correct procedure of installing (and wiring) the Pro Power Kit, or if you're not comfortable with attaching/detaching wires, you should consult an electrician.

3. Check the Ring app configuration

Another possible reason behind your chime malfunction could be disabled settings within the Ring smartphone app.

To turn the settings back to normal:

 1. Open the Ring app on your smartphone and access the “Settings” option.
 2. Once you're on the settings page, select the additional settings option marked “Device Settings.”
 3. From Device Settings, you need to choose the “General Settings” option and move on to the “Doorbell Chime Type” selection.
 4. Ensure that you choose “Mechanical” from the drop-down menu and that the “Ring My In-home Doorbell” option is on (push the slider to the right).
 5. Exit the app and try using the doorbell again to see if the problem is resolved.

Alternate Method:

Some users may find that their app is designed a little differently depending on their model. In this situation, you can access the “Settings” option from your Ring smartphone app and select the “Automatic Chime Detection” option.

Once the app picks up your doorbell chime, exit the app and try ringing the doorbell to ensure the chime is now operational.

4. Check Alexa doorbell configuration

If you've set your Amazon Alexa speakers to make an announcement when someone's at the door your mechanical chime may be facing difficulties due to interference from Amazon Alexa.

To resolve this problem, log in to your Alexa app, search from your doorbell in “Devices” and click on it. Once you're on the devices page, look for the “Doorbell Press Announcements” button and turn it off.

We're not entirely sure about the reason behind this interference; maybe the app needs an update. Whatever the case may be, switching off the announcements button generally takes care of the problem.

5. Check and reset power to the doorbell circuit

If none of the previous solutions have worked for you, you can try and reset the doorbell circuit's power. While this step may not always work, it's worth a try.

Forcing the doorbell to reboot can sometimes take care of whatever is causing the mechanical chime issue. Checking the circuit-breaker for a trip or a fault condition is also a good idea.

6. Double check hardware, installation and wiring

Before contacting Ring's support team, your last resort is to double-check all the hardware, installation procedure, and wiring. Sometimes, voltage is an issue behind your indoor doorbell not ringing correctly.

The Ring doorbell can draw power from the 16V AC power transformer that your mechanical chime utilizes. However, you can face difficulties when your indoor chime starts drawing too much power. You can solve this problem by installing the Pro Power Kit V2 to ensure your Ring doorbell receives sufficient power.

Or, you can try and replace your old transformer with a transformer with 16V AC and at least 30VA (40 VA max). Do not use a transformer meant for garden lights, halogens, or a DC power supply.

Option 2: If you have installed the Ring chime

This section focuses on troubleshooting solutions for users with a Ring doorbell and chime.

1. Wi-Fi connectivity issue between doorbell and wireless chime

Generally, installing a Ring doorbell with a Ring chime unit should take care of your issues.

But, if the problem persists even after you've installed a Ring chime unit, there may be a Wi-Fi connectivity issue between the doorbell and the chime.

Check the chime to see if there's a blue light flashing on the unit. If there is, that means the chime has lost connectivity. Simply reboot the chime unit to take care of this problem.

2. Power or battery issue

Another reason behind your Ring doorbell malfunctioning is insufficient battery life. Typically, the battery of your Ring device should last you months, and you'll receive notifications on your smartphone or email when the battery is starting to die.

However, the battery of your device can go out without any warnings in some cases. Your battery can also die out pretty fast if you leave the light of the doorbell lit for too long.

Trickle Charge

That may seem strange to you, considering the Ring doorbell is hardwired. However, the doorbell utilizes the wiring to trickle charge the rechargeable batteries within the doorbell. The doorbell itself runs on battery power.

Your doorbell's battery dying out may be related to a fault within the battery itself, in which case you'll have to replace them. Another explanation is that your doorbell may not be receiving enough power, in which case you might have to check your wiring or replace your transformer with one that has at least 16V AC, 30VA (40 VA max), and 50/60Hz.

3. App configuration is set to mute/chime snooze

Your Ring doorbell may not be ringing because the proper settings on the app have been disabled.

To fix this problem, open the Ring app on your smartphone and select the “Settings” option. Next, tap the “Doorbell Kit Setting” and enable the “Ring my in-home doorbell” option.

4. Chime volume may be set very low

Another possible cause behind you not being able to hear the doorbell ringing is that you've set the chime volume too low. You can take care of this problem by accessing the chime's device settings via the app and setting the volume a little higher.

5. Restart Ring doorbell and chime

You can also try restarting your devices to fix the problem of your doorbell not ringing. Unplug the power cord of your chime to restart the device.

For the doorbell, you can either press and hold the button placed on the side of the unit for 30 seconds. If that's not an option, you can also cut the unit's power by turning the breaker off, waiting at least 30 seconds, and turning it back on.

6. Reset Ring doorbell and chime

To reset your Ring Video Doorbell (first generation), locate the orange button on the unit, press and hold it for 20 seconds. If the reset is successful, you'll see the unit's front lights flash a few times.

Give the doorbell a few minutes to complete the reset process. Next, you'll have to set the doorbell to setup mode by pressing the orange button once more, and that's it.

If you own another Ring doorbell model, you can discover how to reset your unit by clicking here.

The Verdict

If your Ring doorbell is not ringing the way it should, seek out troubleshooting instructions based on whether your doorbell works with a mechanical chime or a Ring chime.

We advise you to do this because the solutions to your problem may differ based on whether you've got a Ring chime or not.

Additionally, if your doorbell doesn't work even after you've tried the relevant instructions, it's best to get in touch with Ring's support team to help you find a viable solution.

The post Solved: Ring Doorbell Flashing Blue appeared first on Smart Home Perfected.

]]>

The luminous circle on your Ring video doorbell acts as a signifier of its present working state. The existing condition of the doorbell is signified by different colors and patterns it displays.

There are no less than 8 situations when your Ring doorbell has a blue light (and another 8 where it has a white light)!

For example, if it’s flashing blue, it indicates the device is booting up after a restart. Whereas, if only a section of the circular light is flashing blue, that indicates a Wi-Fi issue.

From blinking blue, solid blue, differences in blinking speed and the percentage of the circle illuminated it’s easy to be confused.

In this article, I dive into what each light color and indicator represents and how to fix it.

Why is My Ring Doorbell Flashing Blue?

As I mentioned, there can be several reasons why your Ring video doorbell's light is flashing Blue. Depending on the situation, it could either be nothing to worry about, or indicate a serious issue.

So, it's important to take note of the model you have and the flashing light pattern before attempting to troubleshoot.

Ring App 1

How to Identify My Ring Video Doorbell Model?

You can check the product documentation or packaging to figure this out. Additionally, you can also use the Ring app. Here’s how:

 1. Open the Ring mobile app.
 2. Then, tap on the menu button (≡)at the top left.
 3. Tap on “Devices”
 4. If multiple devices show up, pick one that looks like the video doorbell on your front door.
 5. Tap on “Device Health.”
 6. Here, you can find the “Product Name” under the “Device Details” section.

Ring Doorbell Light Indicators and What They Mean

Almost all Ring doorbells follow the same patterns to communicate a specific error. However, there are some differences based on how the device is powered and if there have been any recent network changes.

Here's what each different light pattern indicates:

Blue Indicators

 • Blue Lights Spinning: Normal Reaction to Doorbell Button Presses
 • Blue Light Moving Up: Connecting to a Previously Connected Wi-Fi Network
 • Blue Light Flashing On and Off: The doorbell is booting up.
 • Solid Blue Light: The speaker is enabled on the doorbell
 • Flashing Blue Light Upper Half Only: Wrong Wi-Fi password (Pro 1 and Pro 2 only)
 • Sections of Blue Light Flashing and Filling up the Screen: Indicating the percentage of charge (1st generations)

Mixture of Blue and White Indicators

 • Flashing Four Times Followed by a White Spin and Blue Upward Transition: Indicating a successful setup
 • Short Bursts of Blue Followed by a Spinning White Light: The doorbell is performing a factory reset

White Indicators

 • White Lights Spinning: Connecting to a Wi-Fi network for the first time.
 • White Light Flashing On and Off: Carrying out a firmware update
 • Flashing White Upper Half Only: Failed setup because of wrong Wi-Fi password
 • Flashing White Right Half Only: Failed setup because of router/signal strength issue
 • Flashing White Left Half Only: Failed setup due to an unknown reason
 • Solid White Light: Indicating an idle doorbell (Elite Only)

Red Indicators

 • Flashing Red Bottom Half Only: Low voltage or not enough power (Pro 1 and Pro 2 only)
How to Reset a Ring Doorbell

After you identify the flashing pattern, the next step is to troubleshoot the issue.

How to fix the Flashing Blue Light on a Ring Doorbell

Scenario 1. Sections of Blue Light Flashing in a Circular Pattern

This fix is specific to 1st generations of Ring Doorbells.

The flashing blue circle on 1st gen doorbells usually means the device is charging. Once fully charged, the circle should stop flashing.

So if the flashing blue light doesn't go away it usually points to a charging issue.

1st gen doorbells can operate fully on battery power and be manually charged or they can be trickle charged via the doorbell circuit.

Unlike later models, the 1st gen Ring Doorbell's battery isn't easily replaceable. If the battery is completely flat and the device doesn't charge, you unfortunately might need to replace the entire unit.

Other than a flat battery, faulty wiring could also be a culprit, if the doorbell is hardwired. In this case you'll need isolate the circuit and make sure the wires are in full contact with the doorbell to complete the circuit. If you're unsure of this, then I suggest getting in touch with a professional electrician.

Scenario 2. Frantically Blinking Blue, Then White

Like any smart device, a Ring doorbell can sometimes go into reset mode. This could be triggered by a user, or during firmware updates.

If the circular LED light of your Ring Doorbell is blinking blue in short, rapid bursts for a few seconds, followed by a white spinning circle, it means that a factory reset is happening.

There's no need to worry, as it shows that your Ring doorbell is finalizing the reset process.

If after an extended period of time the device keeps blinking blue with a spinning white light, then it's possible the reset encountered an error. This could be down to a bad firmware update, a drop in power at the wrong time, or some other internal glitch.

Power Cycle

In this case, I recommend waiting a while to see if it can right itself and if not try to power cycle the device which can help resolve minor glitches.

To power cycle, you remove the battery from the device (for models with a removable battery) and for hardwired devices, then you can turn off the doorbell circuit from the main breaker board. After a couple of minutes, power it back up to see if that resolves the problem.

Wi Fi Router 2

Scenario 3. Blue Light Sweeping Upwards

This pattern shows up when the Ring doorbell is trying to reconnect to a known Wi-Fi network.

Usually, you don't have to do anything. The Doorbell will connect to the Wi-Fi network, and the flashing pattern will die down.

However, if it doesn't go away after a minute or so, there might be signal issues or a lack of internet access. To resolve this:

 1. First, log in to the Wi-Fi networking using a smart device and perform a quick speed test. If the speed is low (say 2Mbps), there might be an issue with your ISP,
 2. You may also have too many devices connected to the network. Try disconnecting unnecessary devices and make sure other devices are not consuming a lot of data (such as large downloads or updates).
 3. After that, check the speed again. If it improves, see if the indicator light dies down.
 4. You can also check this by logging into the Ring doorbell on the Ring app and checking the live view.
 5. If the live view shows up instantly and doesn't buffer or look blurry, the network error might be resolved.
Ring App

Check Wi-Fi Signal Strength Using the Ring App

Additionally, you can confirm the device has enough Wi-Fi signal by checking the RSSI (signal strength) from the “Device Health” tile. Here's how:

 1. Open the Ring app and select your doorbell (Menu icon ☰ –> Devices).
 2. Then, from the device dashboard, tap on “Device Health.”
 3. Here, scroll down until you get to signal strength.
 4. Make sure it's displaying a green value and that it's not too high (closer to zero, the better).
 5. If the signal is displayed in red or amber (with a value such as -40 to -100), you might have to improve the signal strength. To learn how to do so, check out this article.

How to fix other Indicator Lights on a Ring Doorbell

Scenario 1. White Light Flashing

Typically, the white light will start flashing on a Ring doorbell when it's trying to update its firmware.

 • When this happens, you must ensure the device has a strong and stable internet connection.
 • So disconnect unnecessary devices, and check the Ring app for any important notifications.
 • The Ring app will let you know if there's a firmware update or whether it needs fresh batteries to continue the update.
 • The firmware update should take around 5 minutes or so. However, if it takes longer than that, you must check your Wi-Fi connection and ensure the signal is strong.

That said, if the white light keeps flashing forever, you can try restarting/resetting the device.

Wi Fi signal Range 1 1

Scenario 2. Upper Half Flashing White

The upper half of the ring indicator will start flashing white when you've entered the wrong Wi-Fi password. It occurs during the initial setup, and you can reconnect by typing in the correct one.

If you don't know how, there are several ways you can find your Wi-Fi password:

 • Printed on the back of the router (that is, if it's running on the default settings)
 • Through the network settings on your PC or Mac
 • Through your Android smartphone or iPhone
 • Through the router settings (if you can log in to it first)

After you find the correct password, you can try logging in via the Ring app. The flashing lights will change to a sweeping upwards pattern (in blue or white, depending on the model) when the password is correct.

Scenario 3. Left or Right Halves Flashing White

The left or right halves of the Ring indicator can also start to flash during the network setup process. However, it's not due to a wrong password and could be due to several others reasons. These could be:

 • Wi-Fi network can't connect to the internet
 • The router has blocked the Ring doorbell
 • Ring doorbell is incompatible with the network settings of the router
 • Ring doorbell doesn't have a strong signal range

This is also related to network issues, so ensure your Wi-Fi network has internet access and a strong signal.

Ring Video Doorbell Press

Scenario 4. Bottom Half Flashing Red

When this happens, it implies that the Ring doorbell is running into a power issue. It might be low batteries or low voltage on the doorbell transformer terminals.

So, try recharging the device or checking the connections of the transformer terminals. You can also check the terminal voltage and battery level through the “Device Health” tile in the Ring app.

If there's an issue with the doorbell transformer or the internal battery, I recommend getting help from a professional.

Scenario 5. LEDs Spinning White During Setup

To make this indicator light go away, you must complete the setup process. Here's how:

 1. Download and open the Ring app on your smartphone.
 2. Then, create an account or log in.
 3. After that, you'll be greeted by the home screen on the Ring app. Here, tap on the hamburger menu icon (☰).
 4. Then, from the side list, tap on “Set Up a New Device.”
 5. Choose “Doorbells” and allow the Ring app to scan for the QR code in the doorbell. You can also find the QR code on its user manual or packaging.
 6. Then, follow the prompts in the app to set up your location, device name, and other installation instructions. Also, keep your Wi-Fi password ready. I recommend writing it down so you can type it into the app correctly.
 7. After that, keep following the instructions in the app to connect to your device. You need to keep your smart device closer to the Ring doorbell for it to link up.
 8. Then, select your Wi-Fi network and type in the password. Make sure the password is correct.
 9. The indicator light will show a sweeping-up effect in either blue or white to indicate a successful Wi-Fi connection. However, if you type in the wrong password, the upper half of the indicator ring will start flashing.
 10. Keep completing the prompts in the app to finish the setup. The indicator lights will start to blink rapidly four times and then do a sweep-up pattern (in white or blue) to indicate that the initial setup was a success.

Verdict

The indicator light on your Ring doorbell will use various flashing patterns and colors to signal its current status.

Usually, these will be network issues, power failures, and other situations that aren’t necessarily cause for concern.

So check the list above to understand what each pattern means and how to approach it if there’s any issue.

Should you get an “Activating Device” notification from your doorbell's motion sensor or ring, yet find it impossible to access the related video, this guide has been specifically tailored to help you address this problem.

Don’t worry; this issue is quite common, particularly for first-time users. We provide 14 steps for you to diagnose and fix the problem. Let’s begin!

1. Bad signal between your phone and your mobile network, or restricted phone data plan

When you are away from home, the Ring app is your main point of connection to your Ring doorbell device. You can control the smart doorbell from any device (mobile phone or personal computer) that supports the Ring app.

To successfully use the Live View option via the app, you need a stable internet or Wi-Fi connection. Your internet connection should be the first thing you check when you have issues with the Ring app. Although video streaming requires less bandwidth, it needs a strong connection.

2. Poor Wi-Fi signal between your Ring doorbell and home router

Another reason your Ring doorbell Live View feature is not activating may be a weak connection between your router and smart doorbell device. This might even remain an issue after you’ve connected to a good internet connection.

If the signal strength between your router and Ring doorbell is bad, the Ring device will find it difficult to transfer real-time video files to your Ring app. To access the signal strength, follow the steps below:

 1. Open and login to your Ring app.
 2. Click on the three parallel lines on the upper left of your mobile screen. Click on the particular Ring device you want to troubleshoot (given that you have multiple smart doorbell devices). Click on the “Device Health” option. You will see your signal strength under the “Network” section on the Device Health screen.
 3. Choose “Devices.”
 4. Click on the particular Ring device you want to troubleshoot (given that you have multiple smart doorbell devices).
 5. Click on the “Device Health” option.
 6. You will see your signal strength under the “Network” section on the Device Health screen.

Note: if the signal strength is poor, you may want to reconsider the distance between the router and the Ring device (as distance plays a major role in signal strength). The closer the two devices, the stronger the signal strength and vice versa. Apart from the distance, the layout of the home or interfering objects can break the signal. Ensure your home layout supports a strong connection between the two devices.

3. Low internet upload/download speeds (on your home router)

You can stream footage from your front door anywhere because the Ring device is uploading the video data to a cloud system where your app can download the data. The speed of the process makes it seamless and unnoticeable. However, if the internet speed is slow, the data transmission is affected, hence the Ring app will be unable to download the image from your Ring device camera.

You can test the internet speed by following the process below:

 1. Take your mobile device closer to the spot where your Ring device is installed.
 2. Type “ring.com/speed” on a web browser on your mobile device.
 3. Tap the “Start” button in the central part of the gauge to initiate the speed test.

Once the test is completed, the test results will be displayed in the small table under the gauge. The green number and blue number represent the download speed and upload speed, respectively.

If the test results for the upload and download speeds are greater or equal to 2 Mbps, the Ring device should function properly. Like we’ve mentioned before, move the router closer to the Ring device in case the results are lower than 2 Mbps.

4. Switch to the lightweight Rapid Ring App

The Rapid Ring App is a companion app (used with the Ring app). It is optimized to increase the speed of communication between your Ring device and app. It allows you to stay up to date, initiates Live View, and communicates with your visitors. Although it is regarded as the “light version” of the Ring app, it cannot work without the original Ring app.

5. Check battery of Ring doorbell, or check power supply if hardwired

If your Ring Doorbell Live View is not activating then check if the Ring doorbell battery is low. Ensure the smart doorbell battery is properly charged. Ring doorbells can work with your home power supply and battery. The Ring doorbell uses a lithium polymer battery, which should last from six to twelve months before recharging. High activity and low temperature can drain the battery faster.

To check the battery percentage, follow the steps in the second troubleshooting method. The device health test reveals the battery percent, router signal strength, as well as other diagnostics.

Ring Doorbell Live View is not activating

6. Wi-Fi contention

Wi-Fi contention refers to the number of devices competing with the Ring doorbell for the internet connection. The result of the speed test won’t matter if there are several devices competing heavily with the Ring device. The best bet is to reduce the load on the Wi-Fi router, and try again.

7. Double-check Ring doorbell settings

Double-check the Ring doorbell settings to see if you have disabled the Live View feature or motion sensor recording. Restoring the Ring doorbell to factory settings can help undo the previous references (that could explain the Ring Doorbell Live View not activating).

8. Try switching from 2.4GHz to 5GHz

Ring devices can function with 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz. However, you can switch the current frequency to see if it would help. You may need to create another SSID for your smart doorbell in order to connect to the 5 Hz frequency.

9. Upgrade router or install Wi-Fi repeaters or Chime Pro which acts as a repeater

If you are using previous router versions, you may want to upgrade the router for maximum performance. To further enhance the efficiency of your router, get and install Wi-Fi repeaters. A Wi-Fi repeater, aka Wi-Fi extender, increases the coverage area of your Wi-Fi network and eliminates the connection difficulties faced due to router distance from the Ring app.

10. Disable VPNs if enabled on phone or router

Some VPN apps limit the users’ bandwidth and reduce the pace of internet connection in a bid to encrypt your traffic. The existence of such VPN programs can reduce the downloading speed of the mobile Ring app or the uploading speed of the Ring doorbell device.

11. Slow phone with lots of apps or Bluetooth enabled

Mobile apps are to the phone as contending devices are to the router, hence you are advised to reduce/disable the activities of such applications when using a Ring app. Some phones have the processing ability and required space to handle multiple program functions alongside the Live View feature while others aren’t built for such.

12. Ensure your phone’s OS is up to date and compatible with the Ring app

The OS (operating system) of your devices parents other devices; hence the Ring app cannot function well if it is not compatible with the device’s OS. Ring announced on April 10th, 2018 that the Ring app will cease to work on Windows mobile devices. However, the app is still operational on Windows desktops, tablets, and laptops. The Ring app is free on Android OS and iOS.

13. Update firmware of your Ring doorbell

Updating the firmware of your Ring doorbell automatically improves its performance by eliminating bugs and adding new features from the app provider. Follow the steps below to update the firmware of your Ring doorbell.

 1. Open the Ring app.
 2. Choose “Device Health.”
 3. Check “Firmware” under the device details.
 4. If it displays “Up-to-date,” there’s no need to update it.
 5. If it displays a number, it means your firmware is due for an update. The device will automatically update itself when a new event comes up (Live View, Ring, or Motion).

14. Restart router & Ring doorbell

Sometimes, the solution to a device error is a simple restart. Never underestimate the power of the restart button. You can restart your Ring doorbell by following the steps below:

 1. Press and hold the orange button for about 20 seconds.
 2. Then, release.
 3. On release, the front light will blink a few times, meaning that the restart process has commenced.

The process should be complete in about 60 seconds.

Unfortunately, should you find the initial screwdriver from your Ring doorbell kit is no longer available and you necessitate a battery replacement, changes to the Wi-Fi setup, or a device relocation, kindly proceed with the following information!

The Ring doorbell uses tamper-proof security screws, which is why it can be tricky to find the correct screwdriver.

If you intend on using a standard Torx screwdriver, it may not work. Furthermore, many third-party screwdrivers claim to be compatible with Ring doorbells, but in reality, they are not.

We’ve provided links to replacements below to get your Ring doorbell back up and running!

What type of screw is used?

Are you wondering what type of screw is used with Ring doorbells? Well, they are referred to as “tamper roof screws.” They also go by the name “tamper proof star” and “tamper proof Torx.” This particular screwdriver has a hole in its tip head that allows the pinhead on the screw to be inserted into the screwdriver.

Different Ring models use different variations of these tamper proof screws, which is why it’s best to get the correct replacement directly from Ring.

Why is it so difficult to find a compatible screwdriver?

Despite knowing what type of screwdriver you need for a Ring doorbell, you might find it hard to come across it in a store. But why is it so hard to find? Well, it was a design decision by Ring.

In the last few years, a lot of Ring doorbells were being tampered with. And in many of those cases, thieves were able to loosen the screws and steal the device. To prevent this from happening, Ring started using security screws.

Compatible Ring Doorbell Screwdrivers

Below are links to the correct screwdrivers to open your Ring doorbell. The cost of these replacements is only $2 and compared to third party alternatives, these will definitely work!

Every Ring doorbell comes with a cover. If you want to replace it with another color, you will need to take it off. Furthermore, battery-powered Ring doorbells are secured under the faceplate. So, if the batteries drain out, you will need to take off the faceplate to replace the batteries.

 1. Turn over your Ring doorbell. You will see the security screws at the bottom. Unscrew them.
 2. Place your finger on the surface, and gently push from the bottom.
 3. Using your thumb, keep the pressure until the plate comes off.
 4. Once it is loose, place your hand on top of the faceplate and gently pull it off.
 5. Now change the batteries, or if you want to insert a new faceplate, take it in your hands.
 6. Line up the faceplate with the body of the Ring doorbell.
 7. Press it downwards until you hear a click.
 8. Now take the security screws and tighten them.
 9. Go slow, and tighten each screw all the way.
 10. Congratulations, the faceplate is changed.

How to reconnect the Ring doorbell to Wi-Fi

Ring smart doorbells can notify users about important alerts via the internet. Moreover, you can stream live footage from your Ring doorbell using the app.

For these features to function properly, you will need a stable internet connection. If your Ring doorbell was disconnected from your Wi-Fi, here is how you can reconnect it.

 1. Take out your phone and launch the Ring app.
 2. Tap on the burger menu on the top left.
 3. From the left side of the screen, look for the option “Devices.”
 4. Once you find it, tap on it.
 5. Select the device that is disconnected and needs to be reconnected to the Wi-Fi network.
 6. Select “Device Health” on the bottom of the screen.
 7. From there, select “Reconnect to Wi-Fi” or hit “Change Wi-Fi Network” and follow the instructions
 8. Your Ring doorbell should now be reconnected to the Wi-Fi.

How to move your Ring doorbell to another location?

Have you been using a Ring smart doorbell for your home, and now you have to relocate it? The idea of it might appear daunting, but the process is straightforward and pretty simple.

The process below applies to locations that you have already added to your Ring app. To let the Ring app manually add suitable locations around your home or office, launch the app, navigate to settings, tap on “Detect Locations,” and approve detected locations.

Now let’s get right into how you can relocate your Ring doorbell. This process applies to both switching to a new home and relocating the device in your existing home.

 1. Launch the Ring app on your phone and tap on the burger menu from the top left.
 2. Tap on “Devices.”
 3. From the new window, select the Ring doorbell you want to relocate.
 4. Open the “Device Settings” feature.
 5. Navigate to “General Settings.”
 6. Tap on “Locations.”

The device is engineered to function for a period of 6 to 12 months on a single charge, assuming ideal conditions. However, certain circumstances can considerably reduce the anticipated battery life.

Environment

Generally speaking, lithium-ion batteries have reduced capacity in low temperatures. Nonetheless, heat can shorten the Ring doorbell battery life, as well.

Activity

There are a lot of features wrapped up in a video doorbell which can use up a lot of energy. Motion detection, prolonged live streaming, leaving the night light on during the day can all drain the battery.

Weak Wi-Fi

Due to a weak Wi-Fi signal, your Ring doorbell tends to automatically increase its transmission power so that it increases the Wi-Fi broadbase. As such, the doorbell battery will be drained sooner. The Ring Chime pro can help with this as it acts as a Wi-Fi extender.

How can I improve the Ring Doorbell battery life?

Below are some ways you can improve your Ring doorbell battery life:

 • You can bypass the problem of low Ring doorbell battery life by hardwiring the device into an electrical circuit in the house. (Similar to traditional doorbells)
 • Prolonged live streaming of video footage from your doorbell uses up a lot of energy and it's best to limit its use for when it's needed.
 • Motion detection can be adjusted to help reduce battery drainage. This way, passing cars don’t trigger motion detection.
 • Extremely cold or hot temperatures should be avoided as they affect the battery’s performance, too.
 • The Wi-Fi signal strength needs to be monitored so that the optimal level of signal is obtained, helping the doorbell run more efficiently. In this scenario it’s worth considering installing a Wi-Fi booster or the Ring Chime Pro to increase signal.
 • The battery only needs to be recharged when it’s low. Charging it when full decreases the Ring doorbell battery life.
 • The nightlight should be switched off at daytime, as it tends to drain the battery too.
 • High currents and high charges should be avoided while charging. At the same time, very low discharges that are below 2 or 2.5 volts should be prevented. It is best to use the charger that comes out of the box.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I recharge my Ring Doorbell?

Your Ring doorbell battery needs to be recharged every few months, depending on how fast it drains.

To recharge, loosen the doorbell’s base screw and lift off the faceplate. After, press the release tab and remove the battery. Connect a USB charger to the battery’s charging port and leave to charge. Once the battery light has turned green, it will be full and ready to go.

When putting the battery back, slide it into the doorbell until you hear a click. Wait 30 seconds and put back the faceplate. Last, tighten the security screw and you’re done.

How long does it take to recharge?

The Ring doorbell takes around 4 to 5 hours to fully charge if you connect it with a compatible AC USB adapter.

You can also charge it using your PC, however it may take slightly longer to charge with a lower voltage.

If the battery dies totally, you may have to go through the setup process in the app.

How to check the battery levels of my Ring Doorbell?

The Ring apps send multiple alerts as push up notifications to your phone, PC, or tablet, to let you know about the battery level.

How do I know it is fully charged and ready to go?

The light on the front indicates the charging percentage. When this light is green, it means the battery is fully charged and ready to go.

I recharged my Ring Doorbell but it still says its low power … what do I do?

There is no need to worry if the app shows a low battery sign. The Ring app updates the battery percentage after every ring. So, it updates the battery on the app the next time the ring button is pressed.

How to replace the battery on my Ring Doorbell?

Remove the existing battery from the mounting bracket by loosening the two secure screws at the bottom. Use a star-shaped screwdriver.

After, slide the battery up and off the mounting bracket. Put a new battery on the mounting bracket and tighten the security screws to lock the new battery in place.

Many people using Ring doorbells have encountered the issue of the external doorbell sound. The doorbell makes a noise to the visitors after it’s been pressed. The question is – can you do anything about that?

As of now, you can’t do anything to change the external Ring doorbell sound. It is built into the device without the possibility to switch it for a different, more pleasant sound. One thing you can do, however, is turn the volume down so the sound doesn’t startle your visitors, or turn it off completely! From there, you can create your own makeshift external doorbell chime.

 1. To turn off the external doorbell sound, open your Ring app.
 2. Go to “Device Settings.”
 3. Go to “General Settings.”
 4. Here, you can choose to drag the volume all the way down to 0, so the doorbell doesn’t make an external sound at all, or simply lower it.

Chime Pro vs Chime

Ring Chime and Ring Chime Pro are two different doorbell models from the same brand. Ring Chime Pro is a more advanced model, offering Wi-Fi coverage for Ring devices and boasting dual-band 2.4GHz & 5GHz. Just for comparison, Ring Chime only has 2.4GHz Wi-Fi connectivity.

In addition to that, Ring Chime Pro has a night light built into the body of the device. The product comes with a guide, which is not only helpful during setup, but also gives valuable advice for choosing the right place for your Ring Chime Pro. If you are looking for a more advanced and easy-to-use model, you should definitely aim for Ring Chime Pro.

At the same time, Ring Chime doesn’t lag far behind. Both devices are easy to install. You can control both through your Ring Chime app on your mobile device. Naturally, both devices have the same ringtone choices, as they’re both connected to the same app.

The bottom line is, both devices are good. If you need a stronger Wi-Fi connection for your Ring devices then Ring Chime Pro is the obvious option. The built-in night light really seals the deal for many customers; it’s a nice touch. Both devices will do their job of playing a tune if someone rings the doorbell or there is motion detected.

Here is a step-by-step guide to troubleshoot your Ring doorbell motion detection.

The post Solved: 5 Effective Solutions for Ring Doorbell Not Detecting Motion appeared first on Smart Home Perfected.

]]>

Sometimes, you may encounter issues with the motion detection function of your Ring doorbell. These issues could range from getting too many unneeded alerts to a total malfunction in sensing movement.

Some of the common reasons a Ring doorbell is not picking up motion include a poor mounting position, incorrect motion settings in the app, or problems with the app version.

In this article, I walk through 16 troubleshooting steps to help you get your doorbell to respond to motion again.

Let's begin!

How Ring Doorbell Motion Detection Works

Before we start, it’s important to understand how Ring video doorbells register motion.

Ring video doorbells use two different technologies to detect motion depending on the time of day.

Passive Infrared Sensors

Primarily, Ring video doorbells use passive infrared sensors (PIR) to detect motion.

These are essentially heat sensors that monitor the heat changes within the doorbell’s capture zone.

However, during the day it can start to produce false positives because of sunlight, windows, cars, and even the wind.

Advanced Motion Detection

To minimize this, it combines with another feature called “Advanced Motion Detection.”

This feature includes object detection algorithms to scan the shapes (or pixels) of the video feed and recognize humans and other objects (such as packages and vehicles).

With advanced motion detection turned on, the video doorbell has a lower chance of registering false alarms, minimizing unnecessary alerts sent your way.

Also, in the case of the Ring Video Doorbell Pro 2, it adds radar technology to determine the exact distance motion activity is going on in front of your camera.

Ring App 1

Troubleshooting Steps for Ring Doorbell Not Detecting Motion

A Ring video doorbell can detect motion between 5 to 30 feet of the camera. Additionally, there are various motion settings you can customize such as the eligible motion zones, sensitivity, motion detecting frequency, and how motion alerts are sent to your phone.

If any of these settings are not properly configured, your Ring doorbell won't detect motion correctly or send you a proper notification.

So in the guide below, I'll show you step-by-step instructions on how to check for these settings and troubleshoot motion detection on your Ring video doorbell.

Step 1: Double-check if Motion Alerts are Enabled in the Ring App

According to Ring, the main cause of a Ring doorbell failing to detect motion is often because a user has disabled Motion Alerts in the Ring app.

Surprisingly, this applies to 90% of all cases and is especially common with new users.

So to enable this setting simply open the Ring app and select your camera, you'll then need to enable “Motion Alerts” and “Ring Alerts” on the camera's home screen. (Make sure both options are switched to the blue “on”).

Step 2: Test Your Camera to See if it Can Detect Motion

If motion notifications are enabled in the Ring app and the doorbell isn’t detecting motion, you may want to test whether the camera detects any movement.

Ideally, when there is movement inside any of your camera’s motion detection zones, the camera should send push notifications to your phone, allowing you to see who is at the door.

You can test your Ring doorbell’s motion detection capabilities by simply walking in front of its field of view and keeping your smartphone on hand.

This helps you trigger motion while also checking whether the Ring video doorbell detects motion instantly and sends you an accurate and instant alert.

If your camera doesn't detect your presence, even when you're moving within the assigned motion zones, the motion detection settings on your Ring doorbell will need to be readjusted.

Glare

Step 3: If the Camera is Behind Glass or Reflective Surfaces Reposition It

The Ring doorbell works by using Passive Infrared (PIR) to detect the amount of heat emitted by the object causing motion or light changes.

You can customize the sensitivity of the camera by filtering the amount of heat it detects. However, the PIR sensors won't work properly if there are any obstacles in front of your camera.

So make sure the camera is installed without any obstructions. It should have a clear line of sight to your front yard without glass panes, hardware cloth, grilles, or other objects getting close up in its camera lens.

Also, to get proper motion detection, it’s best to reposition the camera away from direct sunlight or front-facing windows, glass doors, or other shiny surfaces (say, a car that’s parked right in front).

This tends to reflect too much heat into the camera, throwing off its accuracy in detecting motion through heat changes.

Ring Doorbell Press
Make sure your Ring doorbell has an unobstructed view of your front porch

Step 4: Set Motion Frequency to “Frequent” and Retest

Ring doorbells can have a considerable amount of delay when you adjust the motion detection frequency to “Regularly” or “Periodically,” going so far as a 30-minute delay where it just shuts down the motion sensors and doesn’t react to the environment.

Although decreasing the frequency does have its uses, you can try setting the motion detection frequency to “Frequent” so it’s always scanning for motion without any set delays.

To do this:

 1. Open the Ring app on your Android or iOS device and tap select our video doorbell.
 2. Then, from the device's dashboard, select “Motion Settings” and then head over to “Advanced Settings.”
 3. There are three options. From here, select “Frequent.”
 4. Then, confirm your changes and save the new settings.
 5. Finally, retest your camera again (similar to step 2) and see if it’ll give you any motion alerts.
People Detection

Step 5: Disable People Only Mode in the Ring App's Smart Alerts Section

The “People Only Mode” in the Ring app is a setting designed to prevent your doorbell from bombarding you with motion notifications from non-human triggers—like swaying trees or a passing car.

Although incredibly useful, it’s not perfect by any means. Sometimes it might halt almost all motion alerts, even when there's actual movement.

Depending on your doorbell model and software version, you can find the toggle for “People Only Mode” in the “Motion Settings” or “Smart Alerts” submenus.

So try disabling it and checking the camera's motion detection capabilities again. If it detects your motion and sends you an alert to your smartphone, you can be sure that this feature is unnecessary and needs to stay off.

This feature is available to Ring Protect subscribers only.

Step 6: Review Your Motion Sensitivity Settings

When you set the motion sensitivity of your Ring doorbell too low, it can't pick up on distant or subtle movements.

So, even if it's angled in the proper direction, package deliveries or vehicles might not trigger an alert.

 1. To re-adjust your motion sensitivity settings, head over to the Ring app, select your doorbell, and go to “Motion Settings.”
 2. From here, you can find the option to customize the “Motion Sensitivity.” Once you've stepped into this menu, you'll find a motion sensitivity slider.
 3. Try shifting the slider more towards the right, saving your changes, and trying to trigger the motion detection of your Ring doorbell.
Ring App

Step 7: Double Check Your Motion Zones and Retest

It doesn't matter if you've tweaked your Ring doorbell’s motion zones before, it won't hurt to redefine them now.

You can adjust the motion zones in the Ring app. Here’s how:

 1. First, open the Ring app and select your Ring doorbell (using the hamburger menu on the top left)
 2. After that, you’ll be greeted by the device dashboard. Tap on “Motion Settings”
 3. Depending on the model and software version, you’ll have an option to “Edit Zones” at the top of the list or an option called “Camera Motion Zones” after scrolling down. Tap into this option.
 4. A screenshot of your doorbell camera feed will pop up, highlighted with the zones you’ve already set up. Here, you can start to adjust zones or add new ones.
 5. To adjust an existing zone, simply tap on it and drag the circle points on its edges to adjust accordingly. You can then tap on “Save” to confirm your changes.
 6. You can also add a new motion zone by tapping on “Add Zone.”

If you have a battery-powered video doorbell, Ring recommends you enable Advanced Motion Settings through the “Advanced Settings” menu in the camera’s dashboard.

Extra Tips on Setting up Accurate Motion Detection Zones

When setting up motion zones, make sure to keep the following in mind:

 • Prioritize driveways and pathways that lead directly to your home and your property line.
 • Don’t set your motion zones on the main road or sidewalks as it might trigger incessantly because of passersby.
 • Try to cover your front porch, lawn, or immediate area in front of your video doorbell as much as possible, without getting into your neighbor's territory or the sidewalk.
 • Try to minimize objects or angle the video doorbell so it’s got a clear view. You can cut back tree branches, move away unnecessary decorations, etc.
 • Best to exclude areas such as walls, hedges, and open sky to minimize false positives.

For Ring Video Doorbell Pro 2 Users: Reconfigure the 3D Motion Detection/Bird's Eye Zones

With the 3D motion detection feature, it's possible to pinpoint the exact distance where motion is detected from the video doorbell.

However, if the motion zones for bird's eye view are configured improperly or set to a distance that's too close, it might prevent the video doorbell from detecting motion accurately.

Set up Bird’s Eye Zones

Here’s how you can set up Bird’s Eye Zones via the Ring app

 1. Open the Ring app and click on the menu icon at the top left corner. It's the hamburger menu with three horizontal lines.
 2. Tap on ‘Devices.'
 3. Pick your doorbell from the list.
 4. Go into ‘Motion Settings.'
 5. Choose ‘Set up Zones' on the map or the Bird's Eye Zones option below it.
 6. Follow prompts for ‘Set up Feature’.
 7. Specify the exact location of your doorbell camera installation.
 8. Position your doorbell icon accurately by dragging it into place.
 9. Use the split screen to align the camera view with the device's direction by sliding left or right.
 10. Customize your zones by hitting ‘Set up Zones'.
 11. Tap on ‘Add Zone.'
 12. Resize and move it as needed, then name it before hitting ‘Done'.
 13. Repeat the zone setup process for other zones. (You can set up to three.)
 14. Save your zones by hitting ‘Continue'.
 15. Make sure to test the zones by moving around the edge of your motion-detection area. Adjust the range as needed.

However, please note that the weather, obstacles, Wi-Fi connection, and reflections can affect radar functionality.

Edit or Delete Existing Zones

Modifying already set zones follows a similar path.

 1. Open the Ring app
 2. Select your device
 3. Head to “Motion Settings”
 4. Tap on Edit Zones
 5. Then adjust your bird’s eye zones by dragging the circles around its edges.
 6. Tap on “Done” and then “Save” to confirm changes.

If you want to troubleshoot motion detection settings even further, you can also disable the Bird’s Eye Zones and retest motion.

To disable Bird’s Eye Zones:

 1. Open the Ring app and select your doorbell
 2. From the device dashboard head to Motion Settings > Bird’s Eye Zones
 3. Then, toggle the button on the left to disable them.

However, do keep in mind that radar detection stays on, even when Bird's Eye Zones are off.

So, motion notifications still come in from up to 30 feet away, based on the motion zones set up according to the camera’s FOV.

Step 8: Check the Camera Mount and Angle

Sometimes, if you have several steps leading to your main door, the Ring doorbell may not pick up activity happening right outside your door.

So you’ll need to adjust the mounting angle appropriately.

The idea is to tilt the camera a little downwards. Depending on your model, you can do this by setting up additional wedge/corner kits to the mounting surface of your Ring doorbell.

These kits help you tilt the camera downwards or rotate it to the left or right in 15,30, and 45-degree increments.

Step 9: Confirm Whether Motion Schedules are Disabled

The Ring app has a great feature that allows you to disable motion alerts on a specific day and time. This feature comes in very handy, especially when you’ll be doing something right outside your door or during high-traffic hours.

However, it might be turned on indefinitely, so check the motion settings on your Ring app to confirm there is no Motion Schedule enabled. If one is enabled, disable the schedule and retest your camera.

Wi Fi Router 2

Step 10: Verify the Wi-Fi Connection to Your Ring Doorbell

The Ring doorbell works by connecting to your home Wi-Fi network, which allows it to communicate remotely with your smart device.

If there is no Wi-Fi or the signal strength is poor, the doorbell won’t work or it might cause delays.

Fortunately, the Ring app includes a way to check your Wi-Fi signal’s strength.

This feature is called the Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI).

To locate the RSSI:

 1. Fire up the Ring app
 2. Tap the hamburger menu, hit Devices, and select your Ring doorbell.
 3. From the device dashboard, tap the “Device Health” tile and look under the Network section for Signal Strength.

Strong signals show green RSSI values; weaker ones are gray, amber, or red.

RSSI will indicate a strong signal when it’s closer to 0; hence an RSSI of -40 is better than -100.

If you're running into a poor signal, you can:

 • Consider setting up a mesh network
 • Adding separate Wi-Fi extenders or a Ring Chime
 • Clearing any obstructions that might block the Wi-Fi signal
 • Reposition your Wi-Fi Router
 • Remove unnecessary devices from the Wi-Fi network
 • Switch between 2.4GHz and 5GHz (depending on your Ring Video Doorbell model)

Step 11: Verify Notification Settings in The Ring App

Double-check that the notification settings in your Ring app are on. Both the Motion Alerts and Ring Alerts, located in the device dashboard, should be switched to the blue “On” setting.

Also, make sure your Android or iOS smart device has granted permission for the Ring app to display notifications. You can check for this in the notification section of your smart device’s “Settings” app.

Ring.com Push Notifications Via Browser

If you prefer to receive alerts on your PC or Mac, you can also customize alerts to your computer via Ring.com.

However, you need to be logged into the Ring website and be a subscriber of a Ring Protect Plan.

To learn more about setting up notifications to your PC via Ring’s website, check out this article.

Do not disturb

Step 12: Verify “Do Not Disturb” is Disabled On Your Smartphone

Besides that, check that the “Do Not Disturb” setting on your phone is off. This feature is represented by the moon icon.

Switching it on tells your phone that you do not want to receive any alarms or notifications.

If the feature is on, turn it off. You can do so by pulling up the shortcut menu of your phone and tapping on the moon button.

After disabling DnD, retest your camera to see if you can receive motion alerts.

Ring App Notifications

Step 13: Check Application Settings and Restart Your Smartphone

If you're still not receiving notifications, check the app settings on your phone.

To do so, open the phone settings and tap on “Applications” (or “Application Manager”).

Choose the Ring app and make sure that the app is enabled and the option to display notifications is turned on.

If it was on, and you were not receiving alerts, disable it and switch it on again.

Additionally, you can try clearing the application’s cache and restarting your phone.

Step 14: Update the Firmware

It may not seem like much, but updating the firmware on your Ring doorbell can resolve any software glitches and fix any bugs in the system.

Typically, Ring updates the firmware on your devices automatically. However, you can check if it's pending for updates using the steps below:

 1. Open the Ring app and head over to your device’s dashboard
 2. Tap on the Device Health tile
 3. Scroll down to find “Device Details”
 4. Here, check the label called “Firmware”

If there are no pending updates, the label will read “Up to Date.” Otherwise, it will indicate a number and update automatically whenever the Ring doorbell runs into an event (detecting motion, sounding the doorbell ring, or accessing the live view).

During updating, the doorbell indicator lights will start flashing in white.

Step 15: Restart the Doorbell

Restarting or rebooting your Ring Video doorbell can help resolve most software glitches and get the motion detection features back up and running.

There are several ways to reboot the device, you can either:

 • Reboot the device from the Ring app
 • Take out the batteries and reinsert them
 • Disconnect the circuit breaker to your doorbell and reset it.

To reboot your Video doorbell via the app:

 1. Open the Ring app and head over to your doorbell’s dashboard
 2. Tap on the “Device Health” tile
 3. Scroll down to “Reboot” and confirm
 4. Wait a few minutes until the Ring doorbell restarts.

You can tell the device is restarting if the indicator lights on the doorbell are flashing Blue.

Step 16: Factory Reset Your Ring doorbell

Finally, you may need to reset your Ring app and Ring doorbell.

To reset the app, you can delete the app from your smartphone and reinstall it again from your Google Play Store or App Store, depending on your device.

Then, you can perform a hard reset on your Ring doorbell. Depending on the model, there are several ways to carry this out, so check out this article for model-specific instructions

After you perform the reset – where the indicator lights flash in short bursts of blue, followed by a spinning white light – make sure to wait for about one minute for the process to finalize.

Then, log in to the Ring app on your device and set it up.

Get Help from the Pros

After you've exhausted all the above options, and your Ring camera still doesn't do a good job of detecting motion, it's best to call in Ring tech support.

They should be able to figure out what's wrong and determine if the Ring camera is physically defective.

Wrapping Up

A Ring doorbell might not detect motion events due to incorrect settings or improper placement. On top of that, you may have accidentally disabled notifications on your smartphone or enabled DnD (Do-Not-Disturb).

So don’t forget to go through the list of steps I’ve included in this guide. It will help you troubleshoot the issue and get the motion detection feature on your Ring doorbell back up and running.

 6. That should be it, your Chime/Chime Pro is now restored to its default factory settings.

How do I reset the Ring Doorbell Wi-Fi?

All Ring doorbells have Wi-Fi connectivity. This enables them to stay in touch with the Ring app. If your Wi-Fi connection is broken, you won’t be able to stream live video from your Ring doorbells. Moreover, you will not receive any notifications. If you are facing such problems, don’t worry. You can easily reset the Wi-Fi on your Ring doorbell.

If you are wondering why the connection might break and why your Ring doorbell is susceptible to going offline, there are two primary reasons. First: because of power issues. If the battery is low on your Ring doorbell, or the power cable is not working, your Ring doorbell might go offline.

Second:, your Ring doorbell might go offline due to network issues. This might happen if you recently changed the password for your Wi-Fi, or the internet connection is down.

 1. Use a Torx (T15) screwdriver to separate the cover plate of your Ring doorbell from its wall mount plate.
 2. Bring out your phone and log in to your Ring app.
 3. Once logged in, select the Ring doorbell you want to change Wi-Fi for.
 4. Navigate to Device Health.
 5. Tap on Change Wi-Fi option.
 6. Now turn over your ring device, you should be able to see a small, orange button.
 7. Connect your Ring app with the Wi-Fi network on your Ring doorbell.
 8. You will be presented with a list of Wi-Fi networks available.
 9. Pick the one you want your Ring doorbell to connect to.
 10. Type in the password for that Wi-Fi network and hit the Connect button on your Ring app. That should be it.

How do I disconnect the Ring doorbell from my Ring account?

When you download the Ring app, you need to first create an account. You can connect as many Ring doorbells as you wish with that account. However, if you wish to upgrade to a newer model of Ring doorbells, you no longer need to keep the old ones connected to your account. In such a scenario, you should first remove the old Ring doorbell and then dispose of it.

Moreover, if you intend on selling your old Ring doorbell, you must remove it from your Ring account. Otherwise, the new owner will not be able to connect the doorbell with their own account.

Before you disconnect a Ring doorbell from your account, make sure you take care of any important video footage it might have. Simply download any important footage and you should be good to go.

 1. Take out your phone and launch the Ring app.
 2. Select the Ring doorbell you wish to disconnect.
 3. Select Settings, you will find it on the upper-right corner.
 4. Select the Remove Device button to disconnect that doorbell from your Ring account.
 5. You will see a prompt that asks you to confirm the removal. Simply select the Delete button to complete the removal process.

Common Questions about Resetting a Ring Doorbell

I just moved home, how do I migrate my Ring doorbell?

Many people expect that when changing homes, they will have to go through the same setup process for their Ring doorbell. However, that is not the case. When you shift homes, from a Ring perspective, only your Wi-Fi network changes. After you move homes, once the device is physically installed, simply connect your Ring doorbell to the new Wi-Fi network. This should migrate your doorbell without the hassle of repeating the entire setup process.

Why won't my Ring Doorbell connect to Wi-Fi?

You might fail to connect your Ring doorbell to your Wi-Fi network for a variety of reasons, most obvious of which is having the wrong router. All Ring doorbells work with only 2.4Ghz wireless connection, except for Ring Pro.

If you still face issues after changing your router, make sure your internet connection is working properly. If it still doesn’t work, as a last resort, perform a Wi-Fi reset on your Ring doorbell. See above for details.

The Verdict

We hope this article answered all your questions. You now know how to perform a hard reset on all popular Ring doorbell models. Along with that, you also learned how to carry out a Ring Doorbell reset or how to fix the “Can’t connect to Wi-Fi” error. Can the Ring doorbell withstand water? While it's not fully waterproof, it has shown significant resilience when exposed to rain.

As of the time of writing, Ring has not published the exact IP rating of their video doorbells however they do so say they are water resistant. They do not recommend regular or intentional exposure of the device to water, which is pretty common sense!

Is the Ring doorbell Waterproof: Ways to reduce the risk of Ring getting wet and causing damage

For installations where the device would be highly exposed to intense rainfall, it may be necessary for additional protection to prevent water ingressing into the casing.

It is advisable to install the Ring doorbell under a roof or a protected porch in front of the house. Where this is not possible, you can install an alternative cover that will provide a shield to protect the device from water ingress. There are many possible ways to reduce the likelihood of the device getting wet.

 • Installing a waterproof cover protects the Ring doorbell from rain or any other water source.
 • You could cover any spaces where you think water may drip on to the device.
 • Covering the top and the sides will reduce the influence of water on the device.

It is not costly to install these protective and weather-proof devices and may save you money in the long run.

How does the Ring Doorbell handle Extreme Heat, Cold, Rain, or Snow?

The Ring doorbell has been developed to cope with some of the most challenging weather conditions. It can withstand extreme temperatures, snow, and strong winds.

If using a battery, the camera and sensor components incorporated into the Ring doorbell can operate in temperatures ranging from -5 degrees Fahrenheit to 120 degrees Fahrenheit. When wired directly into an electrical circuit, it can withstand temperatures as low as -22 degrees Fahrenheit.

Additional protection, such as a weatherproof cover, can be utilized in cases where the Ring doorbell is installed in areas where it may be susceptible to intense water jets, which may penetrate the outer shell.

Why is it important to be waterproof?

Waterproofing for outdoor electrical devices is important as by virtue of being installed outdoors, they will encounter more extreme weather conditions.

If an outdoor electrical device was damaged, due to weather conditions, there may be the potential for malfunction or in extreme cases electric shock, risking human life.

As the Ring doorbell is water-resistant, it may be prudent to install a waterproof cover to reduce the potential risk. This will reduce the chance of moisture build-up within the device and ensure the clarity of the camera is maintained. It will also prolong the operating life of the doorbell by preventing hardware damage.

Any need for a technician to repair the device will also be averted, thereby saving money.

Ingress Protection (IP)

While the Ring devices are not IP (Ingress Protection) rated, they are highly resistant to water. In reality, the Ring doorbell can only be water damaged by subjecting it to intense water jets or by fully submerging it in water.

It is advisable to clear any snow that accumulates on the Ring doorbell to avoid freeze-thaw expansion that may cause gaps and damage to the casing.

Can a Ring doorbell be installed behind glass to protect it from rain?

The PIR sensors used in Ring doorbells do not work if installed behind a glass protection. The device uses heat to detect motion and the sensors cannot detect the motion with the glass blocking it.

Therefore we do not recommend installing behind a glass panel.

Are Ring doorbells wired or wireless?

Most models of the Ring doorbells are wireless and run on power from a rechargeable battery. The Ring’s Pro and Elite models are the only versions that are wired. All models except the peephole cam can be hardwired into the existing doorbell connections.
