Make sure you turn off the power to your equipment before installation to ensure safety.

Keep in mind that this process can be a significant task if there is no spare wire available, as the wiring between your furnace and thermostat likely runs behind walls or in hard-to-reach locations.

Below are the steps involved for scenarios where there is an unused wire not connected to either the thermostat or the HVAC system.

  1. Turn off the power supply to your HVAC system and verify that it is off.
  2. Remove the face plate of your Nest thermostat and take a picture of the wiring for reference. Label each wire with the corresponding terminal letter.
  3. Check if you have an unused wire that can be used as a C-Wire. If not, you may need to run a new wire from your system to your thermostat. (Or check out the other options below). The C-Wire is typically blue. Connect the wire to the C terminal on the Nest.
  4. Find the other end of the thermostat wiring near your HVAC equipment, and identify the unused wire. Connect it to the C / Com terminal on the control board of your system.
  5. Finally, restore power to the furnace and Nest, reattach the Nest display cover, and test to see if your thermostat is working properly. You can confirm the blue C wire now appears as connected under “Equipment.”

You might be facing issues with the temperature settings or you might just be selling the thermostat or switching things up with your HVAC system.

Whatever the case, I’ll show you how to carry out a reset in the guide below so let’s get into it.

Restart vs Reset: What's the Difference?

Restarting your Nest Thermostat is like rebooting a computer – it resolves minor glitches without affecting your settings.

Resetting, on the other hand, erases specific or all stored information, helping you adjust to significant changes.

Restarting a Nest Thermostat

Typically, you only need to rely on a restart if your thermostat screen is stuck or frozen. If the screen is blank, you might have to troubleshoot any power issues before following through with a restart. 

To restart your Nest Thermostat: 

  1. Press and hold down the thermostat ring for about 10 seconds, or until the screen completely powers off.
  2. Release the ring, then press it once more, initiating the restart process.
  3. Wait for the screen to fully turn on, which signals that the restart process is complete.

Types of Resets for Nest Thermostats

Nest Thermostat offers various reset options: 

  1. Schedule Reset
  2. Wi-Fi Reset 
  3. Away Reset
  4. Factory Reset (All Settings)

Each serves a specific purpose, depending on your needs.

However, before you follow through with each of these reset procedures, make sure to write down any of your old schedules, customer settings, or hardware information (such as the system wire configuration, HVAC equipment, and temperature settings).

1. Schedule Reset

All Nest Thermostats, including the 3rd Gen and Nest E, enable users to set personalized schedules for their home's cooling and heating systems.

Performing a Schedule Reset on your Nest Thermostat deletes all this existing schedule data from the device.

It clears your temperature settings, erasing any learned or manually input set points. Therefore, you may need to reset the existing schedule to create a new one depending on your daily routine.

How to Schedule Reset

To carry out a “schedule” reset: 

  1. Press on the ring surrounding the thermostat screen, allowing you to access the main menu.
  2. Turn the Nest Ring, scrolling to the ‘Settings' option, then press the ring again to select it.
  3. Within the settings menu, scroll to the ‘Reset' option and press the Nest Ring once more.
  4. Scroll down to the ‘Schedule' option and tap the Nest Ring to choose this reset type.
  5. Finally, select either ‘Reset' or ‘Clear' (depending on your thermostat model) by pressing the ring one last time.
  6. Follow the instructions on the thermostat to confirm the changes. Typically, you’ll have to turn the ring half a turn or wait until a timer runs out.
  7. After that, your Nest thermostat schedule will reset, followed by a quick rebooting.

After the thermostat restarts, your schedule will be cleared.

2. Wi-Fi Reset

Resetting the Wi-Fi on a Nest thermostat is crucial when switching to a new router or troubleshooting connection issues.

With a Wi-Fi reset, you'll erase the current network settings and prepare your device to connect to a new Wi-Fi network.

Also, if a power outage or connection failure has left you with a spotty Wi-Fi connection, a simple Wi-Fi reset may help resolve the issue.

  1. Press the Nest ring button to wake up the screen and open the quick-view menu
  2. Then, head over to Settings
  3. Select Reset
  4. Choose “Network”
  5. Press Reset or Clear
  6. Follow the instructions to provide confirmation
  7. Wait for the device to complete the reset and rebooting procedure.

You have now reset your Nest Wi-Fi configuration. To sign in to a new Wi-Fi network, go to Settings → Network.

3. Away Reset

If you would like to remove all settings and temperature configurations related to home vs away or home/away assist modes, then you can carry out an “Away” Reset.

Below are the steps to achieve this:

  1. Wake up the screen and open up the quick-view menu
  2. Move to Settings
  3. Scroll to “Reset” and select this option
  4. Tap on “Away”
  5. Press Reset or Clear
  6. Follow any confirmation prompts

4. Factory Reset

If you are moving out of your old house, or selling the thermostat, I highly recommend you perform a Hard Reset to make sure all your personal information is removed from the device. 

Also, before going through with a factory reset, make sure to note down any custom settings and remove the thermostat from your Nest account.

  1. Open the Nest App.
  2. Tap on the Menu icon at the top left.
  3. Pick the home that is connected to the Nest thermostat you want to remove.
  4. From the App home screen, select the thermostat you want to remove.
  5. From the upper right-hand corner, tap the Settings icon.
  6. Scroll down, and tap on “Remove.”
  7. Confirm your choice by following any prompts that may show up

After this, your device will be removed from your Nest account. You can safely continue with the factory reset process on the thermostat.

  1. Press the thermostat ring button to wake up the screen and open up the quick-view Menu.

How to Install and Integrate the Starling Home Hub with Apple HomeKit

Connecting Nest to Apple HomeKit and Siri is a breeze using the Starling Home Hub. It integrates with your Wi-Fi router to act as a smart home hub and bridge the gap between your Nest and Apple HomeKit devices. 

Starling supports almost all routers (except for Arris RAC2V1A), including HomeKit Secure Routers, such as the Eero. The Starling Hub does not support PoE (Power Over Ethernet). Instead, you will have to power it via the Micro-USB interface provided or with a PoE micro-USB power splitter. 

To get started:

  1. Plug the Starling Home Hub into your Wi-Fi router using the included LAN Cable 
  2. After that, connect the Starling Home Hub to the power using the included USB cable and a phone charger
  3. Check for any indicator lights on the LAN port of the Starling hub, if anything doesn’t light up, reconnect the cables and try again
  4. Then, open up a web browser on your laptop or smartphone and make sure you’re connected to the same network as your Wi-Fi router
  5. After that, head into the Starling network, typically it’s “setup.starling.io.” (Don’t forget to check your quick start guide for the correct address.)
  6. If your iPhone is on a VPN or LTE, the connection will not be complete so make sure to switch these off.
  7. The website will try to scan your local network for the smart home hub. After which, it will open up a menu to help you create a Google or Nest account
  8. Follow the given instructions to provide your credentials and authorize Starling to control the home hub
  9. Finally, you’ll have the option to customize the available Nest devices and configure any settings.

Adding The Nest Thermostat to Apple HomeKit via Matter

Ideally, you want your battery voltage to be higher than 3.7V and input current greater than 20mA.

When it comes to the Nest thermostat battery voltage, 3.7V or higher implies the battery is sufficiently charged and allows the thermostat to function without any restrictions.

Maintaining the battery voltage at this level ensures the device can provide optional features such as remote control through Wi-Fi, software updates, and motion sensing.

However, when the battery voltage falls below 3.6V, the Nest thermostat goes into a power-saving mode to prolong its battery lifespan.

In this low-power mode, these optional features are disabled and it will only help manage your home’s temperature.

So to avoid any inconvenience, it's important you monitor the battery voltage of your Nest thermostat regularly and ensure it stays above 3.6V.

What's the Ideal Voc, Vin & Iin Voltage on a Nest Thermostat?

The Voc, Vin, and Iin indicate the flow of electricity through your thermostat wiring. These are equally important and you need to monitor them so they won't go below a certain level.

  • For Voc, Google recommends you keep it between the range of 29V-42V.
  • For Vin, 29V-42V is ideal when you have a C-wire connected. 
  • If you don’t have a C-wire, Vin should be 29-42V when the HVAC system is not running
  • When the system is running, Vin must read 6-7V (without the C-wire).
  • For Iin, 100mA-200mA is best when a C-wire is connected. 
  • Without a C-wire, 20mA-40mA for Iin is enough. 

Anything lower than that could imply an issue with your battery, wiring, or internal components. 

So be prepared to troubleshoot and if you haven’t done already, consider setting up a C-wire for better power stability.

Troubleshoot Low Battery Issues and Blank Screen on a Nest Thermostat

In most situations where you're troubleshooting the Nest thermostat, whether that's connectivity issues, low battery errors, or a blank screen, measuring the system voltage is a crucial step. 

If the power levels in your thermostat wiring or battery are too low, the thermostat will disable certain functions or stop responding altogether. 

So when troubleshooting these issues, you will most likely have to carry out the following practices:

  1. Check power information via the menu
  2. Check the thermostat wiring strip for low voltage (using a multimeter)
  3. Replace or Recharge the battery on your thermostat
  4. Check your C-wire connection or install a C-wire if you don't have one.

I've already shown you how to carry out the first step of this troubleshooting procedure, so let's talk more about how to carry on with the rest of the steps, especially if you can't access the thermostat menu. 

How to Check Voltage With a Multimeter

If you're having issues with battery voltage, you will need to confirm the correct voltage is through the R wire and out the W, Y, or C wires.

This requires you to remove the thermostat from the wall mount and insert multimeter probes into live wires, so make sure you take the necessary precautions or get help from a professional.

To check the voltage on your thermostat wiring strip:

  1. Carefully pull out your Nest thermostat from its base plate.
  2. Configure your voltmeter to the AC voltage (ṽ) mode, 
  3. If your multimeter doesn’t have the auto range function, choose an AC voltage range that’s higher than 24V. (Usually, the available option is 200V.)
  4. After that, hold the red probe on the red wire or Rh-terminal.
  5. As you maintain the red probe's position, keep using the black probe to measure voltages on the other non-red wires or terminals.
  6. Usually, the voltage should measure 24-28V if a specific wire is energized. So if the fan is on, the “G” wire (typically green) should measure 24-28V. 
  7. Also if you have a C-wire make sure the voltage between Rh/Rc and C falls under this range. If this voltage is lower than 24V (say 8V) it might indicate the system is not getting enough power.

If you are uncertain or encounter issues during the testing process, do not hesitate to reach out to a professional technician.

They will be able to assess and diagnose any inconsistencies in voltage, faulty wiring, and other electrical concerns that could be causing problems with your equipment.

Replace or Recharge Thermostat Batteries

In case your thermostat runs entirely on batteries, you must make sure the battery is fully charged. 

Depending on the model, you will have to replace the batteries or recharge them using a Mini-USB or Micro-USB cable. Make sure to let it charge for a good couple of hours before plugging it back in. 

Supplementing your Thermostat with a C-Wire

If you're already running your nest thermostat on batteries and you're constantly experiencing low voltage errors, it might be best to install a C-wire into your thermostat. 

A C-wire will help supplement your thermostat with a steady source of power and provide more stability to the system. Even Google recommends you install a C-wire on the app.

There are several methods to provide a C-wire into your system. You can either:

  • Hardwire a C wire into your existing thermostat wiring strip
  • Install a C-wire Adapter or Transformer
  • Reuse your G Wire as the C wire

Hardwire a C-Wire

The task of installing a C-Wire is complicated, especially when you have to draw the new thermostat cable from your HVAC system to your thermostat and hide them.

So depending on your circumstances and skill level, this can easily turn into a big DIY project. Instead, I recommend enlisting the help of a professional or checking out the alternatives mentioned below for a quick fix.  

Install a C-Wire Adapter

This would be your next option if you don’t have a C-wire, or laying a cable seems too impractical at the moment.

There are a few devices that can help set up a virtual C-wire in your system. 

Whatever method you choose, you will have to do a bit of electrical DIY, so make sure to prepare your tools and plan out how you're going to lay out the cables for this new wiring system.

Tools Needed

In terms of the tools necessary, you would typically need a

  • Philp’s head/flathead screwdriver: To reconnect the terminals 
  • Cordless drill: To mount the adapter closer to the control board
  • Appropriate fasteners: zip screws to fix the adapter to the metal sheet on your control board
  • Double-sided tape: If you want to just stick the adapter without any drilling
  • Spirit Level: To keep things straight and square
  • Wire Strippers: To cut wires and strip them to make splice connections
  • Wire Nuts/Splice Connectors: When you need to splice the wires between the adapter and thermostat
  • Smartphone or Camera: To take a photo of the existing thermostat wiring configuration
  • (Optional) Label Maker: To label the thermostat wires 
  • (Optional) Non Contact Voltage Tester: To ensure the wires are safe to handle

Reuse your G Wire as a C Wire

If you're looking for a way to power your Nest thermostat without using a C-wire or adapter, repurposing your G-wire can be the only solution. 

Keep in mind that by using the G-wire as a C-wire, you'll lose fan control features such as independent or “fan-only” mode, as the G-wire is normally responsible for these functions.

Additionally, if your HVAC system includes a zoning panel, this method may not work efficiently due to compatibility issues.

So here’s the process:

  1. First, turn off the power to your thermostat and HVAC system. Locate the appropriate breakers and disconnect switches and turn them off.
  2. After that, remove the Nest thermostat from the wall mount. 
  3. Take a picture of the existing wiring configuration. 
  4. Locate the green G-wire in your thermostat's wiring and connect it to the C-terminal at both the thermostat and furnace ends.
  5. Then, head over to the furnace control board where the other end of the thermostat wiring strip connects to the rest of the HVAC system.
  6. After making sure the entire system is switched off, look for the terminals which connect the thermostat wiring strip
  7. Here, disconnect the green-colored G wire and connect it to the C terminal, just like you did on the thermostat side. Don't alter any other wire connections.
  8. Using a small jumper wire, connect the now-empty G terminal to the Y (Cooling) terminal on the control board
  9. Restore power and see if the thermostat detects the C-wire

Your thermostat will now function with a C-wire but since you’ve shorted the G terminal with the Y terminal, the blower fan will only turn on when the cooling system kicks in. 

Conclusion

Monitoring the power information on your Nest thermostat is crucial if you want to ensure the device has enough power to maintain all its functions. 

Usually, you want the battery voltage to hover around 3.7V for optimal operation. Anything lower than that, and you might lose certain functions such as Wi-Fi connectivity and motion sensing.

How it Works

This helps to draw out every last bit of cold air from the compressor and evenly distribute it to every corner of your home, meeting your desired setpoint but with the compressor shut down several minutes in advance. 

Since the compressor requires significantly more wattage than your fan, it can help save a small amount of energy, every time your Air Conditioner turns on and meets your desired setpoint.

The “Learning” Aspect of the Airwave Feature

When you first configure this setting, the thermostat shuts down the compressor 5-10 minutes before it's supposed to shut down.

After a couple of days or weeks, it will learn to gauge your compressor’s performance and decide exactly when to shut down the compressor. 

Usually, this value will be calculated based on the time the compressor is running or a particular temperature that is 2-5 degrees above your desired setpoint. 

For instance, if you’ve set the temperature to 72 degrees, the thermostat might shut down the compressor when the indoor temperature is around 74 degrees, predicting that the residual cold air blowing in will eventually cool your home perfectly to 72°F.

How to Enable or Disable The Airwave Feature

On the Nest Thermostat

  • Supported Models: Nest E and Nest Learning Thermostat

Here’s how to configure the Airwave feature on these models:

  1. On your Nest Thermostat tap the ring to open the Quick View menu.
  2. Now navigate to Settings
  3. After that, tap on Nest Sense and select “Airwave”
  4. There you will have two options: Airwave On and Airwave Off
  5. Tap “Airwave On”
  6. You will see a green check mark appear to confirm changes

Via the Nest App

First, make sure the Nest app is installed on your device and that you have the thermostat connected to the app.

  1. First, open the Nest app
  2. Then tap and hold your device’s tile/thumbnail until a drop-down list will pop up at the top right
  3. From this list, select “Settings”
  4. Tap on “Temperature Preferences”
  5. Then select “Airwave”
  6. Tap on the switch to toggle the Airwave function on and off.

How Does the Airwave Feature Impact Humidity?

Nest thermostat takes humidity into account as well and prioritizes it over the Airwave feature.

So if the humidity level in your home is uncomfortably high, and it’s supposed to shut down the thermostat according to the airwave function, the Nest thermostat will instead hold off on shutting down the compressor until the humidity level improves.

What is that comfortable humidity level you ask? Well, your Nest thermostat calculates this based on your indoor and outdoor temperature. So as soon as the humidity falls below this level, the airwave feature will turn on. 

When Should I Disable the Airwave Function?

Although the Nest thermostat is perfectly capable of automating the Airwave function so it doesn't interfere with the humidity requirements in your home, there are certain instances where you should keep it switched off.

  • If it's extremely humid inside and your home isn't well-insulated
  • If the humidity sensor in your Nest thermostat is malfunctioning
  • When the Nest thermostat is closer to the bathroom, cooking stove, heat-generating electrical appliances, or open containers or water
  • When the AC or humidifier is malfunctioning and pending repairs
  • When you suspect the system is short cycling without improving the temperature

The Airwave feature can interfere with these situations, especially when it's trying to optimize itself based on indoor and outdoor humidity levels. 

In that case, it's best to disable Airwave and let the thermostat run using “Cool-to-Dry” or regular Cool.

Does the Nest Airwave save you money?

On average, the Airwave feature can help you shave almost 10% off your monthly energy bills. 

However, let's try to estimate some numbers by assuming the Nest thermostat switches off the compressor 5 minutes early (average scenario).

  1. In most temperate states such as Texas, Florida, and Hawaii, the Air Conditioner's cycle rate is around 20 minutes (per hour)
  2. With Airwave turned on, we can assume the average cycle rate to be reduced to 15 minutes
  3. An average central air conditioner will use up to 3500 W per hour, so when it runs only 15 minutes it consumes approximately 875W per hour (with 20 minutes it takes up nearly 1,166W)
  4. Right then and there, you can expect to shave off around 25% of your AC's power consumption. 
  5. Compounding this into a month, your AC might consume 26.2kWh with Airwave or 34.9kWh without Airwave, saving you around 8.7 units.

However, this is only a ballpark figure so depending on your climate, house insulation, and the specifications and condition of your AC system, my best bet is that the Airwave feature will improve efficiency by around 10-20%.

Also, depending on how significant the AC is on your power bill, you can expect to save around 5-10% of your power bill under the right conditions.

On average, you can expect your AC to run 20% less and cut off around 5-10% of your monthly energy costs.

Will the Airwave Feature Interrupt the Humidity Levels in My Home?

With uncomfortable levels of humidity, the Airwave feature will automatically disable, allowing the AC to absorb the excess moisture and reduce the humidity. 

However, it's not a good idea to be entirely reliant on this feature, so I recommend switching on the “Cool to Dry” mode instead if your goal is to get rid of excess humidity. 

If your home constantly experiences low humidity, then you might have to address it with a humidifier setup. For this, I recommend getting help from an HVAC expert.

No, these two are separate features with the Cool to Dry setting designed specifically to operate your AC in order to reduce the humidity in your home.

The Nest thermostat prides itself on exceptional self-learning features that are specifically engineered for energy saving and adapting to your routine habits. However, there might be instances where the pre-programmed schedules may not adequately cater to all situations, indicating that from time to time, manual alterations to the settings may be required.

In this guide, I’ll show you how to disable all of these automated functions.

Why Override Your Nest Thermostat Manually?

Smart thermostats like the Nest have made things easier overall. That being said, there will be certain situations where turning your Nest thermostat to manual makes more sense. These include:

  • When you’re on vacation all week long and you don’t want the thermostat to heat up or cool down an empty house. (Assuming Home/Away Assist is disabled)
  • You want to maintain the same temperature indefinitely.
  • You want to set up a different setpoint when you have guests over.
  • You don’t want the thermostat to reprogram itself based on minor changes.

As such, the settings you will want to disable (based on your preferences) are:

  1. The Auto-Scheduling Function
  2. Eco Temperatures
  3. Home/Away Assist

I’ll show you how to disable each of these functions along with how to set up a permanent hold.

1. Auto-Schedule Function

The Auto-Schedule function, exclusive to Nest Thermostat E and Nest Learning Thermostat models, intelligently adapts your home's temperature settings based on your preferences throughout the day.

Once the thermostat gathers enough data, probably after a week or so, it tailors a personalized schedule designed to maximize comfort and efficiency.

However, if you prefer a more hands-on approach, you can disable the Auto-Schedule feature and manually edit or create a new schedule with fixed parameters.

Turn Off Auto Schedule/Disable Learning via the Nest App

To turn off auto-scheduling via the Nest App:

  1. Open the Nest app
  2. Select your Thermostat from the app's home screen
  3. Tap on Settings (the gear cog icon)
  4. Toggle the “Auto-Schedule” switch

Turn it Off Via the Thermostat

On your thermostat:

  1. Wake up the screen by pressing into it
  2. Scroll to settings and open it
  3. Then, keep scrolling to the right until you find the option titled “Nest Sense”
  4. Tap on this option and select “Auto-Schedule.” Usually, it's the first option at the top
  5. Then tap on “No” or scroll to this option
  6. Press into the screen to confirm changes
  7. Scroll down and tap on “Done”
  8. Scroll to the left until you return to the home screen.

Clear Existing Schedule

When switching to manual mode, you want to clear out your preset schedules, so the thermostat doesn’t go back to following the old routine.

So to clear your existing schedule:

  1. On your Nest thermostat, select Settings
  2. Next, choose Reset and then Schedule.
  3. Finally, depending on your Nest thermostat model, select either “Reset” or “Clear”
  4. Then rotate the ring as instructed to confirm your settings
  5. Hit “Done” and your Nest thermostat will reset the schedule and restart itself

Note: For Nest Thermostat E users, you can select “Basic” to replace your current schedule with the default Basic Schedule.

After resetting the schedule, your thermostat will pretty much function as a manual thermostat. However, don’t for complete manual control you need to turn off Eco temperatures and Home/Away Assist.

Manually Schedule

After you disable auto-scheduling, you can still reinstate the routines via the Nest App, voice commands, or the thermostat itself.

In the Nest App:

  1. Open the Nest app
  2. Pick your thermostat
  3. After that, tap on “Schedule” with the calendar icon
  4. Then follow the instructions on the app to customize your temperature setpoints and time periods as desired.

 On the Thermostat:

  1. Wake up the display
  2. Press the ring button to open the quick-view menu
  3. Rotate the settings until you get to “Schedule” which also looks like a calendar icon, press the ring button to enter the schedule settings
  4. Then rotate the ring to find the necessary setpoint. Click on it to open up the option to remove or change it.
  5. With “Change” you can then adjust the time by turning the ring and pressing the ring button
  6. After that, you can change the temperature by rotating the ring. Press the ring button to confirm
  7. Likewise, you can adjust your scheduled setpoints and create new ones by pressing the ring button in an empty time period
  8. To save and exit changes rotate to an empty time period and tap on the ring button
  9. After that, scroll down to “Done” and press the button to exit

2. Eco Temperatures

The Eco temperatures mode is designed to keep your home cool during the winter or warm during the summer so it can reduce energy costs while no one is at home. 

However, if you don’t want to use this mode and want to control the temperature yourself, you can turn it off.

How to Turn Off Eco Temperature

  1. Wake up the thermostat and head over to “settings”
  2. Scroll the available options until you find, “Eco.” Tap into it
  3. Adjust the temperature values for “Heat to” and “Cool to” using the dial until both values are displayed as “Off”
  4. Then, press into the thermostat to cycle the available options until you get to “Done” and press again to confirm changes and exit the sub-menu.
  5. Make any other necessary changes or scroll counterclockwise until you get to the thermostat home screen

3. Home/Away Assist

The Home/Away Assist function is designed to sense when you are at home or away and prompts the HVAC system to turn on or off, respectively. 

This function works by using the activity sensors in the thermostat and tracking your phone’s location using the Nest app – allowing the thermostat to function based on your activity.

This means that all the Nest thermostats in your home can automatically function based on your being at home or away. However, you don’t have to use this feature if you don’t want to.

How to Turn off Home/Away Assist

  1. Gently touch or click the thermostat to wake up the main screen.
  2. Select the Settings option and rotate the ring to find the “Home/Away Assist” function.
  3. Tap or press on the “Stop Using” option and confirm by clicking ‘Done'.

Manually Override to Hold the Temperature

If you want to maintain a specific temperature indefinitely you can manually override (or hold) the temperature to your desired setpoint.

Keep in mind, however, that you have to disable all the automated features mentioned above (Auto-schedule, Eco Temperature, and Home/Away Assist) and then control the temperature as you would a traditional thermostat.

Hold Feature on the Nest Thermostat (2020 Model)

For the latest Nest thermostat (2020 model), you can easily set up a manual hold without having to disable these automated features. However, this isn't the best option for permanent holds, since you can only hold a Non-Eco temperature for a maximum of 24 hours.

That said, you can set up these holds via the Google Home app or the thermostat itself.

Creating or Setting Up a Temperature Hold in Google Home

  1. First, open the Google Home app and tap on your thermostat's tile icon.
  2. You’ll be greeted by the Nest thermostat’s home screen. Here, check the thermostat’s current settings and make sure the system mode is in either Heat, Cool, or Heat • Cool mode.
  3. Then, adjust the desired temperature on the home screen as desired.
  4. After that, tap on the ‘Hold temperature' setting (Clock icon). From the menu that opens up, pick either the “current temperature” or any other preset you want to maintain during your hold.
  5. You might also have the option to set or pick the “end time” for this hold. If you choose the Eco preset, you can hold the temperature indefinitely. Meanwhile, other presets can only hold for a maximum of 24 hours.
  6. To confirm your temperature hold, tap on “start.”

Canceling a Temperature Hold

To create a new temperature hold or make your thermostat return to its existing schedule, you'll first need to terminate the current hold. To do so:

  1. Launch the Home app and locate the tile of your Nest thermostat.
  2. Check that the thermostat is in the mode (Heat, Cool, or Heat • Cool) that matches the ongoing hold.
  3. Click on ‘Hold temperature' then tap ‘End hold.'

After that, you can let the thermostat run according to its automated schedules or create a new hold as desired.

Setting up a Hold via the Thermostat

  1. Wake up the thermostat screen and tap on the ring button to open the quick-view menu.
  2. Scroll to “Hold” and tap on the ring button. You can easily identify this setting as it’s indicated as a clock icon with hands.
  3. When inside this setting, you get to pick between holding the current temperature or adjusting your temperature as desired.
  4. After setting your temperature, tap on “Continue” to set the time
  5. To define the duration, you can scroll to adjust the time in 30-minute increments.
  6. To finalize your hold, scroll down and tap on ‘Confirm.'

As usual, if there's an existing hold, you'll need to cancel it before applying any changes.

Extra Tips for Managing Your Thermostat's Manual Settings

For the most efficient and accurate readings, don’t forget to consider these extra tips as well:

  • Geofencing: Connect your thermostat to your smartphone so it knows when you're home or away. This helps the home/away assist mode from activating unnecessarily.
  • Optimal Placement: Install the thermostat in a frequently used area like a hallway or common room. This ensures constant detection of your presence and a more accurate reading of your home’s temperature.
  • Customize a Schedule: Create a tailored schedule that fits your daily routine instead of relying solely on default or auto-schedule options.
  • Set up Holds When Necessary: Remember to set up permanent or vacation holds when leaving home for an extended period. This helps reduce energy waste and saves on utility costs.

Verdict

The smart functions on the Nest thermostat definitely stand up to its name. However, disabling certain automated features such as auto-scheduling and home/away assist can help you wrestle more control over the device.

  4. After sufficient charging, the display will light up with a prompt to reconnect it to the thermostat base.
  5. Carefully attach the display and press firmly, listening for a click to ensure it's properly seated.

3. Does your HVAC system have power?

Before troubleshooting your Nest thermostat any further, make sure your HVAC system has power.

If the breaker tripped, the R-wire — responsible for powering the thermostat — won’t receive any electricity.

In this situation, reset the breaker and see if the low battery or blinking red light issue is resolved.

If this was the issue, then you may need to consult with a HVAC professional to diagnose why the breaker tripped.

4. Diagnoise a Low Power Issue

Diagnosing a low power issue in your Nest Thermostat begins with charging it using a USB cable if needed.

After reconnecting the display to the thermostat base, navigate to Settings > Technical Info > Power.

Here, you'll find the values for Voc, Vin, and Iin – these indicate the electrical current sent over your system's wires to the thermostat.

It's essential to verify that these values are within the specific ranges noted below, or you may have a wiring or system issue.

  • For thermostats without a C wire, the values should be as follows: Voc: 29 to 42V, Vin: 29 to 42V when your system is not running and 6 to 7V when your system is running, Iin: 20 to 40 mA.
  • If your thermostat has a C wire, the values should be: Voc: 29 to 42V, Vin: 29 to 42V, Iin: 100 or 200 mA.

Battery Voltage

Additionally, ensure the thermostat's internal rechargeable battery voltage is higher than 3.6V for normal charging.

If the battery falls below 3.6V, the thermostat will disable certain functions to preserve its charge, such as Wi-Fi, software updates, and screen activation.

5. Connect a C-Wire

If you don’t have a C-Wire installed, then connecting one should solve your low battery problem and fix the flashing red light.

Below, I outline 5 ways you can connect a C-Wire.

5.1 Hardwire the Common Wire

To hardwire a C-wire, connect it to your HVAC system and Nest thermostat. Make sure to turn off the equipment's power during installation. Keep in mind that if no spare wire is available, the process can be more involved. Below are the steps for when there's an unused wire not connected to either the thermostat or HVAC system:

  1. Turn off your HVAC system's power and verify it's off.
  2. Remove the faceplate of your Nest thermostat and photograph the wiring for reference. Label each wire with the corresponding terminal letter.
  3. Find an unused wire to use as a C-Wire, typically colored blue. Connect the wire to the C terminal on the Nest.
  4. Identify the unused wire near your HVAC equipment and connect it to the C/Com terminal on the control board.
  5. Restore the power, reattach the Nest display cover, and test your thermostat. You should see the blue C-wire connected under “Equipment.”

5.2 Use the Nest Power Connector

The Nest Power Connector provides a stable power source for your Nest thermostat if your HVAC system can't provide consistent power. To install, plug it into the wall and connect the black and white wires to your system's power terminals, and the red wire to the C terminal. The connector will then signal the thermostat to turn the system on or off as needed.

5.4 Install a C-Wire Adapter

A C-Wire adapter is a DIY solution if your Nest thermostat lacks a C-wire and you don't want to install the Nest Power Connector or Common Maker. These adapters are user-friendly and easy to install, providing power to your thermostat.

5.5 Reuse your G Wire as a C Wire

Reusing your G-wire as a C-wire is an inexpensive solution, but you'll lose independent fan control. Before starting, verify that your HVAC system is compatible with this option. Remove the G-wire from the G terminal in the thermostat and connect it to the C terminal. Repeat this process at the furnace. Check compatibility with zone panels and connect a jumper cable between the G terminal and Y terminal if necessary.


6. Troubleshoot the C-Wire (if one is installed)

A common cause of wiring issues with Nest thermostats is an improperly connected C-Wire, which may occur during initial installation or due to other factors later on.

  1. To address this issue, first, ensure that power to your system is turned off at the fuse box or system switch – this is crucial for both your safety and preventing damage to the system.
  2. Next, gently remove the Nest thermostat display and inspect the connectors.
  3. Make sure all connectors with wires are fully pressed down.
  4. In some instances, you may need to re-insert the wires to ensure the connector button remains fully pressed down.
  5. If the button isn't down, the Nest thermostat will not detect the presence of the wire in the connector.
  6. To achieve this, you might have to re-strip and straighten the wire ends for proper insertion into the Nest base's connectors.

7. HVAC System Issue

When your Nest thermostat displays a low battery icon or flashes a red light, it could indicate an issue with your HVAC system.

Various problems, such as a clogged air filter, may cause your system to overheat and shut off automatically.

In turn, this prevents the thermostat from drawing power to charge its battery.

You might also notice a Furnace Heads-Up message on the thermostat screen, in your app messages, or in your monthly Home Report email.

To resolve this issue, reach out to a local HVAC professional who can service your system and verify the thermostat wiring.

8. Factory Reset

A factory reset can help resolve the Nest thermostat's low battery or blinking red light issues.

Before resetting, remember to note down essential information, including system wires, heating type, and Safety Temperature settings.

To initiate a factory reset, access the Quick View menu by pressing the thermostat ring, selecting Settings, and choosing Reset.

There are two options available: restarting your thermostat or resetting specific information.

Restarting your thermostat will not delete any information or settings, similar to rebooting a phone or computer.

On the other hand, resetting specific information entails clearing your temperature schedule, learned Away information, or network settings.

Resetting specific information can be useful if you've moved the thermostat, experienced network issues, or undertaken home renovations.

9. Hire a Nest Pro

If none of the above works, or you aren’t confident in handling wiring you can turn to a local Nest Pro for assistance.

Should your Nest Thermostat have a fully drained battery and remain under warranty, reach out to Google for a replacement, as the battery is a non-serviceable component.

FAQs

Here are some common questions and answers related to the Nest Thermostat battery.

What happens if the battery is showing as low?

When your Nest thermostat displays a “Battery Low” message and a flashing red light, it means the battery is running out of charge, potentially affecting its performance.

As a result, your thermostat could lose the ability to activate your HVAC system for heating or cooling, create odd noises due to rapid on-off cycles, or display delayed heating or cooling messages.

Additionally, the Wi-Fi connection may become unstable or your thermostat's screen might become unresponsive.

To temporarily resolve this issue, immediately charge your Nest thermostat using a USB.

However, you will need to investigate the underlying problem, which could involve the lack of a C-wire or issues with the voltage coming from the Rh or Rc wire on your HVAC unit. See my 10 troubleshooting steps above.

What’s the charge time for the Nest thermostat?

A Nest thermostat typically takes around 30 minutes to fully recharge. That being said, if the battery is entirely depleted, this process may extend up to 2 hours.

During this time, the thermostat will gradually regain its functionality, ensuring efficient temperature control and energy management within your smart home.

What kind of battery does the Nest Thermostat have?

The Nest Thermostat houses two types of batteries, depending on the model.

Newer models like the Nest Thermostat E and later generations of the Nest Learning Thermostat use an internal, non-replaceable rechargeable battery.

This battery charges when the furnace is on and through a common wire.

In contrast, older Nest Thermostat models rely on two replaceable 1.5V AAA alkaline batteries that need replacement as they deplete, ensuring optimal performance and seamless operation.

Is it possible to replace a Nest Thermostat battery

In instances where your long-used Nest thermostat's battery seems to require replacement, it's important to note that the battery is not designed for user servicing as it is integrated within the device.

If experiencing low battery or power issues, first attempt the troubleshooting steps detailed above before exploring battery replacement options.

If your internal battery is undeniably dead and unable to hold a charge, assess your warranty status; if still covered, contact your provider for a replacement.

We have compiled a comprehensive guide to help you understand the complexities associated with the flashing lights on your Nest thermostat, which can essentially enhance its performance and efficiency. Nest provides “Heat Links” in Europe and a Nest thermostat has the ability to display up to six distinct light blinking patterns and sequences.

Most of the time, these are simple indicators notifying a restart or a software update. 

However, they can also be trying to indicate a serious issue, so keep reading as I explain each color and show you how to fix them.

Compatible Models

Don’t worry about compatibility as this guide encompasses all available Nest thermostat models, in North America and Europe. 

This includes …

  • 1st, 2nd, and 3rd generation Nest Learning Thermostats
  • Nest Thermostat E
  • Nest Thermostat (2020 model)
  • (If in Europe) their corresponding Heat Link devices.

So let’s get into it!

Nest Thermostat Blinking Lights: Red

The Red blinking light might be the most alarming. However, after you know why your device starts putting out a flashing red light, you won’t have to worry anymore. 

Along with a flashing red light, the screen on your Nest thermostat can also go completely blank. You might see a house icon blinking green in the middle of the screen.

Whatever the case, when the Red light is blinking, it is often trying to tell you that the battery on your Nest thermostat is running low. 

So to diagnose this issue further, I recommend checking out my dedicated guide on resolving battery issues on a Nest thermostat.

Nest Thermostat Flashing Green 

Nest Thermostats receive software updates regularly from Google. If you see a blinking green light on your Nest Thermostat, it means your thermostat is updating the software, installing an update, restarting, or starting up. 

This should only last for a minute or two and then the flashing light will stop. So the first thing you should do is to wait.

However, if the flashing green light doesn’t go away, or if you encounter a steady green light that doesn’t blink, it means your Nest Thermostat has frozen. 

This can happen while it’s carrying out a software update and this troubleshooting guide will help you fix the issue.

Nest Thermostat Blinking Lights: Orange

The blinking orange light might be the most confusing because it can show up even when the device is operating smoothly. 

Your heating and cooling systems might work as usual but the Nest thermostat or Heat Link might be putting out a flashing orange light. 

There can be several reasons why an orange light shows up depending on the North American and European versions. As such, I recommend reading through this article for a comprehensive troubleshooting guide.

Nest Thermostat Flashing Yellow

If you’re seeing a flashing yellow light and your Nest Thermostat is failing to heat your house and warm water, it might be that the Heat Link has disconnected from your Nest thermostat.

As such, the yellow blinking light issue is specific to the European version of Nest Thermostats as the US models do not come with a Heat Link. 

So to make the yellow blinking light go away, you need to re-establish the connection with your Heat Link.

Nest Thermostat Blinking Lights: White

If you come across the blinking white light in your Nest thermostat, chances are you are also finding it hard to start up your thermostat or control it via the app.

There can be several occasions why this might happen. These include:

  • The Nest thermostat is trying to reconnect with the Wi-Fi router
  • The device is going through a software update
  • The thermostat is restarting

So if the white light won’t go away on its own, you can attempt to troubleshoot the issue. 

  1. Start by checking the thermostat wiring. Make sure the cooling and heating wires are placed correctly into the connectors within the Nest Thermostat.
  2. Make sure the thermostat is not loose and fixed properly onto the baseplate.
  3. Wait until the thermostat restarts for a couple of minutes to see if the light goes away.
  4. If it doesn’t try manually restarting the device
  5. To restart, press and hold the Nest Thermostat Ring until the displays go blank. (About 10 seconds.)
  6. Wait until the device fully restarts and check if the thermostat works as usual and if the error light goes away
  7. If it still doesn’t clear out, check the app or thermostat for any alerts or notifications. Then, check the heating and cooling operation of the thermostat manually or via the app
  8. If everything seems fine but the light won’t go away, try restarting again or getting help from a professional

Nest Thermostat Flashing Blue

The blue blinking light is a common indicator on Nest Learning thermostats and certain Heat Link devices. 

In the case of the Nest Learning Thermostat, the device typically indicates the blue blinking light during startup.

For these models, the light should go away after a minute or two. If it doesn’t, you might need to manually fix it.

No Light On My Nest Thermostat

Is the screen blank on your Nest thermostat? If that’s the case, don’t panic because as long as it hasn’t broken down or shown signs of obvious damage, it can be fixed with just a few steps

When the display goes blank or dies out without any indicator lights, it usually means the battery has drained out completely. So once you recharge the device, and fix any wiring issues, the screen will light up again.

Combination of Nest Thermostat Blinking Lights: Green and Orange

Along with individual blinking lights, you might also encounter a combination of colors, the most common of which are the blinking yellow, and green lights. 

So if you are getting the Yellow and Green blinking light combination, chances are your fan might start to act crazy or your thermostat and Heat Link might be stuck in a reset mode or pairing process.
